How do you feel about DRIVE THRUS?

Where I come from, there's currently a debate on getting rid of drive-thrus mostly because of the recent studies that show that idling in line at a drive-thru is quite often worse for the environment than turning off your car and going inside the store.
You would love it here then. Our little "city" (a suburb of St. Louis) doesn't allow drive-thrus. Oh wait, except banks. And Starbucks. And Walgreens. The joke is so that the old cranky people who made this stupid law can get their money, coffee and viagra,:lmao: but all the families have to suffer.

So if your children are sick, stay home and cook them a meal.
I'm curious, do you have kids? Becasuse this statement makes me :rotfl2:

And believe me, if I lived in a community that was walkable, I would do it. But I don't need the government mandating that for me. I can still make my own choices about where to drive and where to walk. Oh and where to eat, and conveniently at that.

I think that the majority of people use drive-thrus not because they have mobility issues or because their kids are sick. I think they use them because they are convienent, the driver is often being lazy, and it's a habit.

Our society utilizes many many conveniences because our free time is taken up more and more by work. It's a vicious cycle really - we work to pay for conveniences, and need more conveniences because we work so much.

However, I don't think drive thrus are a sign of the apocalypse.

I also think we are hurting ourselves by relying so much on our cars. Nobody walks anywhere any more! (And this is coming from someone who KNOWS winter.) Obesity rates are continuing to climb and we're teaching our children bad habits. I really didn't think this was news. This is common knowledge where I come from.

I think you can choose to use a drive-thru if you want but if my life was so busy that I couldn't park my car and walk two feet and spend five minutes interacting with someone as I bought a carton of milk then something would have to change.

And I'm sorry but things like booze sold at drive-thru liquor stores, greasy hamburgers sold at the drive-thrus of fast-food restaurants, and coffee sold at the windows of coffee shops are not necessities of life. So if your children are sick, stay home and cook them a meal.

You still haven't answered the question on either thread..do you have any children?

But see I am the bad mom who hasnt been able to get out all week to the store bc I have a sick kid, so I need to go get milk so I can continue to be the bad mom so I can feed my kids high sugar content, dye loaded cereal for three meals a day;)

I forgot about paying at the pump, love that too. I actually had a friend who had no kids call and apoligize to me when she made fun of me for paying at the pump. She adopted her son and realized the pain it was to go pay cash inside when they are asleep and you are on E!

Add me to the ranks of bad lazy mother. I love drive-thrus and will use more often then not if it's available. I think the majority of people who use drive-thrus do so because they are convenient not because they are lazy. Convenience and laziness do not go hand in hand. Not sure how you came up with that one. :confused3 I interact with people all day long and I dont' think I'm going to suffer or become lazy because I didn't interact with someone while buying milk. Really, how much interaction do you have with the convenience store clerk while you are buying your milk? Hi, here's the money, have a good day? I can say the same things in the drive-thru!! :lmao:

By the time I find a parking spot, park the car, walk in, stand in line, pay, go back outside.........I could have been through the drive thru already!!!! And that is without my 2 year old in tow. If it's raining, or really cold or windy or snowing or supper hot, staying in the car just became even more attactive. You can judge people all you want and call all us driver-thru users lazy, but that doesn't change the facts.

Yes obesity rates are climbing, but I really don't think you can lay blame at drive-thrus. How about the food that they are eating? The sugar and junk? Or maybe the computer they sit at for hours on end or the video games they play endlessly? That would be a heck of a bigger reason then any drive-thru. :sad2:

Or the PE classes that are cut out of school budgets

You mean that I wouldn't gain weight if I quit using drive-thrus? Why didn't someone tell me sooner?

Drive thrus are awesome when I have the baby in the car. It is so much easier than getting him out of the carseat and going into a store.:thumbsup2

I actually AVOID drive-thru anythings. I think it's almost always quicker to run in.

I wish they had cut PE out of my classes when I was a kid. Man, I hated Gym!!! I think Im the only one on the planet who failed Gym - several times -. Oh, and my g/f who was in the class with me. We'd have to run a mile - so we'd run behind a shed and stay there until one of the slow runners ran past us 5 times, and then walk back. :rotfl:

FTR - Illinois is one of the only states with DAILY Gym through HS.

I guess I am lazy because I do not want to haul 4 kids 5 and under into the grocery store just to get milk. I wish everything was a drive thru!!!!:cool1: Seriously- I don't like wasting time running around stores when I can get home or go somewhere fun with the kids. I would rather spend my day playing with them than shopping. We have a Dairy Barn here, a drive thru pharmacy, bank, a drive through starbucks, of course the fast food places etc. I wish there was a drive through deli so I could get cold cuts too! Of course now that we have changed our diet and eliminated dairy there isn't much I can get in a drive through but if I could I would. I also don't pump my own gas. Not because I can't or won't but if the kids are in the car I am not going to go inside to pay. Thankfully we have stations that pump for you. I don't think it teaches kids to be lazy, it just prioritizes my time. JMHO.

"I don't think I am teaching my kids to be lazy by using a drive thru. I think some people look for hidden meanings and messages where there simply aren't any. I'm glad I don't feel the need to pick apart every tiny thing I do and look for the greater impact on society. I live a good life, try not to hurt anybody, and teach my children to be decent and respectful people. If the worst habit I pass on to my kids is using a drive thru, I'll be a happy woman."[/QUOTE]

What she said! ::yes::

I think that is the point. It is quicker to run in, if you don't have to unbuckle 2 todders and an infant. Make sure the toddlers are holding your hand while carrying the infant.

Then, once you get what you need, buckle 2 toddlers and an infant back into their seats.

There are several drive thru liqour stores around here. Oh wait I mean "beverage" drive thrus;)

Wow...on a soapbox much?

I am not sure if you understand the issue here. I don't think it's teaching children laziness to keep them safely in the car while mom goes through a drive thru to get milk. As one poster put it sometimes it is too much work to get the kids out of the car, take them in the store for a couple items.

So what would you do in this situation? It's snowing and icy outside and you need to pick up some milk and bread at the store. You have two options. To park and get your kids out of their carseats, carrying one because they are sick and holding the others hand while trying to walk across an icy parking lot into the store. Then you get to walk back out with a grocery bag all while carrying one child and making sure you and the other don't slip on the icy ground. Or instead the store has a drive up window where you can pick up your milk without having to do all that. What would you do? Because it is this kind of situation the OP and other posters are talking about among other situations.

And I disagree that drive thrus make people overweight. Using a drive thru to bank or get milk DOES NOT make anyone overweight. It's what they eat and how much exercise they get that makes them overweight. And I do not consider walking into the bank and standing in line exercise

I do apologize if I'm being soap-boxish. This is an issue that I feel really passionate about.

I want to say that I don't buy the argument that most of the people who use drive-thrus have very young children and are doing it for the safety of those children. If you sit and watch the cars that go through the drive-thru of a local coffee chain, you will quickly find that the majority of them consist of one to two adults only in the car. I am willing to put money on the fact that most of these people (not all) could easily park their cars and go into the store but for the fact that they are being lazy that day. Using the drive-thru occassionally is not the issue here for me; it's the habitual use the worries me.

I'm not saying that the government should ban drive-thrus or any such thing. I'm just saying that we should make our choices more wisely and that we would help ourselves (not just physically) and the environment if we were to make the decision not to use drive-thrus habitually.

I see the North American society becoming one of convience and it seems to be hurting us. It's frightening to me that many people's diets and the food they feed their children consist of microwaved dinners, fast food, sugar, and perservatives. I don't think that drive-thrus are the apocalypse but a symptom of a larger problem. When it gets to the point where people are so dependent on them that they can't imagine having to park their car and go inside to buy milk, that's a sign of a problem of relying too heavily on convience.

You still haven't answered the question on either thread..do you have any children?

And no I don't have kids but I fail to see what that has to do with anything. I'm not talking specifically about parents here. I'm talking about all kinds of people. So, why do you keep asking me if I have children? If I don't have children, I can't possibly understand drive-thrus?

I think because if you had kids, you would see the need for and accept drive thrus.

I would be very surprised to hear that the PP who does not approve of drive-thrus has children!
