Question:

I am getting points from a Member. I have received a confirmation letter in the mail, forwarded by the Member, with our name and address on it.

The Member asked that when I receive the confirmation, that I send her a check for payment in full of the points purchased. $605.00.

In passifying my own mind, I called Member Services who told me that the Member can cancel the reservation at any time.

What keeps her from cashing my check and then cancelling my reservation?

Nothing that's why trust is a huge part of renting points. Someone who posts on these boards only has a few posts...I would be more lery of then someone who has been around a while...

That said there have been very few 3 maybe instances of people getting ripped off in the 4+ years I've been part of these boards that I'm aware of... you just have to trust..make sure you have a contract, the persons full name address, phone number, email...

ZurgsWife is correct, it comes down to trust. Not much different to when I purchase items from somebody on ebay and I pay them immediately before receiving my item in the mail. I've never been burned fortunately, which says I think there are much more honest people in the world than dishonest.

Additionally, the types of people who own DVC are not your typical "kid" who tries to rip you off with a fake ebay item, etc. DVC owners are always adults (since they own real estate property), have above average income, and therefore probably more trustworthy as a whole.

DVC owners are not trying to rip you off, they're only trying to make back their yearly investment costs because they can't or don't want to use the points this year.

As a DVC member we also have to trust...........

We have made lots of reservations for people who changed their minds or were trying to get multiple owners to book for them simultaneously. We have called member services many times for people who opted not to follow through for various reasons. If plans don't work out the points are difficult to use (holding rules, no availability) and the DVC owners can loose out as well)

I recommend people talk on the phone and confirm the plans.
We have provided our ministers name and number to let them call for a reference if they want--

With all that said -- we have successfully worked out the plans with 4 familes and only have 41 extra points that we plan to rent before March 2006!

If you agreed to the terms, you should follow through. That is the price for getting the savings. I think the risk is minimal but not zero. Let us know what happens.

You are trusting the member to be good for their end of the agreement. If you have an agreement for a particular payment plan, then follow through with it.

If a DVC reservation is cancelled within 30 days of the check-in date the points go into a holding account. Not the best of circumstances for the owner but not the worst either. You might confirm your reservation with MS within the 30 day period if you want some additional piece of mind.

Nothing, except....
what everyone else has said, and; your assessment of the member from whom you're renting the points from. You should review the number of their posts, the lenght of time they've been on the DIS, and how they've dealt with you in the renting process.
That being said, if you've committed to rent them, and the member has forfilled their end of the understanding then you ethically have to complete the transaction. This is a part of you're "earning your ears". Remember too, that 99.9% of DVC members have spent large sums of money for their DVC memberships, and they've done so because they love Disney and embrace the general premise of Disney ideals.

Take a step beyound your "street smarts" and step into a place where people generally treat others as they wish to be treated. I seriously doubt you'll regret it! :)

Faith and Trust and a little Pixie Dust.

You either trust them or you don't. They either trust you or they don't. How do they know you won't trash the place?
