How do you determine when to purchase new or renew your AP.?

I currently have an AP which expires on November 7. Our next trip is planned for February 1 09 and most likely that will be the only visit in 09.

Typically when should I start looking for an AP price increase?

You could buy your NEW pass online with the DVC discount. You would get a voucher that you could turn in for an AP when your trip starts in Feb - figure out where the break even point is for the AP and if you are going into the parks more days than that you are $$ ahead. That way you won't be affected by price increases. Also you could plan more trips.
