Ive decided (because someone posted a link to organizeyourhome.com that this weekend Im beginning - first with the living room. Just moved some furniture this past weekend so I may as well finish the job, right? Have a few drawers that could use some cleaning out, ceiling fan to be cleaned, closet to be gone through, etc, etc.

So besides your regular vacuuming, how do you get to the nitty gritty?

When I really clean, I move everything. It drives my family nuts, but it's the only way I feel the room is truly getting clean. Some of the junk I find underneath my couch is scary. I generally do a good cleaning in early spring and just after school starts in the fall. I call in a professional to clean the carpets once a year. I've found the Swiffer to be an amazing ceiling fan cleaner. I used to hate that alot, but it's much easier now. It just grabs up all that dust.

What I need to get better at is throwing away stuff. I have way too many knick knack type things. They're really just dust collectors.

I use Flylady.net so I don't end up having a whole day of cleaning I break it up into 15 to 30 min. incriments...and love it!...

Anyway...my living room isn't too big so dust/vacuum around base boards, mop floor, vacuum out sofa and spot clean if necessary...clean fan, purge magazines, dust and go through 1 drawer/ cupboard at a time...

If I'm getting to the nitty gritty, a good, thorough vacuuming is a must!

After that DH and I are too tired to do much else....I wish Hoovers ran themselves!

Twice a year I do the following for the entire house:

  • wash the walls, woodwork
    shampoo the rugs and upohlstery
    wash curtains/blinds
clean the windows inside and out (including screens)
    clean out closets and cabinets

For my living room, every week I vacuum the floors, furniture (remove pads and vacuum under them as well as the pad itself), lamp shades and curtains/blinds; dust all surfaces including baseboards, sills and window frames, doors and doorways; and wash the hard wood floors.

Once a month I clean the windows (inside only) and move all the furniture for a super vacuum session. Mail, magazines, and stuff like that get reviewed immediately and organized as it comes in (toss, keep and pay, keep and read).

If you clean regularly and thoroughly it takes less time in the long run than if you save it up for once a month or every other week. I can clean our house top to bottom including changing beds and emptying trash (2 floors -- 3 if you count the basement which I sweep and neaten up once a month -- with two bathrooms) in less than 2 hours.

I've found the Swiffer to be an amazing ceiling fan cleaner.
I second that!

were you always like this or did something happen?

I was brought up to be neat and tidy. Cleaning was not an option and everyone took part. Then I married someone with a multitude of allergies including mold and dust allergies so the routine was stepped up a bit.

Got rid of him but kept the cleaning routine since it was just a habit. DD, who is 6, cleans a mean toilet, can change her own sheets, wields a mean vacuum and cleans a window with no streaks. I think it's genetic.

The question should be ...
