How do you clean a braided rug??

I have an antique (about 50-60 years old) room size braided rug. My dog seems to have a bug and it's coming out of BOTH ends. Unfortunately, on the rug. I was upstairs resting and didn't know this for a couple hours so it was dried and soaked in before I found it. A wet rag isn't doing much. What do I do?? I don't think it's pure wool but I'm not sure.

Most carpet cleaners will clean rugs, too. They usually even come out to your house to do it. It's usually around $100.
