How close is HIFS to the parks?

We have a reservation at HIFS in early October. I was curious as to how close this hotel really is to the parks and whether it is feasible to return to the hotel for naps/rest during the middle of the day. I also wondered why there are no outstanding rates after 10/3/02 during the month of October at the DTD Courtyard by Marriott. I know attendance generally is up for MNSSHP but that's not til a little later in the month. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help!

HIFS couldn't be any closer to most of the parks! It's a great location. We returned every afternoon with ease.

To give you a general idea, I timed us from pulling out of our parking space at HIFS to being parked at Blizzard Beach and it was under 10 minutes!

It's a wonderful location :)

Have a great trip!

Teresa

You can't get any closer. You are right at the gate!!!

Thanks for responding. I've seen some negative and some positive impressions of HIFS. This will be our first family trip to WDW and after a tremendous amount of research, I just can't justify staying onsite without the benefit of EE or a suite (which we couldn't afford) or free breakfast/dinner. HIFS may not serve gourmet cuisine on the buffet, but frankly, I think we'll be either too excited in the mornings or too tired in the evenings to care!

Thanks again!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc

It was our first trip to WDW last week too. We decided to spend 1/2 time off-site and 1/2 on-site to see how we liked each. We loved both for different reasons.

When we first arrived we were shocked to discover we were right outside of Disney property, it's so convienant!

We thought the buffets were fine. Just average buffet, but plenty of selections.

Have a wonderful trip!

Did you request a specific floor or room location at HIFS? How crowded were the parks in early September? Thanks for your help. I'm a planaholic (you won't find this one in Websters) and I'm trying very hard to save $$$ where I can.

Thanks again!

Bev:rolleyes:

I'm a planaholic (lol, good word!) too, so I completely understand!

I requested both pool view and near the lobby. We didn't get either :(. However, all the kid suites were booked, so it wasn't a big deal. We ended up being on the first floor right in front of where we could parked our car, so it was very convienant.

We found the parks to be very empty last week! Most stand-by lines were 10 minutes max. It was great!

I have requested to be near the pool and the lobby. I read somewhere that a pool view room is $20 more a night! I really hope that the parks will not be crowded when we go. I don't know how booked HIFS is for the week were going. Thanks so much for the info! I think I can finally rest easy with our decision to stay at HIFS!

mcfrugal:

We stayed at HIFS the week of 8/25. It's a great place to stay if you have children! We've stayed at moderate resorts at WDW and would chose HIFS over WDW anytime! The moderate rooms at Disney are SO SMALL!

We requested a ground floor, poolview kidsuite close to the lobby and got exacty that! We were in room 800, which is in the building right next to the lobby, just around the corner from the parking lot, and next to the family pool.

I don't know how old your children are, but a classic suite may be a better choice anyway. Our children 8, 11, and 13 fit comfortably in the bunk beds, but I think a separate room with two queen beds would work better if your children are older than ours.

I think you'll be very happy with the HIFS. I'm curious: you said you heard good and bad about HIFS, when I searched the DIS boards for information about HIFS, the only post I saw that was not good was that the dinner buffet was just mediocre. But we had lunch at Hollywood and Vine, the Teppan restaurant in EPCOT, and Cindy's and the HIFS's food was as good as EPOT and Hollywood and Vine.....actually we thought the lunch at Hollywood and Vine was AWFUL! Cindy's lunch was great, but we paid a lot more than what you would pay at HIFS. What negative comments did you hear about HIFS?

mcfrugal - They also told us a pool view was $20 more a night, which we were not willing to pay.

I agree with the other poster about becoming a priority club member (though it didn't help us any with our requests). You also get a 2:00 checkout, which is definitely a plus!

sandyrob: we were there at the same time as you! We also checked in 8/25 but were unable to get either of our requests. Maybe it's because of the time we checked in? Can I ask what time you arrived?

You are VERY close to the parks. You can see the EPCOT fireworks (OK well just the high ones) from the hotel! Friends of ours stayed at All Star's and we were closer to MK, Epcot and MGM and DTD (including waterparks) than they were. The road in was never busy. In the past we've stayed in Kissimmee, and this was much better. Be sure to get directions at the information desk before driving to the parks. Getting back from MK is a little tricky, as you leave the park on a different road than you went in. When you come out of MK, follow the signs for Epcot, and then you'll be on the right road. Also, we used the Marriot World Centre (its a huge hotel) as a landmark. Its across the road from HIFS. When you go to AK, its good to ask at the info desk for directions, because the is another road that is more direct than the one you use for the other parks.

One post stated "they didn't know what all the fuss about HIFS was about." They thought it was dark, small rooms and had outdated '70's furniture? They also stated that they would stay at a resort any day than stay at a family hotel - many more amenities and room at a resort. I believe they were comparing HIFS to Vistana Resorts. And then there are the usual comments about the not so great buffet. Overall, it still seems like a winner to me! Thanks for the suggestions. I have signed up for the Priority Points (right name?) and I maybe that will help with our room request.

THanks all!

Taylor1293: We checked in around 8:00 p.m. on the 26th. We took advantage of the 21-day advance reservation rate which, at the time, was $94.50 per night. We didn't pay anymore for poolside, and it wasn't until about a week after I made the reservation that my husband asked if I gave them his Priority Number. I had not, but called back and they added it to our reservations. I can't say enough about this place. When I was trying to decide if I should cancel our Port Orleans reservations (I was unhappy about the cancellation of EE and learning that the parks were closing a lot earlier than during the "summer," I called the HIFS toll-free number to ask a question about queen double kids' suites and kids' suites.....both were options on the Holiday Inn reservations web page and I didn't know the difference. Well, no one at the main Holiday Inn reservations number could help, and no one from the HIFS reservations number could help, so they transferred me to the web page designer at HIFS. In addition to answering my question, she told me that kids 12 and under could eat free any time at Pizza Hut and A&W, which helped me decided to stay there since our kids our such picky eaters, I thought we'd just do Pizza Hut for dinner each night. Well, someone on this board told me that kids eat free at Pizza Hut and A&W only during lunch time. When I called HIFS back to check on this, the reservations clerk confirmed this. I asked to speak to the web page designer, and she again told me that kids eat free in all the restaurants at all times, so long as at least one parent was purchasing a meal. I told her about the conflicting info., and when she checked it out she learned that she had given me incorrect information, but promised to "make it right for us." When we arrived in our room Monday night, there was a huge gift basket with all kinds of snacks for the kids, 3 coupons for medium pizzas at Pizza Hut and 3 coupons good for 10 tokens each at the game room, along with a letter of apology for misinforming us.

I didn't find the furnishings in our room at all outdated. In fact, I thought the parents' room was very tastefully decorated. The kids had the manatee room, and it was furnished very nicely too! I'd love to know in what room the guests that complained of outdated furnishings stayed. Our rooms were not at all dark: there was lighting over the kitchen area, a floor lamp by the swivel rocker, a lamp on the table beside the sofa, the bathroom was extrememly well lit, and both bedrooms had lighted ceiling fans and lamps on the bedside tables. I've never stayed at Vistana Resorts, so I can't say how they compare, but is the cost more than $94.50 per night??

Don't worry...you made a good choice, I think you'll be very happy there. Besides, how much time do you plan to spend in the room? We were out of there by 8:00 and didn't return until evening after the parks closed.

One more question: Did you make your reservation requests through the main Holiday Inn line or did you call HIFS to make requests? This might make a difference. I reserved the room on-line and then called the HIFS toll-free number to request, ground floor, poolside, theme choice, and close to the lobby.

Have a great trip!

Thanks Sandyrob! We checked in the morning before around 10:00, but couldn't get into our room until around 3:00. We probably passed each other at one time or another last week :) I didn't mind not getting poolside as much as not getting close to the lobby. It was somewhat of a long walk in the mornings and evenings for the buffet!

We loved our stay there too, and never even got a chance to take advantage of the kids eat free at lunch program. It sounds like they really made up their error to you!

We'll be returning next year for sure!

does anyone know how long it takes to get to the universal parks and sea world?
thank you,
lisa

I just booked HIFS for November. Is the pool area noisy at night? I'd like a room in a quiet area, but not too far from the kids' pool, restaurant, etc.?

chloesmommi: We were in room 800 right across from the pool area. I didn't really notice pool noise, but I think there was more traffic in general (people going to and from the pool); this is what I heard. I'm not sure what the pool hours will be in November, but the pool was open until midnight when we stayed the last week of August.

Have a great vacation!

Sandy

We were in an end room on the parking lot side. To get to the pool, we just came out of our room, turned left, and went thru the little alley way to the pool. I forget the room number, but if your looking at the main entrance, it was the first building to the right. So it was close to the main building and the pool, and we didnt pay any more for a pool view. Also very easy to and from the car. Another location that looked nice to me was overlooking the pond at the back/side. There is a lovely view there, it is close to the family pool and the main building, just a little further from the parking lot.

WE have stayed at HIFS twice and really liked it. We are taking my Niece and Nephew with us the fist week of October and can't wait. We normally stay on Disney Property, but love having an seperate room for the kids. Plus FREE breakfast Buffet for everyone!
