How did ur parents come up with ur name?

i think my parents just liked Caitlin, nothing too exciting lol/
my middle name is Lillian which is my great grandmothers name, I like Lillian a lot.

as for Sonya.....I always pronounce it Sone-ya, never heard anything say Sewn-ya before, I've also heard Sawn-ya, but I always say Sone-ya.
I have a friend named Tamara and it's pronounced Tam-ah-ra, not Tam-ay-ra and it always gets mixed up.

Aren't those the same pronunciation?
I keep saying them out loud to see if they're different xD

lol, S-OH-NYA vs S-EW-NYA/
i'm saying it differently but maybe its' the same hehe.
to my it's like sewnya is sue-nya and sohnya is sone-ya

never heard anyone pronounce it as my version of sewnya IRL so maybe im making it up?? lol

ETA;
oooooooooh lol i just realized that sew is pronounced SOH anyways bahaha. ok im so smrt :rotfl:

SEWN-yah.
As in "I sew with a machine". "It was sewn into the shirt".

The NORMAL way. If you say SAWN yah I will rip ya to shreds! Grates on my nerves. Years ago when my area was rural, everyone would say it sawnyah or even zoneyah. Now that the city has moved in, everyone's got it right on sewnyah.

Ahh, okay. I've heard it said tons of different ways, so I was just curious :thumbsup2

No problem. It just gets annoying when I first meet people and say my name sone/sewn-yah, not sawn-yah, and then from that point on they keep calling me sawn-yah. I've learned to just ignore them then, but it bothers the hell out of my best friends.

And for what it's worth, I'm not Scandinavian, nor is the cousin I'm named after. We're Spanish, with a little bit of German thrown in. My name plus my looks = everyone thinking I'm Scandinavian or Russian.

Isn't sewn-yah and sone-yah pronounced the same? I'm guilty of thinking it was sawn-yah, but that's because I've only know 1 other Sonya in my life and that's how she said it.

Anyway, I have no idea why my parents named me Jennifer. I guess they just liked it?

Elen - Ale-En or Elle-en.
Elin = Ale-in or Elle-in.

i think with your accent it probably sounds different but with a north american accent they both sound the same pretty much. lol

i like the how its pronounced 'ale-in' i like that better than L-in

Remind me never to move to Wales or Ireland. My American accent pronounces all that you just listed the same! :headache: As for the Irish, I just learnt how to spell Saoirse, ask me to pronounce it and I'll die.

^^^ it's like sare-sha right?? lol
at least that's how i think it is for some reason :confused3

it doesn't help that I'm no good at spelling things phoneticly. (sp?)

My parents used to live in Germany (this was before the name Sophie was sort of popular and it was VERY uncommen) and there was a street they would always passed called "Sophie Straße" (sophie strasse, sophie street) and they always loved it.
My other name choice was going to be Sterling, but my mum saw it on a shower head so she decided against it. Yet I don't exactly understand how being named after a street sign is better than being named after something it said on a shower head xD

My dad liked the name luis and my mom liked the name enrique. And around here Luis is usually followed by something else so they put them together and now I'm Luis Enrique.

I have never heard 'Tam-ay-ra' before ever in my life. It's always the first you said or 'ta-marr-ah'
