How Do You Feel About Flying on 9/11?

If we do a short family trip in Sept. for DD's BD, we'd be coming home on 9/11. Honestly, even knowing chances are small that something bad would happen, I can't do it, but was wondering what other opinions were on the subject.

We did the same thing. In 2002 we went to the Keys for a week and came home on the 10th just for the simple fact we didn't want to be in the air on that date. Silly? Probably to some, but we did what we were comfortable with at the time.

I've done it. It's admittedly a little strange and maybe a little more stressful, but you go on. If you don't, then the scumbags win. It's the same as driving over a stretch of road when you know they had a fatal accident previously in that same area. You wouldn't go out of your way to not drive through that intersection would you? You may be a bit more cautious, but you continue to go as you normally would have.

I know it would be in the back of my mind, but I've always felt that if it's my time to go then so be it... I probably wouldn't change my plans. I really believe that if anything were to happen again, it probably wouldn't happen on a predictable date like September 11.

We are actually leaving fof WDW on 9/11...We kinda feel that it may even be safer to fly on that day.. :) just because of the heightened securtiy awareness of that day signifies.

I flew to Chicago for a business trip last year on 9/11. I was a little nervous but it was really no big deal. The airport was just as busy and normal like any other day. Nobody mentioned it and everyone went about their business like it was any other day which made things feel better for me.

*IF* I was one to worry about those things, I might be slightly cautious if was flying around mega-metro's, such as New York, DC, LA, etc.

But as plutolovr said, when it's my time, it's my time.

If it makes you worry less, you have a better chance of getting hit by a car or being involved in a fatal motor vehicle wreck.

If it's easy enough to schedule around, I prefer not to fly on September 11th.

I don't think the date is any more dangerous than any other, it's merely my own little way of honoring the memories of those lost and the struggles of those left behind.

Woudln't bother me in the least. It was a horrible tragedy that happend on 9/11/01. But that is not going to stop us from living our lives normally.

Most years since 01 DH has been traveling on 9/11. In 2002, I was a bit upset. Not because he was flying that day, but because I attended the memorials for 2 friends that we lost that day without him.

9/11 is not some terroist "it" day. If something, God forbid will happen like that again, it could happen on any day. No one is going to wait around for another September 11 20XX.

I've flown on 9/11 since 2001. It's no big deal for me frankly. And this from someone who watched the smoke from the Pentagon curling up into the sky from her office window.

My dad's birthday is September 11th. I'd fly in a heartbeat. It's a date.

As someone who works in downtown Manhattan and watched on the streets as the first tower collapsed, I would have no problem flying on 9/11. Honestly, I'd rather do anything on that day but sit at home. There is nothing worse to me than watching news replays or memorial services, it just brings me back to that day. 9/11/04 was the best 9/11 for me yet, I was at MK.

And a plus to flying on 9/11, at least out of NY, is that they usually have price breaks on the airfare because so many people don't want to fly on that day.

Not a problem!! When it's my time it's my time.

I agree 100% - when it is my time it is my time - it could be at home, in the car, or on a airplane. Last year I few on business from Manhattan (LGA) to Washington DC (IAD) on 9/11. It is a day when I stop to think about all the lives lost and say a prayer for the families but continue to move forward.

I completely agree with you. I'd rather be flying elsewhere on that day than downtown. I happened to be on vacation last year and was much happier that way.

I flew less than a month after 9/11 and it was a little stressfull since others around me seemed so nervous and jumpy, but now I don't think I would reschedule a trip if it turned out I would be flying on 9/11 or anything...the only reason I MIGHT think twice is because it would really freak my sister out...but then again, alot of things freak her out. :confused3

Worrying about flying on 9/11 is like worrying about visiting Pearl Harbor on Dec 7. It happened once - it won't happen the same way at the same time on the same date again.

Has there been a hijacking in the US since 9/11/01? Over five years, and not a peep; I think despite what they did on 9/11, the hijackers completely ruined airplane hijacking as a means for terrorism, because everyone will now assume that the hijacking is for the purposes of flying the plane into a building, and all the passengers will rise up and beat the hijakers to death before they can even get into the cockpit.

It's safe. Go.

If you are worried about something happening that day GET ON A PLANE and hang out at the airport. It's about the safest possible place you can be.

I was on an aircraft on "THE" 9/11 and have flown every one since then. Being an airline employee I feel it is my way of proving that no matter what, WE WIN!!!
