How do I know if these are "tradable" pins??

Hi everyone - sorry to ask what I'm sure is a daft question - but I've had a look on the boards and can't find a definitive answer...

I am coming over to WDW (from the UK) in October, and thought that my son (who will then be 3 and a half) might like to do a little bit of “beginners” pin trading, just for fun.

I’ve always been a collector, of various things, and I want to see if he has inherited the gene!

So I have bought him a “my first pin collection” lanyard from an American seller on eBay (so cute) – and also some pins from a UK seller.

The pins were in two sets, from the same person, 6 pins in all. They were inexpensive, and I thought that they would be sufficient to “start off” his lanyard, and give him something to start trading with.

All were just described as “Disney collector’s pins – perfect for your pin collection” and the seller said he had purchased them in WDW Florida, so I figured they would be “tradable”

They have arrived in the mail this morning – and I’m now confused.

One of the pins is MUCH bigger than the others – it’s more like a badge I think – and on the back it says “Disneyland Paris” so clearly the claim to have purchased at WDW was bogus!

It’s a nice badge though – and although too heavy to wear on a lanyard – my son will love it anyway (it’s Mickey dressed as a cowboy), so no big deal, I’m happy to keep it.

The other 5 pins – one each of Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, Pluto and Donald Duck – are smaller – more like the size I expected from seeing photos of other people wearing lanyards. But all they say on the back is DISNEY. Is that right? I had got the impression from reading a few posts about trading that there should be more info on the back of the pin?

So how do I know if these are “tradable”?

I don’t want my son to embarrass himself (or me!) in the park the first time he tries to trade with a CM!

Any help would be appreciated :goodvibes

First of all, welcome to the Collectors Board. :)

From your description, the 5 smaller pins sound like they would be tradable at WDW. Newer pins do have more info, but older pins generally only have the Disney copyright stamped on the back.

I'm not sure about the Mickey cowboy one, though. It almost sounds like it's a button (not all metal, artwork laminated on a card with a safety pin back) and those are not tradable with CMs.

Do you have any way of posting pictures of what you have? If not, you can also check at www.pinpics.com to search for the pins you have. Post a link to the pins or post the pinpics number and we should be able to see if it's tradable or not.

hi Matthew - thanks for the welcome!

I did have a look on pinpics (after seeing it mentioned on this board) for the large Mickey cowboy - but I couldn't find it. It doesn't have any card on it though - or a safety pin pack - it's like a "normal" enamel pin, but a lot bigger.

As for the little pins, I wouldn't know where to start looking for them, as they are just generic little drawings of the 5 characters - no real distinguishing features, if that makes sense.

Could I post a link to the eBay auctions I won, as they have pics of the pins on...? or would that be against the board rules?

Flo

you can't post a link, but you can say
"Look at the pins on ebay listing #111111111111" (each auction has a long number to go with the listing)

Is the Cowboy one this one?

Cowboy Pin

You have to be careful doing searches sometimes. If the pin was released in multiple parks,it won't come up in a search for DL PARIS pins, because the origin is listed as 'mulitple' rather than a special park. Also, when they have a pin that is released in , say, WDW and DL Paris, the reverse of the pins may say WDW for the WDW ones and DL Paris for the DL Paris ones, despite them being the exact same pin on the front.

yup - that's the cowboy one - cute little fella isn't he :-)

I could only find a different cowboy mickey when I searched - you've obviously got the knack!

As for the other little pins - the item # was 6507156966

It'd just be nice to know that they are "safe" to trade as I can't wait to see the little man do his first swap!

Cheers for the help

Here is a link to Official Disney Pin Trading (ODPT) in the section that gives all sorts of information about trading, what is tradeable, and the etiquette for trading.

An important thing to realize is that much of trading is to build or enhance a collection and not trading just for the sake of trading.

Here are your pins ... Pinpics #7772. Looks like they are tradable at WDW.

According to pinpics, they're from a boxed set from Disneyland Paris. Not that big a deal for CM traders, IMO. The seller looks like they're just a casual seller and probably not that familiar with Disney pin trading.

Yep, as said before , those little pins are tradable. I had a set of them and traded with CM's for the ones of the set I didn't want (I kept Goofy and Pluto for son and husband)

You should be fine! Enjoy!

I have a quick question in regards to this....

Are all the Disney pins located on Pin Pics tradable at WDW

Cheers all :-)

yes - I do appreciate that, but in this case it's just a way for my little boy to have a bit of interaction with the CMs and have a bit of fun. I hope that's also ok! :earsboy:

Since it's your first trip trading pins, make sure you go to Scoop's Pin Talk @ Expo Hall in MK @ 1:00.

As long as they match with WDW's pin trading guidelines, yes. Click on the link Cheshire Figment posted above and select "Are there guidelines to Disney pin trading?"

Pinpics does show some fantasy and bootleg pins ... those are NOT tradable.

I know there are some serious collectors out there, but that was not the original reason Official Disney Pin Trading was started. It's supposed to be fun for all ages! Most CMs will tell you to just "collect what you like and don't worry about 'value'" and I agree.

Be aware that there are some opportunities in the parks especially for kids -- look for CMs wearing a GREEN lanyard -- only children can trade for pins on green lanyards! And remind your son that he can trade over and over again. If he trades one of his original pins and then sees something he likes better later, he can trade it back again. My dds (11 & 16) started collecting pins a few years ago and can't get enough of it (me, too!)!

Also, you might want to think about collecting in a certain "category": favorite attractions or a favorite character, for example. My daughters and I started collecting hotel pins from all the Disney hotels we've ever stayed at.

Have a great time!
