How do I match paints from different companies/brands?

I have been trying to figure out what colors to paint the interior of our house (it is a smaller ranch). I just got a new magazine and I like the color:

Abingdon Putty HC99 Benjamin Moore

I want to find a comparable color by Valspar. I don't have a paint chip, just a "blob" in a magazine. We are in a small town with no B. Moore dealer.

I found a site online but there is a fee to use it. Any other ideas??

Thanks,
Karen

Valspar should have the color info in their computer. I know Sherwin Williams has Benjamin Moore colors. I think Behr does too.

I really dislike valspar paint so I've never tried to use them to match a color but I'd imagine that if the other companies have the color info they would too.

Tell me why you dislike Valspar? We always used American Traditions from Lowe's but they don't carry it any more. We do have a Lowe's nearby. That was my main reason why I chose Valspar. I think they have Olympia/c too. But that is about the only 2 choices.

I think it is thin and smells bad.

The last (and only) time we use it we had to sleep in the guest room for 2 weeks until the paint smell cleared.

It is really thin IMO and splatters a lot.

I don't know if they have a low VOC line but that would help with the smell.

Do you have a Home Depot? They carry Behr, which I greatly prefer.

Benjamin Moore's Aura line is my favorite but it is really pricey.

My last paint contractors insisted on using Porter and the smell wasn't horrid.

The last Sherwin Williams we used had smell that lingered a long time but it wasn't their low VOC line. From now on I know to use that.

We've discussed paint here before and there are people who love Valspar. I'm just not one of them.

Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately the nearest Home Depot is an hour away. Doesn't Wal-Mart carry Behr?

Wal-Mart carries Dutch Boy, which is not bad at all. I like it better that Behr or Valspar.

Dutch Boy is good. Actually, Walmart's house brand isn't bad. Low odor and has held up nicely. We're two adults, though, so no kid wear and tear. The paint is 7 years old and going strong!

I'm fairly certain that Wal-Mart has other brands color formulas in their computers.

The guy who remodeled my dad's house really likes the paint from Wal Mart (not sure if it is Dutch Boy or the Wal Mart line) and had the Benjamin Moore color I picked made there.

Just take the paint name in. they can look it up in their computer. American Tradition is Valspar, they just changed the name. Valspar is now a low voc paint. I work in the Paint dept at Lowes. I have never had anyone complain about Valspar paint. If you want a good, 1 coat coverage paint, get it in valspar signature paint.

Thanks for the info! I am getting so confused with colors. I have been buying the samples at Lowes and I don't know if it helps or not. Just can't find that right color with Valspar and our house is looking like a patchwork quilt. I know there are 1000s, but just getting more confused. It may be because we are not painting until Memorial Day weekend-the entire house. Plus, living in a smaller ranch, you can pretty much see all the colors in all the rooms, which makes me want the colors to blend together. I think I may have posted this same thing in a previous thread when frustration set in.

Anyway, I have seen a few colors I like in Coastal Living and BH&G, but they are usually Benjamin Moore colors. Maybe I will take in the BM # and have Lowe's make me a sample from that?

Thanks again,
Karen

If you have a sample of the color you can take it to any paint store. They will scan the color into the computer and blend it. That's what we did. We had our house built 25 years ago. When we painted the windows and doors a few years ago we wanted to match the color of the gutter. For the life of me I don't know why we had a spare peice of the gutter. I took it in, they scanned and mixed it with no problems.

Consumer Reports just had their paint issue and they give the Kilz brand, which you can buy at Walmart, very high ratings. I know a couple people that have used it and have been very happy. I have only used their primer so I can't testify personally about their paint. I am a Benjamin Moore fan though.

I just checked Consumer Reports online and Behr Premium got their top rating and Kilz Casual Colors got their second best rating.

I had selected some of the Disney colors from Home Depot (Behr) but the person I hired to do the painting said that he did not like working with Nehr and preferred one of the Lowes brands. So I took the color chips in to Lowes, they put them into some sort of reader and it determined the correct mix for the colors. Afther the rooms were painted the colors matched the chips exactly.
