How do they seat parties of 3?

Just curious-- what types of tables do parties of three get? Are they a table made for four-- and they sit us there?? Just wondering--- I had made some PS for two-- then had to add another person and they wouldn't just "add on a person" I had to start all over again--- and I assume it is because of the size of the table---

As a family of 3, they usually sit us at a table for 4. A table for 2 with 3 people trying to squeeze in just doesn't work.
