How do you feel about DRIVE THRUS?

This is inspired by a post about a drive thru convience store, in my town we have a drive thru convience store where you can buy milk, bread and other things and just pull up in your car.

They have those in my DH's hometown. It is the best thing ever! I wonder why there isn't one on every block?

Huh???????? Are you reallly saying that people who use a convenience store are below you and that you could never see yourself speaking to them? You do realize that people of all walks of life use convenience stores. Not everyone is there to buy cigs and beer. :sad2: Heck, I bet there are even some nice and half way decent people who work there. If you were able to get down off of the pedestal you seem to have put yourself on you might realize that. :headache:

Don't flatter yourself, they might just be thinking the same thing about you. :confused3

I don't care at all what they think of me. Or what you think of me, either, for that matter. A convenience store is not the place I am going to stop and chat with anyone who is a stranger. They might be Mother Teresa but I'm not going to interact with them in any way unless I have to. It's not the kind of place I'd be looking around and seeing who it might be fun to get to know.

Maybe your convenience stores are full of delightful, clean, sober fun-loving chatters, but mine are mostly full of teenage boys and older guys, and they do buy cigarettes and beer. And smokeless tobacco and porn magazines. Sorry, I'll have to admit I'd rather stay up on my pedestal than hop off and mingle....

I wish they had cut PE out of my classes when I was a kid. Man, I hated Gym!!! I think Im the only one on the planet who failed Gym - several times -. Oh, and my g/f who was in the class with me. We'd have to run a mile - so we'd run behind a shed and stay there until one of the slow runners ran past us 5 times, and then walk back. :rotfl:

FTR - Illinois is one of the only states with DAILY Gym through HS.

:rotfl: My DD is hoping they would change the laws regarding that but no such luck for her. She is stuck taking daily gym for the next 4 years (except Health & when she does Driver's Ed OR if she makes it on a Varsity sport & can exempt out her Junior/Senior year during that season). It's that running part that kills her. She's a gymnast so if they could do gymnastics all the time, she would be happy but they are forced to run that mile. She hates that with a passion and she's made to do it every single year.

As for drive-throughs, we don't have any that we could get milk, bread, etc.. from but I would use those in a heartbeat. I always use the drive-through bank & have been known to use the drive-up pharmacy when it's yucky outside and I have the young ones in the car. I actually prefer to walk-in for that because there always seems to be a confusion situation at the drive-thru.

We eat fast food occasionally, and in my experience it really does seem like the drive thru people are better trained than the counter people.

They are. It's a "promotion" of sorts, to go from counter to drive through.

The cars are given priority and their orders are timed and metrics are tracked. At least in the store where I worked, there was no such urgency for the dining room.

Another thing, Mrs. Smith. You ask why people keep asking you if you have children, and you fail to see the relevence that has to do with drive thrus. Since you can't figure it out for yourself, let me help you with that.

It's 5:35, and you're just getting in your car after a loooong day at work. You have to:

Run to the bank, cash your check and make a mortgage payment.
Go to the store to get bread and milk
Head over to the pharmacy to pick up your birth control pills.
And still be at the daycare center to pick up your four month old daughter by 6 pm.

You can't go to the pharmacy after you pick up your dd, because they'll be closed before you go all the way across town to the daycare, and then all the way across town again to get to the bank and pharmacy, so you have to do it now, while you're there.

And you only have 25 minutes.

Plus, it's raining, so you really want to run to the store before you pick up dd, because she already has a runny nose, and she's only four months old, and you can't afford to take tomorrow off, since you just got back to work from unpaid maternity leave. Plus, the daycare won't let you bring her if she's sick. If you take that kid out in the cold rain, you'll have a crying, runny-nosed four month old baby with an ear infection screaming at you all night long.

Since you don't know, because you don't have kids, I'll let you in on a little secret.

Children are inconvenient. Anything that makes life easier for parents is only balancing out the art of having kids.

Here's another point about Drive Thru's.....from my personal xperience

Growing up my father was a general mgr. of a restaurant that yes, had a drive thru. Do you know that the DRIVE THROUGH patrons were given PRIORITY over patrons standing in the lobby???!!! So when some of you say that it is quicker to run in to a location vs. using a drive thru, I am not saying it is not true but if you ask someone who works at a place that has a drive thru, you may be surprised to see that those in the drive thru are more likely to be served 1st. I cannot count the # of times I have stopped at a store, seen the 5 car deep "drive thru" line, looked inside and seen 1 or 2 people in line, figured it would be "quicker" to just run inside, only to see those 5 cars AND another 3 finish their business before I even stepped back outside the establishment.

:thumbsup2 I find Drive thrus for fast food & my Bank MUCH FASTER than going in and waiting on the lines!:thumbsup2

Also, Sometimes I am not always publically presentable (dressed like a slob, crocs on even though its snowing) for going into stores..so Drive In's help big time! :thumbsup2

I would *love* a drive through convienence store.

Its called a "convienence" store for a reason. I am far from a lazy person, but to be able to pick up a gallon of milk without getting 2 kids in and out of car seats, and jackets...and then walking half-way across a parking lot making sure no one gets run over and then managing to get through a store without having to buy every product with Dora or SpongeBob between the door and the milk fridge at the BACK of the store...well, yeah sounds like a good idea to me.

(Why the OP felt the need to start another thread about it is beyond me.)

Bc I didnt like your inference that we were lazy for utilizing said establishment
plus then I though of all the other drive thrus people use and thought gee are we all lazy or do people really appreciate the entity called the DRIVE THRU. Sue me for being curious.

I also think we are hurting ourselves by relying so much on our cars. Nobody walks anywhere any more! (And this is coming from someone who KNOWS winter.) Obesity rates are continuing to climb and we're teaching our children bad habits. I really didn't think this was news. This is common knowledge where I come from.
.

I run 5 miles a day and utilize drive throughs whenever possible, do you run 5 miles a day?

ah yes maybe this falls into the lazy category but the fact that I am semishielded from the public bc I have not put on makeup and therefore only need to frighten one clerk vc many clerks and other patrons is definitely a SELLING point for drive thrus!:thumbsup2

The exercise one gets from parking the car and walking in and out of the store is so minimal that it doesn't deserve a second thought.

The best thing we can do to reduce laziness is build walkable societies. Plant our convenience stores closer to the neighborhoods and put sidewalks in place. How about bike paths? I would quickly visit the convenience store on foot or by bike if it didn't mean navigating major highways without the protection of my car.

At this point, drive through or no drive through doesn't make a difference.

I don't but I'm still going to use the drive thru except at Starbucks because that just takes fooooooooorrrrrreeeeeeeevvvvvveeeerrrrr. :cool1:

I heard that same thing years ago.

We don't have drive thru places for milk/bread but Walgreens has them but for medicine so I have never used it.

I do prefer to go in if at all possible for the fast food runs but when I have all 3 kids with me it is not easy to run in & out as quick since I have to buckle 2 of the 3 kids in & make sure they don't run in the road/parking lot all while making sure the food doesn't drop.

I did go into McD's a few weeks ago after work to get dinner & I was all alone. Lets just say it will be drive thru from now on because I had a hard time juggling 3 happy meals, 1 mom & dad bag & 5 drinks with my 2 hands while looking for my keys to unlock & open the door (I did have to put the food on the car & luckily I had dh's car as mine it would of not worked as well).

Seriously?! These things actually exist?

In the UK we only have drive thrus for fast food places, i've never even heard of drive thrus for anything else. Seems very lazy to me. Its almost always quicker to pop inside rather than use the drive thru anyway. I can understand the need for this if you have a sick child but lets face it, the majority of people who use drive thrus are doing so because they can't be bothered to park up and *gasp* go inside. Plus children being sick isn't a new phenomenon, parents have managed to take care of their sick children adequately for years before drive thrus came along.

This is the company that does it in my area, so you can all see for yourself what they do. Very clean, very friendly staff, and awesome tasting milk. Also my friends who love ice tea say their tea cooler is the best. I dont drink tea.

Again, I run 5 miles a day in addition to teaching an interval strength training class most days as well. I utilize a drive-through whenever possible.

I epitomize laziness. Truly.

I'm going to go be lazy right now actually and get *gasp* full service gas AND get a cup of coffee at the drive through on my way to take my lazy kids to run around at the mall.

I'm pratically a sloth.

I just used a drive-thru....its raining and i'm not getting out of my car if I dont have to.

I must ask...did you read the whole thread? Many of the PPs have said how much easier it is for them to use a drive thru. It's not about them being lazy, it's about the convenience and not having to taken 10 min to get the kids out of the car and put jackets and such on. And then you have to take them in where they see and want all of the toys and candy out on display. And then you have to get them back in the car.

And for others like me it's a time saver when you are pressed for time. It has nothing to do with being lazy.

FWIW I exercise when I can, I eat as healthy as I can and I use drive thrus and while I am overweight...I am losing weight.

So as long as there are drive thrus to help me save time...I will use them.
