How do you decorate your DVC home for the holidays?

Thanks Diane. We will be at the VWL and BCV on this trip. Does anyone know if either of these resorts have outlets on the balcony?

Are you sure about this? We live in an apartment in a county with extremely restrictive fire codes (you cannot have a grill within a certain distance of the building, and all of the buildings are solid masonry, and they DO enforce this, I've seen them out there with the tape measure when someone was grilling), you're not allowed to put any flammable stuff on your balcony (when we moved in we had too many boxes and nowhere to put them and stuck them on the balcony over the weekend and got slammed monday morning for the "fire hazard") but we are allowed to have real christmas trees. Every year the complex sends around a notice with "christmas tree safety tips" which basically boils down to making sure your tree trunk is trimmed shortly before you put it in water (most tree lots will do this for you), making sure your tree has adequate water (topping off a normal reservoir once a day should do it) and unplugging your lights when you are not home.

Thanks Claudia. We must have been typing at the same time. Now I only need to find out about an outlet at the VWL. Anyone know if there is one on the balcony there?

This is our first rip to see the lights before Christmas. typically we have been for New Years. I would have my tree up the 2nd week of December at home so, I will take a little one with me. I looked EVERYWHERE for the table top toy story tree they had last year. To no avail. The Princess one is available, But there was no way 3 small boys would go for that. ( well maybe one of them would he secretly loves them) At Walmart yesterday. I purchased a 3 foot prelit tree. For about 16 dollars. It has long skinny icle type lights. And a pack of mini glitter bulbs for $3. I will ship in down before hand. And leave it for the next guest. If anyone is coming in on the 14th, and are interested in keeping the tree for thier trip. Let me know and I will be happy to pass it along to you!

I am coming in on the 14th! Which resort are you staying at? Leave it at the front desk with my name on it and I will pick it up! Or we can make plans to meet somewhere for the "exchange". Thanks.

I am checking out on the 19th. Who wants it next?

We asked for guidance from the front desk and housekeeping at OKW before deciding to have a real tree with electric lights and were informed that it was allowed. Housekeeping was very cordial in respect to coordinating disposal of the tree. For that matter last year we checked out a few days before Christmas and one of the bellmen decided to take the tree home rather than tossing it into the dumpster. It worked out well for both of us.

We're planning to have a real tree again this year. I'll seek guidance and will report here if the policy has changed to NOT allow real trees. If anyone has specific knowledge that this practice is not allowed please post it here.

How did you hang something on the door?
I should be more careful when write. When I said...that we hang "at" our front door. I intended it to mean "near" the front door not "on" the front door. I couldn't see an easy way to hang anything on the door so I hung our decoration on the wall mounted entry light located near the front door. The light will easily support a small decoration.

We are doing Boardwalk villas followed by AKL, we are taking it to AKL. But I have no problem leaving it for you! where are you staying? Pm me with your full name, check in date and resort info>:wave2: Ps Donald just notice you are from Newburyport. I have an Aunt, cousin and a very good friend all in Newburyport. Don't you just love the homecoming celebration in the fall!!!!

We stayed at VWL last year. There is not an outlet on the balcony. We used a small cord from inside tru the sliding doors. the doors closed just fine with the small cord.

sanddune: Thanks for the info on the VWL. I will make sure and bring a small lead.

Since we're only there for a coupel days I just wnat to bring soemthing for the door. Does anyoen know if there is a light beside the door at VWL to hang a small wreath or something off of?
Thansk!

After experience hanging lights for Halloween last year I can report with pretty good confidence that BWV doesn't have an outside outlet.....we stretched a cord from inside and shut the door without a problem...

Real Christmas trees at OKW are NOT allowed.

On page 1 of this thread I posted that we decorate a real tree while at OKW during our Christmas vacation. I thought you should know that I recently called OKW to check on the current policy and was told by Joya, the OKW Guest Service Manager, that real trees are not allowed at OKW due to safety concerns. She did not comment on the other DVC resorts and I did not ask.

She conceded that guests have in the past been allowed to have real trees but that was due to inconsistent information being provided to guests.

I'm very dissapointed about this but...safety first.

I see people decorate for Christmas but do they start early? We will be heading down on 11/22 and be at BW until 11/29. My hsband may lock me up if I string lights but then again he will be so relaxed he may not notice!
