How crowded will California Adventure really be .....

I am thinking of going out to the Left Coast for The Rose Bowl Parade. My original thought was to come home on NYD late after the Parade or early on January 2. However, there is now a cheapish flight back east on Sunday January 3. That would leave me a full day to visit California Adventure. However, how crowded will it really be? Do they close it like MK? Would I be looking at 2-3 hour waits for attractions?
Is it worth the 1 day visit or should I visit another LA site and save West Coast Disney for a dedicated multi-day trip (Which unfortunately would not be any time soon :))

Your thoughts are welcome

Thanks

Very crowded.

We went to the Rose Parade this year (4th one in my lifetime and well worth it if you've never seen one) and we also spent a couple of days at DLR as part of the trip.

Disneyland and California Adventure were both extremely crowded that week, though CA didn't feel quite as bad, partly because it has more walking room. To get an idea of how that crowd impacts wait times at attractions, you can go to the Touring Plans site and look at their wait time predictions.

We had pretty good success by getting to the park as soon as it opened, which last year was 8 AM all week, and 7 AM for the people staying at the Disneyland resorts. We also took maximum advantage of the single rider lines, which they have for Radiator Springs Racers, California Screamin, and Soarin. They also have them for Goofy's Sky School, which we didn't do because it's just like Primeval Whirl, and Grizzly River Run, which we skipped because the high temperatures were in the upper 50's.

You can also get FPs for a few things, though the return times got pretty late pretty fast. For RSR by the time we entered the park the line at the FP station was already long from the people who had gotten in early and the FPs were gone for the day within the first hour or two. But, rather than worrying about a FP, we went right to the ride and rode single rider and were on in less than 10 minutes. We used a FP for Tower of Terror, but did everything else standby or single rider and did everything we want.

The World of Color Show is also outstanding. We did the WOC lunch package at the Carthay Circle restaurant, which we really enjoyed both because the food and services were excellent and the restaurant itself is interesting to see. That was our one ADR for the trip.

If you have the chance, I would recommend going to CA if only to see the Cars Land area, which is very well done and very fun.

I have not been to CA in years and years. Do they use FP+ like in Florida or is it pick up passes on the day of yout visit? I know i sound like a rookie, but actually am for that park

Yes, it is the old paper FP system, not FP+.

When we were there, there were about 6 or 7 attractions with FP. The ones I remember are the 5 I mentioned above that also have single rider lines and Tower of Terror. There are also FPs for World of Color, and you pretty much have to have one to get a decent view of the show. As I said, we got ours with a lunch package, and I understand that the other ones go pretty quickly and often require a wait in line. But, I have no first hand experience with that.

We found the single rider lines to be more useful and efficient than FPs.

Yes it's still the paper FP at DCA. if you get a FP for WOC it doesn't affect your ability to get another FP unlike at WDW

You can pick up WOC Fastpasses in the morning and still pull Fastpasses for a ride as it isn't connected to the FP system. If you are hopping, you can have FPs for DCA and DL as well as for WOC.

Hydroguy on the DL Board has a lot of FP and Carsland tips.

I'd post your question over on the Disneyland board.

Except that it's been answered pretty well already. :)

OP, weirdly the "themeparks attractions and strategies" board is for WDW. But you got good answers here. Future questions, though, might want to be posted on the Disneyland forum here. Have fun!

Don't do it! It is the busiest time of the year, fastpass that you get in the morning will have late return times.
