How do I convince my Dr. I need an Endocrinologist?

I have an HMO. I must go to the primary care Dr. for everything other than gyno. I can't stand my primary care Dr., long long waits, too hurried, office staff too rushed, too many patients, Dr. misses vital information due to her rush, but I can't switch because this is my third Dr. on the HMO and they will only allow you three doctors (first Dr. suddenly closed practice, second Dr. quit taking HMO).

My gyno is great, love that practice believe it or not, and due to various hormonal issues (PCOS and thyroid) she feels I should see an Endocrinologist. I have spoken with my primary care each time I see her after my bloodwork every three months, and she keeps telling me I don't need one, she can handle everything fine. But she can't!

She lowered my Synthroid dosage because I said I was not feeling right, too tired, dry skin, just yucky. My blood test did not show that it needed to be lowered, but she decided it did, and had no explanation why, just said I need to eat better. But I do eat healthy, I have to or I will be even larger than I already am! And now I feel even worse than before!

I think all she sees when I go into the office is a fat lazy person. I try to explain that I exercise 4 times a week, I have over an acre of gardens that I love to work in outside (tell me how many lazy fat people have deep tans by June even with sunscreen? hello, not lazy here, doctor!), I take long walks almost every day, etc. Doesn't matter.

My blood levels fluctuate. I lost a kidney last year due to medication, and oddly enough my blood work-up the week before I ended up in the hospital showed over limit for potassium and kidney levels (forgot the name suddenly!). She never said a word, and when I saw her after I left the hospital after a 6 day stay, she said she had no time to go over my questions and make another appointment, even though I had already waited over an hour for my appointment with her, just like the other patients. So, I don't have the best relationship with her.

I really desire to see an Endo. She won't give me a referral. My gyno thinks I should see one. She can't give me the referral. Any advice on how to go about getting a referral when your primary care Dr. doesn't feel the need?

I don't think a primary doctor can refuse to give you a referral so you can get a "second opinion" - can she?

Also - during your yearly enrollement renewal - aren't you allowed to change doctors again at that time if you would like to?

I'm just guessing here - based on personal experiences of my own - but I know all insurances (and doctors) are different..

Hope you can get this straightened out..

Personally, I would call your HMO and plead with them to let you find a new doctor. It isn't your fault one dropped your insurance and the other closed down.

When I had an HMO years ago, I was allowed to choose my GYN as my primary care doctor. Is that an option?

Call you insurance company and talk to them about switching. If the person says "no" then ask for their manager. The two changes were not due to your asking.

I would say find a new doctor, but I see that there is a limit of 3 allowed. How can your medical plan penalize you when you are not the one that dropped your previous doctos? :confused3 There has to be some protection for you, the patient/insured. Can you file a complaint against the doctor? File an appeal? Contact your insurance company and explain your situation. If nothing else works, I'd pay out of pocket to see the specialist.

Good luck to you!

Maybe it's possible to get an exception with your HMO provider - it wouldn't hurt to see. Since you had to change due to the practice and not your choice. I'm so lucky that my PCP takes her time with me - I know that doesn't happen often. And when I'm sitting in the waiting area - 30-45 minutes after my appointment time - I KNOW it's because she has been taking her time and being thorough with all of the patients who had appointments prior to mine.

I think you need a new doctor!

I will say that my DD had her thyroid removed last summer by an ENT - I got a referral to a pediatric endocrinologist through DD's PCP - and I was NOT impressed - AT ALL! We have had 3 appointments there - we have to drive about an hour to the appointment - $45 copay - we have seen the Dr. for 5 minutes! He has a Nurse Practitioner that does everything - even fills out the prescription pad - she leaves the room, he signs the pad, then they schedule our next appointment for 3 months later! I can tell she has lots of book smarts - but is missing the "common sense" gene - so doesn't have a complete thought - and I don't get 1/2 of the information I need at the appointment - after the last appointment, she had to call me twice to tell me things she forgot at our appointment. Then she said that they will start charging for phone calls that go over 5 mins.! I'm like - you called me! Of course - this is supposed to be the best Dr. around - maybe so, but I don't get to see him!

Sorry for my rant!

Good Luck in getting things right for you!
