How crazy is 4th of July?

We're looking at vacations for 2012, and thinking of going to California. It would end up, with the 4th being on a Wed, that we'd be there that week. We don't have to go that week..just easier with work. Do you think it would be better to go the week prior, or is it doable? We've been to WDW during Thanksgiving and summer and are used to those crowds, but I've never been to Disneyland, so I'm wondering how bad it will be. Thanks.

We visited DLR last year over the 4th of July weekend ~ 7/2-5 - we had a fantastic time - crowds were low to moderate *the evening of the 4th was a little busy, but each morning for the 1st couple hours the parks were empty. We hope to return again this year ~ DD's b-day is 7/3!

I've been on the 4th of July weekend the last 2 years. Not as crowded as I expected. In fact in 2010, I was shocked at how light the crowds really were. However, by 7:00pm the crowds had arrived and they stayed. That evening, the FastPass line for Space Mountain was 30 minutes long. I don't mean the line to get a FastPass, but the line to use[/i[ your previously acquired FastPass.

There is something really neat about being at Disneyland on the 4th of July. I'm contemplating doing it again this year. I wouldn't be surprised if the crowds aren't bad during the day of the 4th, but plan on very, very, very large crowds for the fireworks. They usually have 3 Fantasmic shows that night for a reason.

We did a 4th of July when it fell on a Tuesday in 2006... We were there every day of that week and the the 4th was the quietest....As all the APs are blacked out and due to the holiday not forming a long weekend (less out of towners) it was quiet through most of the day, it only really got busier for the fireworks...
