How bad is construction at Disneyland hotel?

Hi,
DH were married at the DL hotel 15 years ago, and we are thinking about visiting in mid July for our anniversary. I'm worried about all of the construction going on at the hotel. I don't want to spend all of that money, only to find out that the kids won't be able to swim in the pool, etc. How bad is the construction?

In July it should look very good. The Peter Pan Pool is still untouched while the rest of the grounds get changed/updated. All of that is planned to be done in the next couple months. The buildings around the inner courtyard should be done. While there may still be work going on inside the tower with the lobby. If you can book a standard room, the old ones, right now, there won't be any left very soon, and you will get a preffered room, the newly dones ones.

Thanks. That's good to know. I guess we can book a room only reservation, and if it seems like construction will be a problem as we get closer, we can always cancel and stay someplace else.

My mom and daughter are there now and say it is awful. They are checking out early because of the condition of the hotel and they knew there was construction going on, they just didn't understand where and how bad until they got there. Their room is in the tower in front of where the waterfalls used to be and mom says it is so hard to get to the front desk for things she is walking to the GCH and dealing with the concierge and front desk there. The interior courtyard of the hotel is nothing but construction walls, no foliage, no plants, nothing. Yes the pool is technically open but mom said you'd have to be crazy to swim there. They have been going to the GCH to do that as well.

I'd hold off staying there if you plan to spend any time at the hotel or in your room other than to sleep. It's a huge mess.

I can say this is exagerated. And I would base this as good planning information for a trip in the summer.

Why did your mom say you'd be crazy to swim there? Is it really noisy or dirty by the pool?

Boy, it sounds like a mess right now. But I'm still thinking of staying there. I'd hope by July that things would be a little better.

Does anyone have photos? About to book for July so tossing up which hotel. A picture would really help:)

Mom said the Neverland pool is open, but is surrounded by construction. It was a combo of noise and not being nice to look at or relaxing. Everything is surrounded by those wood construction fences Disney uses. I can assure you her report is not an exaggeration. I warned her about the construction and she still wanted to stay there. She really wanted the DLH experience to go well. Hopefully LisainCalifornia or others can chime in to support my earlier post.

I'm fuzzy on the details for completion dates, but just responded how it is NOW. Not sure how it will be in July, so I guess I'm not much help!

Thanks for the info. If anyone has more, please feel free to share. We are staying one night, just so the kids can see where we got married. For the most part, we will be hanging out at the parks though. I bet we won't even recognize the hotel now.

Since we are going late June and staying at the DLH, I've been keeping a close eye on the property rennovation. Disney Geek has the most recent pictures (April 15) I've been able to find starting on page 78 of his photo album.

I've also heard that the new onsite restaurant will be open in June and I believe the second pool (the one with the monorail) will be open then too. If the restaurant is open, I'm sure the grounds will be in better shape as well, since I don't think they want people walking through dirt to get to it.

Or maybe it's just wishful thinking!

We didn't have a problem swimming in the Neverland pool in January and the construction was at least as bad then as it is now. And, fwiw, the front desk is in the furthest tower from where the woman's mom is staying, and it always has been and it always will be. That won't change. What will change is that by the summer the courtyard should be open (less or very little construction). In the fall the Neverland pool will be walled off for refurb, but I would guess that'll be less of an issue than now, since it's a majority of the courtyard under construction now and the Neverland pool is maybe 1/3 the size of that.

When is the construction supposed to be finished?

As Dahlia mentioned, phase one of the pool, the new pool bar and food for the Summer. Neverland pool will be worked on in the Fall, so they can pause construction over the summer. The whole project old neverland pool, hotel rooms, lobbies, whatever for 2012. But I think more likely by the 2011Christmas Vacation period.

I think it was really bad, and I was there 4/6/11. I have pictures and video. Here they are:
Here was our "view":

and here is a video I took from the room:

The Neverland Pool was actually closed when we were there, but I couldn't have imagined going there. The noise and construction is just too massive. It may have been okay a few months ago, but certainly not now.

I have no doubt that the Disneyland Hotel will be WONDERFUL when it is done, but right now it is not a resort experience. If you are not paying to stay there, you may just not understand what I am talking about.

Here is a good analogy.

The Disneyland Hotel Grounds are a mess of construction, dirt, noisy trucks so don't plan to go there.

There is a huge tangle of steel and unfished concrete, so don't go to Carsland when it opens.

See how stupid it sounds. They are improving the place and the state it's in is not going to last forever.

I mentioned this little tidbit at the earlier in the thread. Right now(and the window is closing) you can't reserve an old room at the lower rate than the new room. But all the old rooms are dissapearing fast. There may in fact not be any to rent right now. So if you pay the low old room rate now, all they will have left when you arrive is the newly refurbished rooms. If you are planning to stay onsite you might want to take advatage of this loophole.

I'm going to have to mull this one over some more. Thanks for the picture links and video. That does give someone a good idea of what the resort is like at this time.

Too me it is only 1 night. The time will pass before anyone knows it and no one really knows how far along it will be. Stay at the GCH and walk up and see where you were married, not a bad stroll.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking too. Thanks.
