How bad can the "rocky" days be?

So what time of year are all of you reporting the worst seas? I see a lot of November and December sailings with these issues, we're going April 30th of next year - is that typically a rough time? Although... I know it can be rough at any time, I'm just speaking generally.

On our 1/04 Western cruise we had 20 foot swells leaving Cozumel and through the night, it was something. We couldn't even walk and the closet doors kept opening and closing all night. Everything was banging in our stateroom. The next day the seas calmed down to 15 to 17 foot swells and we had such a time walking. Of course this was our day scheduled for the brunch in Palos! We barely ate anything and I lost it once we got back to the stateroom! By the next day the seas were glass. I still loved being on the ship, just sat on our balcony and relaxed during the high seas.

DH and I were also on the 10/24/04 Wonder, for our honeymoon. The crew actually told us (and MANY others) that the stabilizers were not used. It became the talk of the ship actually. QUOTE]

Well, if it is true, it makes me very mad. That was a miserable night for me and my family. I was under the impression that the captain was doing the best he could to give us a smooth ride. It sure didn't feel like the stabilizers were out, but I was given to believe they were.

We were on the 12-27-03 NYE cruise and had 20 foot waves and gale force winds, crew said it was the roughest it had been in months.....yet I never saw anyone sick. The waiters stumbled a couple of times during dinner, but no big deal. The stabilizers make a big difference.
My first cruise was on a much smaller ship (The Mermoz) without stabilizers.....it was a 14 day cruise and it was much more noticable.

Ww were on the 4/24/04 Western and had smooth sailing. I had never been on a ship before and didn't feel any movement at all in port, but noticed later while leaving the show that it was like walking on the pontoon bridge at Tom Sawyer Island in WDW...but got used to it quickly. We had some nights where I was bumping into walls unexpectedly, but I don't think the swells were more than 10-12 feet. It was nice being rocked to sleep at night. Miss that.

I have an acquaintance who was on that spring break cruise and mentioned that it was very rough, with waves at 30 feet. She just shook her head and didn't say more. I went prepared with seabands. Our pediatrician didn't want the kids to have bonine, and I didn't want to give them Dramamine (due to sleepiness), so hoped for the best. In the end, none of us needed it. We felt the motion, but it was not unpleasant at all.

Hi, Goofyforlife (glad you got home safely) and CheapMom (sorry we didn't get to meet):

We asked someone in a uniform how high the seas were that last night. At one point, the TV was reporting Force 7 Gale winds and rough seas of 12-15 feet. Our servers estimated more like 15-20 feet, and the uniformed guy (I can't remember his name!) said probably around 22 feet! We went for a walk on deck after dinner (second seating) and then went back to our room on Deck 5. The waves were so high, and there was so much spray, that our verandah had puddles on it! I think the water came from the spray though, I don't think the waves were that high. Our tablemate at dinner had to go back to her room because she was sick.

We slept like babies, rocked by the waves. I did have a problem with rocking back and forth for the first two days back on land. It was a little tough to walk. A lot of people thought I was drunk (at 9 AM??)

We too were on that really rough March 20 eastern this past year. I am very prone to seasickness as is my husband. We both took the Bonine (starting 2 days before the cruise). I also wore the SeaBands, but my husband did not because they were too tight on the wrist. I did not get seasick, but myhusband did get sick.

While I did not get sick during those 30 ft waves/full gale winds, I sure did get very tired of the rocking and creeking movement/noise. I was grateful to get off of the ship. Quite honestly, I even got a little nervous in the night when the waves got so big. I look back at it now and wish I had gone up on the top deck, but I was such a chicken!

I remember my co-worker had a cruise given to her as a gift. It was for 9/8/03 and did not give the date a second thought-did not even know about hurricanes. I thought "she is NUTS going then". Her cruise was great, ocean was like glass. We do all the homework possible to avoid rough seas and BANG we get the 30 foot waves in March of all months. So much for trying to figure out the best dates.

It's obvious from these posts that rough weather can happen any time! But isn't it more likely in the winter months? We are booked on the 12-17-05 and I plan to have fun no matter what-but it would sure be easier WITHOUT the barf bags!
