I have never been to WDW. How big is each park. How many days should I reserve for each. With a break in the middle of the day or without a break. :thumbsup2 Thanks. I be there the end of August. :cool1:

MK = 105 acres
MGM / Disney Studios = 110 acres
Epcot = 225 acres
AK = 500 acres

As you can see there is a tremendous amount of walking on a WDW vacation - so be forewarned - bring comfortable, broken in shoes.
To answer your other ?'s like how many days for each park and if you should take a break or not depends largely on whether or not you are traveling with kids IMO.
* But since I see you plan to visit in August, I would have to say plan to take a break from the heat in the early afternoon regaurdless. Either go back to the pool for dip or pop into one of the TS resturants and have a leisurley lunch in the AC to recharge.

Great information ImagineEar.

I definately agree with taking an afternoon break. If you can get up and moving you'll do 3x's as much in the morning as you will in the afternoon.
If you have children I would suggest 2 days at the Magic Kingdom and 1 day at each of the other parks. If you have a hopper pass you might finish with Animal Kingdom early and can have an evening to redo any favorites.
After you choose your dates I'm sure you can get lots more advise here on things to make your trip smooth. Tips like avoid parks that have extra magic hours as they will be more crowded and how to make the most of fast pass.

As a first timer, you're probably going to want to try nearly everything at least once. I'm going to assume you have kids.
2 for magic Kingdom
2 for Epcot
1 for MGM
1 for AK.
1 extra in case things go awry and you just don't cover one like you wanted to or to spend an extra day in the park of your choice.
Total of 7.

On our first trip we did
2 in mk. We covered everything with some time to spare.
2 in Epcot. We covered everything but we didn't do all that much looking in the shops and stuff in Germany, China, Italy, or Japan. And we skipped the American show. Toward the end, I was carrying the kids and hurrying to get to every country so they could get their rewards (which were goofy prints.) When he got em all, the CM got up and made a big announcement and everyone clapped. But if you don't linger too long in the shops you can cover it.
1 in MGM. We had to make choices here. The show times don't allign all that well and you'll have to choose.
1 in AK. If you skip Rafiki's planet watch, you can cover all the rest of this one fairly easily. We missed a show and didn't have all that much time to enjoy Dinoland. Rafiki's was good. They were doing surgery on Timon (Ok it was just a meerkat.) But it's very time consuming and you don't realize you're consuming it. 5 minutes to wait for the train, 5 minutes to ride the train, 15 minutes to go to all the exhibits and see demonstrations on the walking trail to the building. 5 minutes to grab a snack at a diabolically well positioned snack cart. About an hour at the building (including watching the surgery.) 10 minutes at the petting zoo, 5 minutes to walk back to the train, 5 minutes to wait for it, 5 minutes to ride it back. We 2 hours there and didn't realize it. We missed a couple things we really wanted to do because of it. And note they don't always have a cool surgery to do. So you may get there and they're doing nothing.
1 at Typhoon Lagoon
1 doing nothing. We went to the parks 4 straight days. We found we needed a break. When we went, we had a nice couple next to us that had been there 4 days before we got there. He said about after the 3rd day of tromping around, your legs just get numb. We joked about it all stay. So do take your rest intervals.
We had a 7th day in the parks on our ticket. I would suggest you do that too. We didn't quite cover AK or MGM, but we elected to go to the MK again and catch what we missed the next time. They weren't really worth an extra day and it really wasn't worth the price to add hopping. to finish up parts of both that we missed. Fantasmic almost got rained out when we went. Had it been rained out, we'd probably have gone to MGM that last day to catch it instead of the MK.

The parks are big. Epcot is huge. Tons of space between buildings and rides. The park maps do not do it justice. AK is even bigger, but much of that is taken by the Safari (which you ride in a vehicle) and the Planet watch (which is partial walking, partial train, plus the animal habitats when they bring em in each evening you don't see. So imo, there wasn't quite as much walking to do there as at Epcot.

MGM isn't too big. It's a long way from the Fantasmic end to the Stunt show end, but most of the park is fairly compact relative to the others imo.

As far as walking goes, here's my advice. Start walking now. It's a ton more than you think. About a month before you go, buy two new pairs of comfortable walking or running shoes. Don't by the cheap Walmart shoes. Get some good ones. Make sure the heel does not slip. Break each in for about 1 or two walks. Then put them away until your trip. Even if you don't get the shoes wet, alternate them each day. Give the other pair a chance to air out. After your trip, you can wear them as normal. But I always alternate mine now. I was surprised at how much better my feet feel all the time just alternating pairs of shoes.
It will save you blisters, it will save you pain. Carry blister pads or moleskin, just in case. We didn't need it.

I definitely agree with Cannot_Wait_4Disney about skipping Rafiki's Planet Watch in AK! Our family FEELS IT IS A BIG WASTE OF TIME!!! and once hey have you back there it's like you are trapped - b/c the only way in or out is by that very very slow train which by the way is excessively hot to sit in and has no air movement - even when moving :confused3 !!!!!!!!

The AK is the Hottest park to visit anyway, due to all the large, moist vegitation that blocks any air from circulating effeciently and traps humidity. Keep this in mind since you are going in August and be sure to get there first thing in the Morning, by afternoon the heat will be killer. :wave2:

When we went we did not have all the time that other people seem to have. We spent one day at each park. But then we also aren't big on riding roller coasters, so you may want to take that into consideration while reading this. One full day each at MK and Epcot was enough to get it all in, but they were very long days. We didn't need a full day at animal kingdom, not so much to do, we did like seeing the animals though. We also didn't need a full day at MGM, although there was a lot more to do than at AK. We also went during spring break and the parks were packed, yet with only 4 days at the parks we got to do everything we wanted. We planned ahead, knew the rides and things we absolutely wanted to see and for character breakfasts made reservations. We also spent one extra day at NASA (Cape Canavral) which was a nice break. We planned our days in the parks, first day at MK, second at AK, third at NASA, fourth at Epcot, fifth at MGM. This was a good plan, because it broke up the really long days (with a lot of walking) with days that were more leisurely.
The biggest factor is whether you have kids and how old they are. My daughter was 7, and I did not hear any complaints about the pace of the trip.

Considering that this is your first time you are probably going to want to see as much as possible. And there is a ton to see especially with four theme parks. I would definitely recommend taking a break in the afternoons. I am currently attending school in Florida and in the end of August it is so hot. The humidity is just brutal. I personally was surpirsed how bad it actually was. Also it tends to rain every night without fail around seven for a half hour so be aware of that.

That being said I would recommend two days for the Magic Kingdom. It is a fairly big part with tons of attractions. Being in the middle of the summer I am sure the lines will be longer so you will get to see less. I recommend getting there early in the morning, breaking around lunch and then going back in the afternoon around dinner time. If you don't mind missing parades that would be a good time to go on some of the more popular rides. Another good time is at night when everyone is getting a spot for the fireworks.

Ecopt is another two dayer with a break. That park you can easily divide into two sides. The first could be in the morning covering all the attractions over in Future World since world showcase doesn't open until 11 anyways. Then after a break in the afternoon head over to worldshowcase and explore all the countries. This is personally my favorite part. You can also eat at one of them to get the true experience and no matter where you are you can see the fireworks display.

MGM you can do in one day. You just need to know what you want to see and what really isn't that important this time. Riding the attractions really isn't is a problem it is more with the shows. If you want to see the new car stunt show, I recommend you get there early. It starts right on time whether everyone is seated or not. We were halfway up the stairs and the show started. And remember that it is only shown a few times a day so don't forget to watch you time.

Animal Kingdom can easiy be done in a day. Just go in the morning and stay a little longer maybe through lunchtime and you should have no problem seeing almost everything.

I would also highly recommend just a day at the pool or a trip to the water parks. You will be surpirse how tired you are by day three. As my mom says sometimes after a WDW vacation you need a vacation from your vacation because you never get a moment to relax. Hope you enjoy your very first trip.

Yes I have three kids, 3,4, and 9. It's our first trip. Would you suggest that we go during a cooler month like November so we can spend the day at the park? We can go in the summer another year to fit swimming activites into the day.

MK - 107 acres guest area, 232 total with support facilities
Epcot - 250 acres
MGM - 135 acres
DAK - 500. KS alone is 110 acres

There are pros and cons to all times of the year. We go in the summer and have been in Jan-Feb as well. The parks are open longer in the summer which allows for that mid-day break that many like.

If you are from an area that gets very hot in the summer, it won't bother you nearly as much as people who are from a colder climate. We carry a bag with frozen water bottles, a ziploc with ice/washcloths, misty mates, etc. Start out early in the morning. When it gets to be crowded at 11-12pm hop back to the resort and have lunch/nap/swim. Go back in the evening when it is cooler.

If you are thinking of Nov. the week of Thanksgiving can be just as crowded as summer.

As far as swimming goes, you can swim pretty much all year. We have been in the pool in Feb! My SIL swam with her family every day of their Thanksgiving trip.

I would also recommend having a plan. Scope out the attractions that you/your kids definitely want to experience. Find out which ones are prone to have the longest line and start with that attraction first thing in the morning, then go to the next one that has a tendency toward a long line and so on.

Learn, live and use the FastPass!

I recommend the Unofficial Guide. It's touring plans are very good. I would use them as a framework, tossing out any attractions that I don't want to see and follow along with the rest.

My wife and I were there in 2001 and will go back next month for our 5th anniversary. We are both early risers so we left early and then returned to our resort around 2 PM for a quick shower and a nap. We were then completely refressed and ready for a big afternoon and evening of fun!

Have FUN!

I noticed that you are going @ the end of August....hope you are all planning on doing the "free meal deal" that comes out AUG.13th. !!!! With that said and having been in August 2x before ,I would definitely do a "Park Hopper" Pass and split most of your days with the afternoons (3-6pm)resting in your air-conditioned room or by the pool!!! You will never see it all in one trip ,or even 20 for that matter ,but I'd say 6-7 days in the park is about what you need to have a "Magical Vacation" Have fun planning!!!! :thumbsup2

Another thing to add, as the other posters said... use your FASTPASS to it's full extent . It's a big time saver! :cool1:
