How Come People Don't Like "Outside Hallways"

I'm just curious, I see so many complaints about the Disney hotels that have doors that open to the outside rather than an interior hallway and I was just wondering why people don't like that?

We stayed at POFQ and LOVED it, it didn't bother me at all that there were no interior hallways. We didn't experience any noise or anything and I loved opening the door and being outside rather than in some boring hallway. I would say it would be nice to have a balcony, but the outside hallway was no big thing.

I don't feel as safe if I'm alone in hotels with that kind of setup. It may all be in my head but it's the only one I have. :rotfl2:

I also don't like that the only window(s) face out inches from where others are walking. And yes, I love having a balcony or patio.

But I would never complain about the setup. It is what it is and if I book it, I'll deal.

I think some think it is a safety issue. They feel more secure actually being inside a building (more like an apartment) rather than entering from the outside where perhaps an intruder could just push their way in. Unlikely at Disney, but these days you never know. Hope that sheds a little insight for you. Again, it all comes down to personal preference. :flower: :flower:

Personally, I like exterior hallways on bldgs of 4 stories of less, easier to escape in case of fire.

At a Disney Resort, they're fine - but if I'm traveling alone and stopping in strange towns along the way, I don't want to stay at a "drive-up" motel.. I just wouldn't feel safe.. If someone were traveling with me, then I wouldn't mind.. :flower:

I feel safer with inside hallways, also. I enjoy the pretty themed carpet and wallpaper in the WDW resorts. We are almost always in a villa and not as close to the door so we rarely hear noise.

I would hate to give up the large sliding glass door out onto the balcony. The first thing I do when coming in my room is open the curtains all the way, step out on the balcony and admire the view. The thought of having only one window that people walk past ... no way!!

People don't tend to step into an inside hallway and smoke in a non-smoking building as they sometimes do with an outside hallway. People also don't tend to gather outside there rooms to talk with an inside hallway so they can be quieter

But they do smoke and gather on the villa balconies...I think it evens out with DVC resorts.

For me it's the noise. Hotels with outside corridors tend to be noiser. Parents are more likely to talk louder outside, let their kids run around, congregate in groups, etc. I think there is an expectation in people that for hotels with indoor hallways, they need to be more quieter.

Depends on who I'm traveling with -- with my frail mother who uses a wheelchair, I prefer inside hallways as it keeps her protected from the weather when going to the food court, restaurants, etc. If it's just me and friends, we can always sprint, or just get wet. :umbrella:

I've never had a big problem with them, but I do think you get more "critters" in your room with an outside hallway. It is very hard to enter your room at night without letting a bug in when there is a light right by your door.

Here's one reason of why I prefer an indoor corridor.

During our stay at CSR in 1999 there was a guy who must've had on cowboy boots or something! He was in one room, and evidently his friends or co-workers were a few doors down from him. He kept walking back and forth, back and forth past our room....sounded like a horse walking outside of our door! Needless to say we were all awake bright and early that morning!

If it had've been an inside corridor with a carpeted floor, this wouldn't have been a problem.

I always fill safer with the inside hallway. And the balcony is a wonderful plus!

The only place I feel safe with the "outside hallway" setup is at Disney....I have stayed at one before WDW and didn't like it at all....but Disney is different....I just feel safe!

When not a Dis, I do believe in the safety issue.

To me part of on site is the whole Disney experience which includes a lobby and additional CM interaction. I like that when I come and go I am told to "have a disney day or a magical evening".

I wouldn't mind it at WDW, but my DH and Mom would prefer not to have outside walkways. It just seems safer and less "motel-y".

I like both for different reasons. Although I would not like an outdoor if I was staying in some strange town. The only ones I don't think I would like at all for an extented stay would be the Value resorts. They are OK for one or 2 nights but not beyound that but that is only my option. It really boils down to ones preferance.

It's not so much that I hated the exterior hallway, it's that I appreciated the private balcony. I loved having my morning coffee out there. Dragging a chair out on the walkway isn't the same thing.

I don't mind the outside hallways for a short trip, but for longer trips I'd miss having a balcony.

I like interior halls also. It just makes me feel like I am "a part " of the resort. The inside halls leads you to the lobby, gift shops, etc...
