How are you successful at selling on craigslist? It isn't working for me :(

I have listed many items on craigslist and am unable to sell any of them. I either never have any offers or am extremely low balled. It isn't even that I am looking to make a profit, I am just looking to get my money back and am offering people incredible values. It just seems that the people on there are greedy and pretty much want it for free.

What is it you're trying to sell? Collectibles? Used items?

Collectibles are selling low right now from what I hear. If you're selling used anything, expect to get maybe 25%-30% of the retail value.

Do you post pictures of your items? I hear that helps.

I obviously don't know what your selling or for how much but I am on craigslist everyday and have bought and sold. Speaking through my experience most people price their stuff way tooooo high. I know most have paid a lot for their things but usually not what they are worth now.

I think they need a discussion forum so people can discuss their stuff. It may make a difference. But most things are overpriced.

Right now I am selling a brand new in box power wheels lightning McQueen ride on car. I posted a link to the picture from the Disneystore which is where I bought it during the buy one get one free promo. I am selling it for the price I paid for it. I paid $299.50 for both cars plus tax of about $26 and shipping charges of $54. So both cars come out to be $189.75 each and I am asking for $190. I thought this was beyond reasonable and an amazing deal for someone because the lowest price I found the car for was $250 with tax. But I get offers from $150 and under. Then I am selling 2 adult Universal Studios & Islands of Adventure tickets 3 day park to park for $300. We have had them for our last trip but weren't able to use them and we are going in May but won't be able to use them either. They sell at the gate for $170 plus tax. I am selling them for the price I paid but still that isn't good enough because I get told that is too much and they want them for $100! Then I am selling a $950 new in box Waterford prestige Alana lavender pitcher for $400. I get offers for like $155! It sells for $950! I just don't understand.

Although these all seem like bargains when you look at the original price, I believe you are expecting to get too much out of them and therefore have them priced too high. Craigslist is like an online yard sale and people generally expect yard sale prices. The PP who said you can expect 25-30% of retail value is about right I think.

At the Disney Store online the Lightning McQueen Ride On Vehicles are buy one get one free so that makes them $150 plus shipping. People are very Leary of buying park tickets off craigslist - if I was going to pay face value for them I would buy them direct. You can buy 3 day hopper Tix to Universal/IOA for $140 (no tax) at Costco. I bought ours just this past weekend. As a previous poster said you can almost never sell collectibles for even half of what they are worth on Craigslist, especially right now. Good luck - I hope you can sell at least a couple of your items :)

You are not a store. You don't accept returns you can't expect to get what you paid for anything. The person is taking a risk buying from you... Will the car even work? Are the tickets good. Is the pitcher a fake. They don't know you or if you are to be trusted your just some other person on Craigslist. I would offer 150 for the car tops because I can't return it or get any service if it fails in the first few months because I bought it from a person and not a store.

People on CL are looking for a bargain. While it may be valid to ask what you paid for an item, most CL buyers will not want to pay that. You have to consider that on CL, as a buyer, you are getting no guarantees that the item you are buying will actually be in good condition. There's no return option, so I think that makes buyers wary and more likely to ask for a discount. Some of these items might do better on ebay. I have sold extensively on both ebay and CL, and I've found if there's something I can package up and ship, I will usually get a better price on ebay than CL. I've sold a bunch of items recently on CL, but at a MUCH lower price than I originally asked. These were items that were all in good working condition, practically new equipment that was purchased a year or two ago, never used or only used once. I ended up having to sell for less than half what these items cost in a retail store. I tried to hold out for a higher price, but I finally just decided I'd rather have some cash and get these items out of my garage rather than hold out for months and months to get the price I want (if that's even possible).

IMO, your prices are too high. You'd probably do a lot better selling the items on Ebay. Although I really think you might have trouble selling those Universal tickets anywhere. You'd probably be better off maybe finding a friend going to US and selling them your tickets. Most people are leery of buying park tickets because there's no way to know if they are used or not.

I've never really had any luck with Craigslist either. I belong to a group of moms that created a Facebook page for just our towns moms. We gained 700 members and it started to get bombarded with some moms trying to sell things, cooking questions, etc. So we created more of our own FB pages for just us. One of them is our own garage sale (so to speak) and a lot of us have done very well selling our things there. Just a thought :)

Car - $150

Tickets - Maybe $125 if you are lucky

Waterford - put it on ebay with a $400 minimum price(buy it now) and see if you get an offer. You would be the least expensive one listed.....they are on stating at $472.

I agree. If it'snot too late, I'd take the offer of $150 on the car and consider offers above $125.

Tickets are very hard to sell because there is no way for the buyer to verify how many days are left and there are a lot fo scms out there.

The only items I put on Craigslist are items that are too big to ship. Everything else goes on eBay.

The car might sell better if you wait until the Christmas season.
You could put on the car listing that the price is FIRM. It would reduce the number of lower offers that you get. But you will have to compromise if you never get a full-price offer.

We sell on Craigslist, but I try to forget what I paid for an item and instead look at what other people are asking for similar items, and then price mine a little cheaper.

I agree with the others. I'd probably be thrilled to get $150 out of the ride-on car. And I would never buy tickets for a theme park from a stranger and I counsel my friends the same. You should either keep them for a future trip or try to sell them to a friend that trusts you and knows they are un-used.

Craigslist is more of the clear-the-clutter garage sale rather than a consignment sale. You aren't going to make back what you have invested in an item. When I'm listing something, I think "what am I willing to take for this to get it out of my way?"

As for the pitcher, I think you're in the wrong venue. You should try Ebay where people who are collectors will watch for things they want and actually know the value of an item. If I saw a pitcher on Craigslist for $400, even Waterford, I'd say to myself, "yeah, good luck with that." It's going to take a special buyer, not the general buyers like myself.

I agree that your prices are way too high. Expecting to get what you paid for something is unrealistic unless it's a high demand item.

The tickets are a very hard sell item. Why would someone take a risk on them? I could see it for a concert that is sold out, but anyone could just buy those tickets themselves from the vendor and save the risk.

While I agree that the OPs prices are a bit high - she does have a point about CL buyers trying to get things for practically free. My 13yo sold her barely used DS lite through my CL account. barely used, no scratches, hinges in great shape, had the power cord, the instruction manual and the box. GameStop sells them in this condition and worse for $90. DD threw in the car charger, a case, extra styluses, headphones, game cases and new screen protectors as a "package" for $75. We repeatedly got offers for $35 - $40. She held out and ended up selling for her asking price, plus sold some games to the same person. It was extremely frustrating though to know that you had priced fairly and deal with people being rude when you refuse their low ball offers.

On the other hand, sometimes you can be surprised. I just sold a Leapster 2 with case, wall charger and 1 game for $25. Haven't been able to sell the second one for that (it's pink - the green one sold)

OP - you may do better to include a picture of the car in the box at your house instead of the link to the store photo. When I see a store or stock photo instead of the actual item in hand, I'm always leery of the condition - even if it says new in box. I'm always afraid of a bait & switch and won't contact the seller on items like that.

You can check out Replacement.com for a current value of the vase. The will send you a "quote" price of what they will pay you for it.

It is local for me, but I have sold there before and made out pretty good. They are extremely fair. I had several pieces of silver flatware.....the spoons were worth $10 each, forks $2 each.

I hope you do well.

we've had some luck. I'm selling dd's old clothes in lots by size.
I've done one big lot. I've split the clothes into smaller lots like $10, $20 or if 2 lots are $10 each i say take both for $15. Clothes havent been selling. There are many people posting their clothes and they keep posting every 2 days or as soon as they can renew. Theres one lady that has over 50 plastic bins of clothes for boys, girls etc plus looks like new baby items. its more of a business for her and not like a typical seller thats trying to declutter and make a lil money. I've notice many repeat post so people arent buying .

The 2 lots i thought wouldnt sell were the first to go-lol! I was hoping that after Easter things will sell.

No one is going to pay you the same amount they can get it for from a store, or cover your tax and shipping charges, even for a brand new item. In that case they will get it from the store itself and be covered if there are any problems with the purchase. You should not expect to get what you paid for it, if there is no discount there will be no sale.

There is a big discount. I am asking $190. No way can you get that car brand new for that price in any store. And I even took everyone's advice and lowered the price to $175. In my opinion, CL'ers take advantage and if you can't afford the item then don't expect someone else to pay it out of their pocket and offer it to you for less. I would rather not sell it. I am not desperate for money thank God. Whenever I have bought on CL, I never low balled or demanded a price reduction. I simply paid the seller what they asked because I knew I was getting a bargain and am not greedy. No one should have to lose money because someone else deems themselves so worthy that someone else should help pay for their extravagances. IMO CL buyers are the scam artists.
