I had baked ham at my sisters and low and behold my BIL made it. It was wonderful. I asked him how he made it and he gave me the vague, buy meat, put in foil, pour cola in bottom, cover and bake answer. AUGH.

Can anyone tell me a little more clearly how they get a juicy, flavorful ham? I usually end up buying Honeybaked hams cause mine are never very good.

Oh yeah, inspired by the roast beef thread.

Seriously thats what I do. I sometimes put some brown sugar on top but usually just put it in a foiled pan, pour a Coke over the top (maybe rub a bit of brown sugar on top) and cook until its done based on the weight.

ok personally i dont like the cola versions, i buy a good ham, place it in a fairly deep baking dish, coat it in honey and pineapple, cover hte dish with foil then bake at about 250 degrees for about 1/2 hour per pound. aboiut every hour or so open it up, baste the drippings back onto the ham, and when done, let the meat rest for about 15 min per lb before slicing.

for the soda versions, instead of honey and pineapple, slowly pour a can of cola, ( coke is my favorite, but pepsi will work, or generics, i like the flavor of the coke best) over the ham, wrap, bake as above and baste every so often with the drippings.

First, I get a salt-cured ham, never sugar-cured, because despite the name thing, they are saltier!

It IS pretty much though glaze, cover and bake...........that's pretty much all there is to it.

I have done:

1--orange juice and brown sugar
2--pineapple juice and pineapple chunks
3--kumquats and cajun spice
4--coca-cola

I like them all, they are all just different. I soak it in one, cover with foil and "tent" the foil..........bake it as it says to on the package, and uncover and resoak every so often, then cover it with the rest of the glaze when done.

I just love ham!

I'm not much help.

Your BIL is vague, but right. Only I use 7 up.

Put ham on double layer of foil, pour 7 up over meat, close foil tightly. Put in crockpot high3 hrs. Time can vary. Hard to go wrong with this method.

herc.

What I do is score the ham and then put whole cloves in the scores. Then I put a layer of brown sugar on top and then pour ginger-ale over it all. That's how I learned to bake it from my Grandmother and we've always had a nice juicy ham.

Here's a recipe for the cola: http://thanksgiving.allrecipes.com/az/BakedHam.asp

I score the fat and place pineapple rings and marachino cherries w/toothpicks all over .... sometime use brown sugar.

Actually, with the honey hams you can really just bake it according to package directions. I've never had a problem with flavor or being dry.

For a really juicy ham with no basting, I use a can of flat beer and cover with foil. Very yummy!

My mom does the whole brown sugar, soda, pineapple thing. Always tasted very good! :thumbsup2
