I lost my MTV!

All the music channels (everything that MTV is supposed to be) shut down this week in the UK and other countries. All that’s left in these areas is the MTV really RTV (reality television). Not surprising considering how consumption has changed.

Until now. The music video specific channels are gone… the lone channel still on will have little if any music.

Yeah - if there were/are channels showing music videos I've somehow missed it! I wonder (not really-just rhetorical) if bands or singers still make videos? I suppose some may do so, depending on the market they serve.

I understand that everything is accessible on YouTube and that it's been ages since MTV was the product it was in the 80s (and even 90s) but it's still kind of sad to see it go. I've been in a Duran Duran sort of place of late and just this morning, I was thinking about how happy I used to get if I just happened to flip to MTV and timed it with them showing Rio, The Reflex, etc. Ya know, a time when everything wasn't immediately accessible and there was a little bit of extra joy if you happened to catch something you really liked. I was listening to Bowie's Blue Jean the other day and thinking about how I was watching when that video premiered, and how new video premiers were such a big deal back then. I could go on, but I'm sure many of you get it.

Bittersweet but loved hearing that they signed off with Video Killed the Radio Star. It feels fitting.

I'm really dismayed, and a bit shocked, that anyone gives a flying rats you know what about MTV... it died years ago and became just another channel with reality TV garbage. MTV once defined a generation. Today, those 80s and 90s bands push their content straight to their ageing fans bypassing any need for MTV. Sayonara Martha, Mark, Nina, and Alan, RIP to JJ. Now if they would just fully pull the plug on the reality TV garbage we'd all be better off. /soapbox off
