How busy is Disneyland at Christmas?

We are travelling from Australia to the USA west coast for three weeks this Christmas, and were hoping to spend Christmas Day and the following few days at Disneyland. However we have heard from a few people that Disneyland is extremely busy during Christmas week, and we should not go then.

Any advice? How busy is Disneyland at Christmas? How long in average would we have to wait in a queue? Would we be better to leave Disneyland until the end of our trip, around the 13th January? Would it be much quieter during this time?

Statistically, the days during the week of XMAS are among the busiest times of the year.
Crowds will be the biggest they ever get and lines will be hours long for any popular ride.

The time frame between Christmas and New Year's Day is arguably the busiest (or the second busiest) week of the entire year. Disneyland often closes when it reaches capacity -- and that can happen early in the day.

However, don't let that deter you. A lot of people elect to visit the parks during that time frame anyway, regardless of the crowds, and with the right planning and preparation they have a great time. In fact, some of our DIS'ers visit during that time frame every year.

This year is Disneyland's 60th anniversary, and that is a big question mark in terms of how it will affect crowds for the rest of the year. There are new events happening specifically for the 60th, and those new shows and events could increase crowds -- but I think they will be worth seeing, as they are not going to run indefinitely. They will end or have a reduced schedule at some point next year, I'm sure.

I think that if you love Christmas and the holiday season to begin with, you shouldn't miss an opportunity to see Disneyland Resort (including the 3 hotels) decked out in holiday splendor. It is truly amazing. It's a Small World Holiday and Haunted Mansion Holiday are worth the trip just on their own!

If you don't care too much about Christmas and just want to be in the parks when the crowds are lighter, then go during the January timeframe.

Be sure to join us in the Disneyland at Christmas/Holiday Season Superthread if you have time - http://www.disboards.com/threads/di...erthread-5-awaiting-details-for-2015.3358217/ - and feel free to jump in and ask us questions, and/or peruse the posts on page 1 of the thread to learn about holiday activities, decorations, dining, shopping, hotel fun, etc. We're there in that thread all year long, chatting about the holidays and discussing breaking news, rumors, speculation and so forth. So far we don't have any real news about this year's holiday season, so you will see a lot of references to last year's dates and events. I will update the info on page 1 as new details come in. (Also, please forgive any weird punctuation or tiny font that you may encounter, or links that don't seem to link to what they're supposed to link -- those quirks are the result of this website switching to a new hosting platform earlier this year, and a lot of formatting in a lot of threads across the entire site was compromised. It will take a while to clean up!)

Edited to add: I moved this thread to our main Disneyland trip planning forum and out of the Disneyland Community forum.

Consider your whole itinerary. There may be other things you want to do that will be closed between Christmas and New Years, whereas DLR will be open. If you weren't planning to stay in Anaheim for the DLR portion, maybe you want to go on Christmas and then return to use the rest of your days after the 1st. You have 13 days from first use to use a multiday ticket, it doesn't have to be consecutive days.

I went Christmas day last year and it was the busiest I have ever seen the place. It was very stressful at times. I do not recommend going during Christmas time if you can avoid it. If you do go you will need to reduce your expectations on what you want to accomplish throughout your day.
