How big are the free lockers?

We were hoping to go without bags. However, I am sure the kids will have wands and those have to go up right? Are the free lockers big enough for wands? Big enough for a loungefly bag? We were just all going to wear running belts and make it easy, but I’m not sure that works.
Thanks!

You'll be hard pressed to get a Loungefly bag in there. Probably too thick. They do have larger lockers you can get for $2.

I haven't tried, but I think a wand would fit.

Remember you can each get a locker if you need more space. Just probably won't help with the bag unless you're ok with squishing it.

That is if you can get the cast member to let more than one person in your party in. Last time I was there, there was 4 of house and 2 of us would always try to go in be stopped and told only 1.

They really want that $2 every time you ride if you bring in more than a clutch.

They measure 14 in x 5.5 in x 16.9 inches to be exact and look like the below with things stuffed into it.

My son was able to fit a Ghostbusters Loungefly backpack in the free lockers. It was a tight fit that wouldn't have been so bad if Stay Puff's hat wasn't more like an extra piece of material. He was concerned about it ripping while pulling the bag back out

Wands fit but the boxes can be tricky. Keep the map and send the empty boxes for later pick up at your hotel (if onsite) or the front of the park.

Yes, if you've just purchased wands, the boxes would be an issue. We always leave the boxes in the hotel and bring the wands in a drawstring backpack.

I used to travel with a laptop backpack and was able to, with some effort, smush it into the free locker. It was a tight fit and required some tugging side to side to get it back out.

The last few trips, I changed over to an Osprey Talon 11 pack. It easily fits along with our two Coke Freestyle mugs and whatever else we have that isn't already in the backpack (typically 2 pairs of sunglasses, phones, wallet, wand (sans box))

Just stand a bit further apart and pretend you don't know each other - that's what we've done in the past. They don't run a DNA sample ;)

Do the lockers work with your park ticket? What if you handed off multiple tickets and stuff to the locker runner? They mostly are trying to avoid the locker area getting super congested. Before they stopped the whole group going in it was insane. Like 6 people all crowded around to watch one person put a backpack in the locker.

Yes, I believe they work with any bar code. We’ve used day passes, EPs, APs.

We’ve had 4 bags between 6 people. For busy rides, we had 2 people collect the bags and get a pay locker. Stuff as much in there as we can (2-3) bags, then get free lockers for the rest. Hagrids, Gringotts and Hulk (not many small lockers at Hulk, we don’t want to take up too many) are the two we did that at the most often.

For other rides, 2 of us would collect the bags and use up to 2 different bar codes each. If I remember correctly, after some practice, we could get away with using only 2 of the free lockers byTetris-ing 2 bags in each locker.

We were told one person per party in the area when it was really congested. But honestly, they don't know who is with which party. 2 of us just went in separately.

Our backpack would fit, just not with my DSLR in it. So I took it out and put it in its own locker (after paying $2 several times that morning for the larger locker, we decided there had to be a better way).

I don't think it was about the $2 lockers. It really was just because there were too many people in there to even move around or get to a machine.

If you’re bag is just holding your “just in case” stuff, rent a locker at the front of the park and carry essentials with you. You can easily access the paid locker if you run really need something from it burn you won’t have to carry it around all day and deal with lockers.

Can someone point me to a list of which rides have lockers and which ones have metal detectors? I want a better plan for our next trip. We were stuck in Hagrid's line for over an hour waiting for rain to pass and at least half of the people in there had phones with them. I sure would have welcomed a distraction at that point.

In IOA, the Hulk and Velocicoaster have metal detectors so you can't take anything on the ride other than a lanyard which you can tuck into your shirt while riding. To note, the lockers that you would have to use at Velocicoaster are near the end of the queue so you will have all of your belongings with you until almost the end of the queue (as opposed to not being able to enter the queue with anything).

In USF only Rip Ride Rockit has metal detectors where you can't take anything on the ride with you other than your lanyard.

Edit: Almost all other rides have lockers to stow stuff in (the small ones are free) other than the water rides in IOA (Jurassic River Adventure, Dudley Do Right's and Popeyes) which have lockers, but not free ones.

On the rides without metal detectors (like Hagrids), I assume you can only have a phone (or whatever) if it's zipped into a pocket, or at least not showing when you board? I'm considering a lanyard pouch for my phone I can put under my clothes on some rides.

Pretty much all other rides (as far as I know) that have lockers, but not metal detectors allow "fanny packs" to be worn on the rides provided they have a 3 prong clasp to fasten them. Hagrid's for sure allows this. Also Forbidden Journey even allows you to keep a cross body strap purse on while your ride (my wife went to put her purse in the locker at FJ and they told her to keep in on herself).

I wear cargo shorts (i.e. lots of pockets) and every ride I was on (other than the metal detector rides) I kept them full with my phone, wallet etc.

Anything fit into a pocket can ride, excluding the 3 metal detector coasters. Does not need to be zippered or secured, but it should be secure enough not to fall out. For some (Hagrids...) you want things more secure than others (MiB).
