How did ur parents come up with ur name?

Friends of my parents were at my house and the wife mentioned that she thought the name Laura was pretty and my mom obviously agreed. :)

I was supposed to be called Elen, I don't know why. Then when I was born my mother didn't think I "looked" like an Elen, and so changed her mind and called me Elin. :goodvibes

My dad named me after Sophia Loren. What my name was before that was just a name my mother liked I guess...my middle name is from my mother's friend's name or something.

What's the difference, are they pronounced differently?

elen = elle-in
elin = elle-in

To me at least.

I'm named Sonya after my mom's cousin.

How do you pronounce your name? I have two friends named Sonya and one is said SAWN-ya and the other is said SOON-ya

SEWN-yah.
As in "I sew with a machine". "It was sewn into the shirt".

The NORMAL way. If you say SAWN yah I will rip ya to shreds! Grates on my nerves. Years ago when my area was rural, everyone would say it sawnyah or even zoneyah. Now that the city has moved in, everyone's got it right on sewnyah.

Sewn-ya is really weird for me. But I don't know anyone other than my friend's Dutch exchange student with that name. Her name is Sonja and we say it like sawn.

Anyhoozle.
My parents picked my name because it wasn't on the list of the top baby names. Apparently in 1993, it was cool to pick off that list? Like come on, we don't need anymore Jessica's or Jennifer's running around.
I have issues with really generic names, and all of my friends have them. It's not like 'oh my god your name sucks' it's more like 'Wow your parents weren't very original.'

My mom had my brother and I's names picked out from when she was a teen :p

So I'm stuck with Megan.

I've known about 20 or so Megans in my lifetime.
I want an original name... so should I ever have kids, they'll be stuck with something unique.

well when my mom was in labor they still hadn't thought of a name so my dad kept annoying my mom with it and she just blurted out the first one she thought of. Kathryn :goodvibes lol and now i know like 4 other girls who spell it the same way and like 3 other Katies. I like my name though :thumbsup2

The other way you can pronounce it is like sone-ya. Sone as is sonar.

Or, here's a video pronunciation. Click around 10-11 seconds. That's how you say my name.

On the flip side, I've never heard of Sonya being pronounced "sawn-ya"
I've always read it the way you pronounce it "sewn-ya"

My sister wanted the initials J.T.

Hence my First and Middle Joshua Tyler

:eek:

Mine is Holly.
I was born in august so if you subtract 9 months I was conceived around november.
So, I'm guessing mom found out about me around december. Holly = christmas.
I am reminded of when I was made everytime I hear my name

I have a cousin named Sonja (norwegen) and it's pronounced Sewn-ya, like SEW, as said before. But I know a Sawn-ya too.

I'm Rebekah Marie. Not sure where Rebekah came from, but i have a cousin named Isaac and I always get teased about it. (they were cousins and married in the Bible!) Marie is my grandma's middle name, and my mom's and mine, so that's what I got stuck with. my first daughter's name will have it too :)

Well my first name is Deva (Dayva) and my mom got it from a little girl she used to babysit when she was my age (17). She told me that she loved her name and she promised herself that she would name her daughter that. My middle name, Danielle, is from hurricane Danielle. She went into labor on the 24th and she found out that it was a hurricane and they named it Danielle. She decided when I was born that it had a good ring to it! here's the description from wikipedia:
September 25, 1992 – Tropical Storm Danielle brushes the outer banks, causing light flooding which destroys three houses
Anyways--I don't like my first name because no one ever pronounces it right. They either call me diva dev-a so yea.....I love my middle name though :) And I also hate the fact that everyone in my family's initials are CA.....
Mom = Cari Annette
Bro = Cade Ashby
Grandpa = Carl Anthony
Uncle = Carl ANthony Jr.
GRRRRRR
I want to name my kids more traditional names.
For a girl I've always loved Linnea, Rose, Belle or Bella, Meghan, Kayley, and others.
For boys I like Aiden, Caleb, Caden, and others.
