How can some people not get why they are overweight?

That's what I'm making for dinner tonight! Shrimp stir fry--I throw frozen shrimp, frozen Asian veggies, a little soy, a litle ginger, a little rice vinegar, a little garlic into my non-stick wok and wala! It takes about 15 minutes total, and cleanup is easy!

Muscle vs. fat

Get a pound of lean chicken breasts "muscle" and a pound of butter "fat". Look at the size difference. They weigh the same, of course, but the "muscle" appears tighter and smaller than the "fat". It's a cool demo from a diet class I did.

Meridia

I'd like to hear from our resident Dr. on this one, as I have a prescription for it, and am wondering if it is worth scrimping and saving (and maybe cancelling an ADR or two) to begin using it.

Health vs. weight

I'd like to hear from disneysteve on this one, too. As I mentioned before I have perfect blood work, low triglycerides, low cholestorol, no joint pain, no heart problems, etc. My only symptoms are extreme difficulty losing weight and being constantly cold, which is why I was sent for thyroid testing which came back normal. TSH (nonfasting) was 1.36 which is normal. Can I really be healthy with a BMI of 31? Do you think there could be an underlying cause of my weight that being overlooked? Someone mentioned a "resistant metabolism" and cited Atkins. (sorry can't remember who!) Is this a true medical condition? Is it treatable or is it the standard prescription of diet and exericise that I'm already following. I know diet and exercise can work, but I know it's limited on me. I eat 1600 -1700 calories a day and exercise 5 days a week. It takes me a very long amount of time to lose weight and once I get to 20-40 lbs lost it just stops- for weeks, for months and that is when I get discouraged. The only time I've broken past that is when I was anorexic (600 calories a day) or bulimic.

Cost of healthy foods

Yes, they can be more expensive than bulk high calorie, low nutrient foods, but as others have demonstrated, by using coupons, buying smart, growing your own and preparing items creatively, you can still eat healthy. Skim milk costs the same as whole. Whole wheat bread costs the same as white. And- if you eat less, you spend less. I started dividing my prepared meals before I ate, two servings for me and DBF now and two servings for lunches later so neither of us would be tempted to go back for another taste of something.

Caffeine and salt

Do these affect weight loss/gain? Has anyone experienced positive effects after cutting them out?

A lot of people brought up the fact that this thread is over a year old. I still think we're discussing a lot of relevant material and I appreciate the ideas and info others have shared with me. I think it is a really important topic and I'm glad others are still discussing it.

I was just trying to show that fast and convinient food can be had cheaply-as cheap (or cheaper) than home made and a lot more convenient. All you give up for that convenience is health.

A good example of this is Little Caesars pizza when they've got a large cheese pie for $5 special.

It costs me about the same amount of money to make the dough and sauce and add the cheese as it does to buy a cheese pie for $5.

The difference is that mine is all fresh and I know what went it it--no preservatives--not even in the sauce as I use POMI brand tomatoes that have no additives, only tomatoes in the box. If I used cheaper tomatoes the pie would cost a little less than Little Caesers.

It's quick and eay to make--the dough is done in the bread machine the night before, the sauce takes literally under ten minutes, and I feel it's a fairly healthy meal (I use skim mozzarella and no meat on it) unless you are counting carbs.

I don't count the fresh basil I put on mine, I keep a basil plant on my counter and clip off a few leaves when I need it. The plant cost me $3.99 to purchase six months ago, and I haven't bought basil since, so that was a great deal! :thumbsup2

Very low in fat and calories, in fact the fat count is almost non-existant. It IS high in cholesterol due to the shrimp--for an alternative you can use chicken breast cut up into cubes. Not including the rice I want to think it's about 275 calories and 3 grams of fat per serving.

I am sticking with the SHRIMP...my cholestrol is 179, it is DH @238 I have to watch BUT moderation in the amount of SHRIMP is all we will do!!! If DH could just get that down, I would be happy. It can be a daily struggle but we are managing.

OFF TO TARGET TO GET A WOK :thumbsup2 YIPPEE SKIPPEE

Meridia, Xenical, Adipex, etc. - I think all of these are useful short-term treatments mainly to get people motivated, get the first few pounds off and get moving in the right direction. But I think they are way over-prescribed and misused. You (general you) can't take Meridia and have a cheeseburger for lunch and expect to lose weight. You still need to do the healthy, lo-cal diet and exercise to see results and maintain weight loss.

Can you be overweight and healthy? Absolutely, just as you can be thin and sickly. Being overweight doesn't automatically make you sick. But it does increase your risk of developing certain conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, arthritis, certain cancers, etc. So while you may be in very good health now, which is great, you are statistically at higher risk of developing those things later in life if you remain overweight.

As was discussed earlier, if the only thyroid test you have had is a TSH, I would pursue that. There are other tests that could be checked by an endocrinologist.

As for the thread being a year old, I was surprised to see it surface again, but I don't think its a bad thing. The problem certainly hasn't gone away and there are plenty of DIS members who weren't here a year ago to share their views and experience. So thanks to all who are keeping it positive and informative instead of shooting the messenger. ;)

I didn't know shirmp was high in cholestrol! I personaly don't care, my level was 150, and that was before I lost 30 pounds, I bet it's even lower now. But DH is high and can't take meds for it (he gets every side effect in the book, and he's tried them all) so we can only lower through diet. Hmmm, now what am I going to do with the two bags of frozen shrimp I've got in the freezer!

YES, I was aware of that HIGH CHOLESTROL with Shrimp but moderation is the key.

Just looked it up 4 oz of SHRIMP: boiled/steamed 221 chol mgs.,
raw, 173 chol mgs., frozen cooked 130 chol mgs., this is all based on 4 oz which I am not even sure what that YIELDS. But it just gives you an idea.

Just two notes--you need to cook the veggies first--they take longer than the shrimp. You can use beef as well, I use London Broil when I use beef in this recipe. You need to put about a teaspoon of oil in the bottom of the wok--I use canola. Just enough to do a minimal little coat. If your wok isn't non-stick you need a bit more. And if you make the recipe with beef, cook that first then remove it and drain off the fat. Then cook your veggies and add in the beef just before you finish. Also, I use low-sodium soy sauce. I find regular to be too salty, that's my taste, but the low sodium soy is MUCH healthier for you, especially if your BP is at all elevated.
