How do you celebrate adult birthdays in your family?

DH's Bday was last week, and mine is in 2 weeks, and we were kind of at a loss as to what to do to celebrate, if anything at all! I think it would be fun to throw a party for a landmark Bday sometime, but what do you do each year to celebrate?

In our family, the Bday person usually just gets to pick the restaurant, and we exchange gifts. This year, DH and I didn't even exchange gifts since we had bought so much stuff for ourselves anyways. For his, we just went out to dinner by ourselves...

Do your families make a big deal out of adult bdays? Or do you just celebrate with your immediate family?

We usually just do an evening out- dinner and a movie of the birthday person's choice.
Then the closest Sunday to the birthday, we have cake at my parents'. My birthday is 12/29 so usually we have a cake after new years

I need to call my parents...someone, somewhere along the line has been grossely misinformed!!!

If its a BIG birthday, we do something big (like the extravaganza I had at Universal for my 40th). Otherwise we have a quiet celebration amongst ourselves--either dinner out or a "favorite" meal.

Hey, that's my birthday too! I'll be 30 this year!!!! I already told my DH that I didn't want any presents, because we are leaving for WDW a few weeks later. I told my family to get me Disney Dollars!

We have very close families, so for all of our birthdays (me, DH, DS, and DD) we have the family over for dinner and cake. Sometimes we BBQ (for the summer b'days), and other times its just pizza or sloppy joes. We usually end up with about 20 people for each get together. Its nice because it is the few times a year that the entire family gets together. We do it for our siblings and parents as well.

For my kids however, they have their family party, and then a separate "friends" birthday party. This year my DD had her first sleepover (she turned 7!)

Well, we always go out to eat for my parents and aunts and uncle's bday, but for Grandmother and Grandfathers's (Mammaw and Pappaw to those of you who talk like me) 80th Bday, we rented out the activities building at the church and had a huge party. Last year we fed 68 people! For the babies, we usually just go to their party, and for the school age children, we don't crash their party, just drop by the day of or nearby with a gift.

Somehow the cousins my age get shafted. We just get a gift or card in the mail. We don't get the dinner or party from the family. We did when we were little, and I assume that we'll have to start getting together for the dinners when we're older.

Thank God for my friends. My BF b-day is the week before mine, and we use that interim week and the weekends before and after as an excuse to party and go out.

My extended family is pretty large and we tend to get together for birthdays....we go for dinner somewhere as a group usually (15 + people at times). Some big birthdays like 30, 40, 50 etc get big shindigs...

I have 5 uncles and 13 cousins..,..up until you turn 18, we have big family parties in which everyone comes and eats...
after that, say for my bday...ill pick a place (usually olive garden!) and bring a couple of friends...my brother and his friend, mom and dad and uncle all go out to dinner...they have the waiters (waitresses if its my brother) all come out and sing

planning WDW for dhs 40th bday in 2 years time.....otherwise its just like you said restaurant /movie... although this year for my 35th dh really pushed the boat out...I had a bday week were something special happened every single day.... I know i will never forget it & it was`nt even a special bday (perhaps it was that he was on holiday that week...I don`t know but it was the most special week in a long time)

Funny, I was just thinking about this today. I'm supposed to go to my BF's cousin's 22nd b-day party today and their whole family will be there. They have a party like that for every family member and it's been costing me a fortune in gifts!
I stopped having family parties when I was seven. Now I'll just go out for dinner with my BF and visit my parents after.

I felt the same way. I was in Jamaica for my actual 30th bday and I refused to celebrate. My dh had a dinner (not party) iwith about 12 people the week before. They were also not allowed to yell surprise or call it a party. Now I feel like I was a little ridiculous.
As for adult bdays, my dh's family fells the need to celebrate evryones bday on the Actual day. half the time we cant make it because it is mid week and they live an hour away. In my family all adult birthdays happen to fall within 3 months july, sept and jan. We pick one sunday during that month and celebrate all the birthdays of the month with a dinner.
Next year will be my 35th and a few of my girlfriends are talking about a long weekend in WDW to celebrate

My immediate family (dad, 3 sisters, 2 brothers, 2 brothers-in-law, 2 sisters-in-law, 7 nephews, 5 nieces) are in 2 states: NY and VA. So the NYers (me, dad, sis, bil, 2 nieces) will celebrate at a chain place (TGIF, etc.) and back to one of the houses for coffee/cake. In fact, my sister's birthday is coming up soon. Gotta make plans. When I turned 40, the VA folks surprised me at a Mets game. They traveled and stayed at my sister's house. I thought I was going to the game with my dad. When we got to our seats, my whole family was there! They even had a birthday message put up on the scoreboard. My dad took a picture, had it enlarged and gave it to me as a present. Very nice, hangs on my wall at work.
