How 'cold' is it really in december?

Unfortunately, There is no straight answer for December.

We've been there when it was absolutely freezing, jackets all the time, ABSOLUTELY NO THOUGHT OF GETTING NEAR, LET ALONE IN A POOL.

We have also been there when it felt like late Spring or early fall where we were sweating and couldn't wait to get back from the park and hop in the pool.

I've seen people in a pool, at night, whrn the outside temp is in the 40's. The pools are heated and you see "steam" rising up. Getting in the pool might be OK. Personally the thought of getting out of the pool #shiver

So the weather is all over the place but it's normally 50s as a low-ish and 70s as a high-ish, but should expect a cold front to pass through which could effect 2-3 days but then will go back to the avg temps most likely, until another cold front if any.

All unpredictable I know but it sounds like this is the pretty typical forecast to assume with some praying also lol.

Am I on the right track..... ?

By golly I think you've got it. The only thing I can say from experience is that despite any weather forecast, pack for a little bit of everything. A few years back we packed according to the forecast of 70's-80's and got slammed with 30's and 40's. This past trip I packed shorts, and pants, tshirts and coats. Luckily I never needed the coats :yay:

I just posted this on another thread.. 2010 (first week of December) it was FREEZING at night, I think a pp said it was in the 30's at night.. Check the forecast before you go, noting what the temps are during the day AND the night temps..

we were there that week too, our forecast literally changed WHILE I was packing. Packing Fri afternoon for a Sat flight. At 9am, the week was suppose to be sunny and 70s, by 4 o'clock the entire forecast changed to record low temps. I never repacked so fast in all my life:lmao:. Then by the end of the week, the kids were in the pool.

You are right, the forecast must have changed at the last minute, because NOBODY, (except maybe your family!) was prepared for how cold it was.

The last two Decembers we have been in WDW, the first and second week. It was usually in the 80s during the day and 60s at night. One night each trip dropped to the 50s. For the Christmas party both years we had toboggans and gloves on. Pack for every season.

Haha well thanks! Couldn't do it without you guys :) I'm hoping really hard to not need coats but they will be packed incase, thanks for the tips!

December in FL is "kitchen sink" weather. That means you need to pack everything, including the kitchen sink. We have been uncomfortably hot at Disney in December. We have been frozen solid in December (as in 20's and windy in the AM). And the forecast is usually not reliable enough for the tail end of a week's vacation to trust it. So just pack it all. Do know that usually it's awesome sweatshirt weather though.

Thanks mom2rtk you are always so helpful! Along with everyone else of course :)

We were there during the cold snap in 2010 too! I remember our last day in the MK I was in Tomorrowland and all the raised planters were covered with plastic. It was about 10am, I checked my phone and it was 23!!! I think it got up to about 34 that afternoon. It was so cold!

We have done quite a few trips the first few weeks of December and have seen low 20's to 90. We pretty much take 2 of everything (2 shorts, 2 capri, 2 jeans, 2 tanks, 2 long sleeve, etc) regardless of the weather forecast and layer and do laundry if needed. We almost always need to use most of our clothes at some point during the week. We fly so we try and wear our heaviest clothes on the plane along with our coats and stuff to save luggage space.

Everyone complains about summer trips, but I actually love them because they are soooooo much easier to pack for.

In Dec 2012 it was hot. HOT HOT HOT. Pool weather every day.

This past Dec 2013 it was warm 2 days, hot one day, and cool the rest. On the cool days we layered t-shirt, long sleeve t-shirt and fleece jacket with jeans and we were barely warm enough.

Well you probably will need a coat for when you go to the airport and come home at least. The rest is like others have said, it's sort of variable.

Weather prediction for Wednesday, April 16, 2014: 2 - 4 inches of snow.

You are quite welcome. :goodvibes

We actually packed our coats on the way out the door for our trip in 2010. If ever there was a time we needed them, that was it. But I never could bring myself to put it on, even on that coldest morning when we arrived at the MK at 7:30 for early entry. Instead we went for layers. LOTS of layers. Thermal underwear, long sleeve t-shirts, short sleeve t-shirts, I think I had 4 layers plus a fleece jacket. In the end, I just couldn't bear the thought of entering a Disney park and taking photos in front of the castle in the same coat I wear around home schlepping kids around town in the snow.

Our secret weapon though was chemical handwarmers. I don't leave home without them now on a December trip. I could have totally cleaned up selling those around the parks. I'm amazed the head mouse hasn't thought of it already.

You'll also want a blanket if it's cold out, if you intend to sit waiting for a parade or fireworks. The concrete gets really cold sometimes.

Out of all our stays at Disney, seven of them have been during the first week of December.

Perhaps we've just been lucky, but we've always had nice weather and were able to swim on each visit. The day time temps on our trips were usually in the mid to high seventies, some visits we had temps in the low eighties. The only time it was "chilly" was in the early morning and even then, the lows were only in the mid fifties and by 11am it warmed up. The most we've ever needed was a hoodie or light jacket, maybe a long sleeved tee in the early morning.

I can't ever imagine us packing gloves, hats, winter jackets and thermals for our trips in early December. Even at home, I don't wear any of that until the temps drop to the single digits! However, I've seen Disney employees wearing heavy winter jackets when it's sixty five degress. :rotfl2:

My family goes nearly every year for Christmas. My friend once asked me what the weather was like. I asked him for the winning lottery numbers.

The weather is incredibly uncertain. This makes it difficult to pack and even plan for the day. I've gotten packing for the Christmas vacation down to a science, however.

Normally, I check the weekly weather forecast the weeks going into the trip and at the very last minute. For example, we left Tuesday, December 24th for our trip. I had an idea of what i wanted to wear, and on Sunday, December 22nd, I checked the weather and started to pack. Then on Monday, I finished packing and sealed my suitcase.

I normally pack for the 60s. Most days I'm comfortable in jeans and a short-sleeve or long-sleeve shirt. However, we have been to Disney when it has been miserably cold, and we have been to Disney when it was delightfully hot.

I remember our first year I thought "wow, December in Florida, I can't wait to get out of the cold weather and sit in shorts by the pool!" While the Amtrak ride was dreadful, it proved to be our saving grace. We had to pack on the layers on our trip from Long Island to Penn Station. Carrying suitcases filled with shorts, t-shirts, a few pairs of pants and shirts, we made our way to Penn Station wearing the opposite - hoodies, winter coats, etc. When we got to Disney it was 70, sunny and gorgeous outside. I ran into the room and peeled off my layers. Well, we didn't see the sun the rest of our trip. The temperatures topped out at 50 to mid-50s, and at night it was low 40s (sometimes even 30s) and miserably cold! We were so unprepared!

The next year (2010) we overpacked. We packed winter coats, gloves, scars, hoodies, all long-sleeve shirts, pants, thick socks, etc. Well, it was hotter most days than none. We were hot and uncomfortable all day with our heavy clothes.

In 2011 we took a break because a friend got married in Disney in April 2012. It was so nice to dress for one season!

In 2012, I had a plan. I started to break my packing into separate groups:
I had my base layer. The base layer would be my day-to-day wardrobe. Even in the 70s, I was comfortable in jeans and a t-shirt. It gets hot, but has not gotten uncomfortably hot during our past few trips. So I pack jeans, long-sleeve and short-sleeve shirts.

Then I pack for extreme temperatures. I wear a hoodie and a coat down on the plane. That leaves some room in my suitcase. I pack a sweater or two and I already have my hoodie to wear down. I also pack gloves, a scarf, a hat and some thick socks. If it gets a little chilly, I put on my hoodie. If it's very cold, I'll start layering with a coat and the scarf/gloves etc. Also, I started packing a thermal to stick under my shirts. It's an easy way to layer without the bulk!

But what if it gets hot? I normally sleep in mesh shorts. They're comfortable even for the parks. I pack two pairs regardless of the temperature and pack two nice pairs of shorts. I never swim on the trip, so no need for a bathing suit.

Basically, I pack for late October or late March/early April in New York. It could be sunny and 70, or cold and 35 degrees at night (we're going through this now!)

My rule of thumb for planning the day is this:
- If it's not sunny out, it's gonna be chilly. It doesn't matter if the weather is calling for 70-degree temperatures. Disney is surrounded by water and with the humidity, there will always be a chill.
- If the temperature does not hit 70+ and there's not sun, it's going to be chilly at night
- Always wear at least a hoodie at night. There will be a breeze
- Cut your day in half. My family always takes a break due to the crowds - but it also gives us a chance to change. If it's 65 outside during the day, we wear jeans and a t-shirt or shirt in the parks. At night, it may be low 50s. Going back to the room gives us the opportunity to grab a hoodie or jacket.

Of course, the weather depends on where you are from. Being from New York, 40 or 50 degrees doesn't feel like a vacation (not counting this year) but for someone from Minnesota or Alaska, 40 or 50 degrees is tropical!

THis past year the weather was incredible. It rained one day (normally rains an average of 5 days in December in Orlando.) We had multiple days in the 70s - including Christmas day and NYE. I wore a t-shirt more often than I wore a jacket. At night, I was comfortable in a wool button-down shirt and jeans.

It varies tremendously. The one December we experienced 70-80 and highs of 40 in the same week, and though I am from the nOrtheast and used to COLD winter weather, I can tell you it is alot different( colder) when you are trekking through themeparks all day

We learned the hard way about packing a little bit of everything. We had packed shorts and pants; long and short sleeved shirts; sweaters or sweatshirts; and light weight jactets. We actually left our winter coats in our car in Ohio. Fast forward to the end of the week, and we're dressed in long pants, sweaters, and jackets in EPCOT shivering watching the Candlelight Processional. Weather was OK during the day, but as soon as the sun went down the weather cooled off significantly and there was a cold breeze blowing across the lake.

On the other hand, being from the north, I've gone to the water parks on several of my trips.

Eeek a little nervous to go out of my families comfort zone of October to December with hearing these stories of some of you being so cold you have the shivers, it sounds almost unbearable (mostly for the little ones) to enjoy the parks. Hmm decisions decisions... December is definitely a toss up just like the weather lol!

Planning a trip for the first two weeks of December. I have been told the weather cools off a lot. I have also heard of the few 'off' years where it dropped to 30s-40s but from what I understand that is very rare?

How cold is it really? or shall I say 'cool'. We are from New England so 50s-70s in December would be beautiful. Is it ever close to 80s? I know it's unpredictable but just curious to get some input from some frequent December goers :)

the weather is all over I always go the first 2 weeks of December and it has been 40-80........but the two things you can count on is the weather will be better than at home and your at Disney so it really dosent matter.......have fun

That is very true! I must say I think we will take the leap and hope for the best :)
