How "contemporary" is the Contemporary?

While I would love to check out this resort.. I am not at all into the "modern" look of bright colors and weird patterns....

Does the resort echo that or is it more subtle? (In the room decor and such..)

They haven't bothered us, but some are bothered by the colors. On your next trip, stop the resort and ask to see a room. If they aren't busy (and/or full), they will sometimes let you see.

We stay every year at the CR, although this year we tried the GF. I honestly don't think the CR is all that "themed" modern. Its not "jetson"like. Its more no theme to me. Just alot of action in the lobby, great shops, wonderful restaurants and helpful, friendly staff. Rooms are large, tower room views great, but, I do think the grounds can be better. If your looking for a certain theme, then I wouldn't suggest the CR. Its our favorite of all the deluxes and we missed it soooo much this year. We already made ressies for our next summer vacation.

As Kimmar in other threads has stated,"Entering the Contemporary, you feel like you are entering the future...1970. Oh yeah that is the past". Sorry CR fans! :(

Maybe AspiringCindy and Kimmar think the CR is from the past but I can personally tell you that as far as I'm concerned and many other posters here who have stayed at the Cr many times nothing could be further from the truth. Of course that is just my opinion and everyone is welcome to thier own.

We have stayed there 3 times in the past 3 years and there is nothing 70's about it at all to me. You'll know this by staying in the rooms and the whole atmosphere you get by being there as a guest at all times!

By the way we stay at numerous hotels and resorts throughout the year that are probably considered some of the nicer hotels due to business so I have many different top of the line places to compare the CR to and it IMHO is one of the best resorts we've ever (and I emphasize EVER) stayed at!!

We can't even consider staying anywhere else because of the convience to MK. The monorail service and not having to take a 30 min to 1 hour bus ride to the MK is invaluable to us. We usually walk to the MK in the morning( they have a path) which is less than 10 minutes and then take the monorail back to the resort which is less than 5 minutes. You just can't beat that!!;)

I agree the contemporary is from the past. The only color there is the bright purple costumes the front desk agents wear! its not a sleek modern hotel like it sounds.

This link should take you to the wdwig site - there seem to be alot of pictures of the Contemporary. I have never stayed there, so I don't have an opinion. Hope this helps.

My family of 5 stayed at The Contempory for 10 days this year. We were a little leery about staying there as we stayed at The Lodge last time and we were afraid that we would be let down a little due to lack of a theme and fun things to do. We were wrong.

Though we were not impressed with the grounds, the room in the west Garden Wing was huge and the food was great. Kids running in the hall way early in the morning was annoying, but that happens every place. The pool was so so but the kids had just as much fun as in any other pool. Its open 24/7 so we never had to hurry back to go swimming like some of the other resorts.

What makes the big C a winner in our minds was far and above the ease of getting to the MK just by walking. Walking was a great stress reliever and a good way to beat the crowd crush at the Monorail after the park closed. It gave us some personal, private time in the middle of a very crowded place. We went to the MK every night for the Fireworks, walking made it seam like we were home and just had to go out in the back yard to see the show.

The Modern theme is a little over played, it's more like staying at a non Disney hotel, except for a Monorail. So for as much time as we actually spent there, the theme, it's really more like a lack of one, you don't even notice.

I'm another Contemporary fan:D The convenience of walking to MK is incredible! It's also nice to be able to walk back at night when there are huge lines for the monorail, busses, and ferries. We'll be staying at the CR for the 3rd time in 3 years next April:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

I have a lot of pictures of the Contemporary, including rooms and restaurants... you can find them HERE. There are links at the top of the page that will show you around the resort.

I thought the CR was cool. The room colors are wild, and to me they are pretty Contemporary---maybe not 2003, but more like what Contemporary was in 1988...lots of BOLD colors- the walls are blue and yellow with some black and white stripes thrown in for good measure. The carpets I think were a dark blue or black, but with purple, orange and green designs in them (one orange stripe looks like an extension cord) and the bathroom is really nice. Black and white marble. Best of all, the rooms are HUGE even if they are a little wacky in color scheme. Funky chairs throughout the hotel to lounge on--- I did think 'Jetsons' while walking around the hotel. And as others have posted- the ability to walk to the MK is AWESOME. Same with taking the monorail to Epcot. Very nice indeed.

Bright colors and patterns...that about sums it up.

Think the Jetsons.

Another CR fan!

We stayed there Aug 2001 and loved it! Our dd was 2.5. CR is a great place for little ones. We were in the north garden wing. I especially loved watching the fireworks at MK from our window.

however, the OP was wondering if it was "modern" and I want to say yes, but comfortable. The colors are modern and as a matter of fact the rooms are designed to make you feel as though you are in a piece of contemporary art (check out the artwork on the walls) I was a bit leary about staying here at first but my dh insisted this is where he has wanted to stay ever since he was a child, so I complied and boy was I HAPPY! It is a bit loud but not overwhelming, it is not for everyone, but to me and my family, you can't beat it. I wish we could afford to stay there again this year (but we need two rooms and it is out of our budget unfortunately). I don't believe if you were to stay there you would be disappointed, but sounds like you may be more comfortable elsewhere.

GOOD LUCK in what you decide!

The Contemporary is a lot of fun and I think it is really a resort worth trying. The rooms are definitely bright and somewhat ugly (in my opinion). They are colorful and fun, but somewhat over the top. In this way, the modern/Jetson theme is evident. However, I did not find the lobby or rest of the resort to scream out as much. In contrast, everything else seemed somewhat laid back and cool. I loved how the monorail went through the resort and the California Grill was a lot of fun for dinner. It is definitely one of the most kid-friendly resorts in Disney World and I really think it's worth a try. My biggest complaint was that the pool was kind of dull, but it was suitable. If you can afford the tower rooms, definitely spend the extra money to stay there. We stayed in the garden wings and while it was fine, we felt you could get more of the whole "Contemporary" feel by staying in the tower. Regardless, try it out and I'm sure you will love it!

I love the CR. We stayed there for the first time this summer and between the CBR and CR, I think I have found my two favorite spots. I stayed at the WL and really disliked it. I think that the CR has more to offer in the way of food, and the bigness of the rooms can't be beat. I would recommend that you stay there as it is an incredible resort. Like others have said the grounds aren't well themed, but it is an awesome resort.

We stayed at the Contemporary several times between 1981 and 1991 (before becoming DVC members). It was always my absolutely favorite resort. I loved the rooms, which are huge and the proximity to the MK.

We stayed there again in March, 2000 and were really surprised at the new decor. I found it somewhat jarring compared to my memories...very bold and vibrant, in my opinion. Everything seems to have a pattern on it or is emblazoned in bright primary colors. Consequently, the room seemed much smaller to us, although the size certainly hadn't changed. I was not too wild about it, but nothing stays the same.....it is still a wonderful hotel.
