Hi im a UK bride and im getting married at the wedding pavillion in October. I have a concern about my dress. I have seen my dream dress but its a big fairy Tale dress. I have been told that your not allowed to carry them on the plane as hand luggage.

I was wondering if anyone else had the same problem and how you got around it. I dont really want to have to squash the dress in a case but i suppose this is the only way.

Hope you can help.

I have heard of people buying a seat on the plane for the gown. I am driving to FL from IL because I do not want to drag my dress around and we will be down there for 2 weeks so w/ luggage and getting other things down there that is what I am doing, being in the UK, I guess that is not an option...I would look into buying a seat.

My dress was actually so heavy and the whole thing was detailed with sequins, pearls, etc. that it was wrinkle proof. I actually layed it in the overhead bin, overtop our carry on stuff. Someone did try to get into our bin and squish my dress up but my fiance jumped up and said that is a wedding gown is there room in another bin for you. The man was fine with that but i had to think to myself, how stupid? You could plainly see it was a wedding gown. Oh well.

Yes some on here have said they have bought a seat for their gown and some have shipped it to their planner. You have to choose whatever you are comfortable with. Even if my dress was not wrinkle proof i would have still done it that way because I could have booked Carol Allen's for dress steaming before the wedding.

Good luck to you!

hi thanks but i cant afford to do that my seat cost me £600 i think my partner would rather me get married in a bin bag than pay for another seat ha ha ha.

I think i will have to find a big suit case and put it in that.

Thanks again
Jen

Sounds like a great idea. I couldn't afford another seat either but I think no matter what you do you will be fine. You can always get it steamed if it gets wrinkled!

I shipped mine right to Carolyn's via UPS. They brought it to my room and steamed and pressed it. It was GREAT! :teeth:

Of course I don't mind you asking, but I can't remember. I know I have the receipt at home so I can tell you but I think you can go to the UPS website and get a quote if you know how much it weighs. Also, give me a minute and I will get you the website for Carolyns.

BRB. :teeth:

I was a recent UK Bride :) (11 October 2005). I bought a special travel box from the bridal shop for my dress and took it on the plane as hand luggage. We flew British Airways and I had no problem in putting it in the over-head luggage bin. That said, my dress was quite simple and you may encounter difficulties were you to go for this option, if you go for your dream fairy tale dress. It would seem that your best option may be to go for putting it in a suitcase and as others have said, you can always get it steamed if you need to. I would also double check with your airline re: your luggage allowance, just so you are not faced with a huge excess luggage fee to pay.

Hope you find an option that suits you and your dream dress!! Best wishes for your wedding - enjoy every last minute as the day really does go by in a flash!! :)

I am shipping mine and all of the girls dresses...if they ever get here. To Carolyns. I am hoping that they will drop them all off steamed. Then all I will have is the kids dresses. There is a charge for storing your dress but it is really nominal. Since we are on tight timeframes I think that this is better than trying to deal with lugging it around. Mine is pretty poofy.

That's a good idea JonetteA. I thought they were extremely helpful and professional and a delight to do business with. Carolyn herself came to our room at the WL two days before and very carefully steamed out the very last few wrinkles.

My dress has a cathedral train so it was very large and heavy. I had no problems shipping it UPS, especially with a tracking number I felt very secure.

BTW, the great CMs at the WL Front Desk were WONDERFUL about getting me a box and shipping it back for me. ::yes::

I too am from the UK. I was really hoping to carry it on the plane but had worries that they might not let me as this dress has ALOT of fabric and was pretty heavy. I had nightmares of getting to the check-in desk and them telling me that I would just have to put it into the hold in it's dress bag. In the end I decided to buy one of those extra large suitcases. The dress fitted fine in there and I didnt have to squash it in. I also had Carolyn Allen steam my dress on the morning of the wedding....which worked like a dream.

I had the same dress as PrincessMo and still had it steamed. If it is a lot of tulle, please be careful packing it into a suitcase though. I spoke with Carolyn while she was in our room and she said the wrinkled tulle dresses are the most difficult to get steamed... if they ever steam.

If you can't purchase another seat for it, try contacting the airline and see if they might be willing to work for you. If you do have to check, be sure to do so in a hard case. You may even want to put black trashbags around it to keep any liquid, etc. off it in case anything were to happen. More often than not, we fly with dead bodies... if they are put into the cargo hold the wrong way, they leak embalming fluid all over.

Carolyn Allen is $65 for steaming wedding dresses and $15 for each other dress... at least she was 10 days ago!

xoxo

HI

Thanks for your help, the dead bodies part was gross. I will put some kind of packaging round the dress. Getting so excited now but all these little details are stressing me out.

I thought it was, too. We had a friend who worked for a major airline in this country at one of the largest airports in the world. He was the one who told us about it. Just do everything you can to protect it... and keep it in your possession if possible!

We did buy mine a seat, but the attendants kept trying to tell us it had to go in the bin, not realizing we bought the seat. So it appeared that they do that all the time with no problems, so I'd say go that route. Just make sure you watch that no one else tries to put anything on top of it.

i flew with virgin atlantic and i packed mine in a hard shelled suitcase (had to go out and buy one specially for it). it got there fine, i labelled it fragile. if you decide to pack it in your hold luggage, take the suitcase to the bridal shop you got it from (got mine from berketex bride) when you collect it and they should be able to pack it for you in acid free tissue paper to help prevent creases. i must have had about half a tree in mine, there was so much paper!!! theyre the best people to pack it, i wouldnt have had a clue how to do it!!!
hope that helps. and as everyone else has said, you can always get it steamed if it does get there creased.

I could not afford to buy another seat either....that is part of the reason we are driving, so my dress can stay with me the whole time. My cousin went to Jamica on vacation and said there were so many girls boarding the plane and carrying on dresses, but most likely not as elaborate, since many are beach weddings, but who knows what they had, she said that she felt bad for them lugging those things around. Good luck- I would put it in a suitcase and carry it w/ you.
