How can I stay positive on my trip?

I'm with the poster above who said...."update your resume". It sounds like you're letting life happen to you....instead of you controlling your life. Gaining a sense of agency in a time of anticipated turbulence is one way to overcome emotional hurdles. You are in control of your destiny. Sure, your employer can have an outsized role in your destiny in the short run, but ultimately.....you are steering your ship.

So, get your work/professional ducks in a row and head to Disney with the confidence that you'll be able to land a new job if your current one is eliminated. This reality is likely coming for more Americans in the next year, and so it's a good idea to be prepared....Disney trip or not.

My husband has been at the same company for 35 years, it’s that time of year when the layoffs happen, 2 of his friends who started at the company when he did didn’t make the cut this year. He’s 56, sole income, we are set to retire when he’s 65 (due to healthcare costs). I think it’s common to have job anxiety this time of year.

I’ve already updated my resume and have applied to jobs.

Dunno, I have pushed through and went to WDW anyway when I was under incredible strain two different times and the upset ruined both trips for me, not my family but for me. I wanted to just escape my feelings but really, wherever you go there you are seems to be who I am.

I guess I'm in the camp of scaling back the extra days as others have said.
First, it permits your to go with less financial strain.
Second, when you tell work you can frame it in an employee positive way that makes you look like a trooper.

The only way I would cancel and reschedule is if you work with very jealous people. My old boss was mind numbingly petty and jealous so when I would do stuff it would give him an axe to grind. Think about why you are worried, maybe someone else traveled and there was gossip, if you think on it the reason will come to light.

It could go both ways. You could feel better. You could feel worse because this is supposedly the place to feel happy.

I am not a fan of your family guilt-tripping you "if you don't go, we don't go".

If you decide to go, have some firm rules and discuss this on forehand, like:
- it is okay to split up
- it is okay if you decide to stay in bed/at the hotel.
- it is okay to feel unhappy at the happy place.
- listen to your body/brain and determine when you can give in and when to push through.

Little trick: have a worry-moment. Pick a moment of the day every day for as long as necessary (you can also start now) where you fully give in to all your worries, write them done, cry, scream, let out all you are thinking about. This should help decrease your worry the rest of the day.
Wise words, well said 🙂

I agree with this, except the post says the parents will be paying for most of the trip. The OP is extending a few days & that is the portion they’re paying themselves. That’s why I suggested just cancelling the portion the OP is paying for. There’s probably no reason to cancel a trip when someone else is paying for it.
Depends. We don't know how prepared the OP is to weather a lay-off. We don't know how easy it would be for the OP to find another job; I mean, some jobs are easier to find than others.
I’ve already updated my resume and have applied to jobs.
Excellent. Being proactive is always the right answer.

Go and have fun. But, I wish op would answer the question many are asking: Would you be okay for a while financially if you got laid off? How bad would it be?

I'm purposely ignoring the question, because I can't answer it. I have no idea how long it would take me to find a new job if that did happen, could be a month, could be 6 months. Times are weird right now and no one can guarantee finding a new job. Financially, I am fine, but I also have no idea if something will come up in the next few months, whether that be medically or something breaking or whatever it may be. Unfortunately, I cannot say where I will be in a few months. Right now, all good. But layoffs aren't coming now, so anything can happen.
