How are you handling your return?

Are people jealous she is buying new furniture? I don't get the reason for the hostility... She could have 5 kids like me plus pets and furniture and carpeting or other household items take a major wear and tear... Or she could just WANT it... Her money- her choice. How many people buy cars before their old ones no longer drive? Sheesh. It really isn't that outlandish of an expenditure and I'm happy she is able to buy it after working and paying her taxes all year.

We always get between $10k-$12k so I may buy some new clothes even though my current ones aren't threadbare. Will probably put a little in savings and invest the rest.

We never get more than about $300. So we will just be paying bills and a few more groceries for the month.

I've said it before on another thread, but due to the fluctuation of my income, I have no idea if I'm getting a refund. If I do get one, it will probably go toward, in this order:

Paying off any debt we have
Paying for our Disney trip
Pre-paying school tuition for the 2013-2014 year

It was not needed in her post. It is a hidden way to brag. When SW did not get the response she wanted she got mad.

Do not give out trivi details if you do not want a reply to them.

Not so hidden. Really, it felt that all the details were there as brags (though I don't get the point about the chimney being outside - aren't all chimneys outside?).

I was trying not to get points. ;)

Stone is superior to just brick!! Atleast in a certain posters eyes! ;)

I don't think anyone is jealous about the furniture. She stated what she was buying with her money, and it was responded with a question. I don't see what the problem is here :confused3

We are getting more back than usual because we got to claim the medical deduction this year (ouch) DS and DH both had surgeries, DD had a broken wrist, DS had pneumonia twice and other DS was in a serious car accident.

Of course we are taking the refund and paying even more medical bills with it

I'm getting a nice big refund this year (but have $0 federal withholding every week - single, house, kids... lol) so I'm going to get out from under a few bills. Credit cards are getting paid off, and I'm still deciding if I should pay off my car or the medical bill....

I think the car would be a smarter choice, since the hospital bill is interest free, but I REALLY hate the monthly reminder of being sick last June :sad1:

Federal refund is estimated to be deposited tomorrow, fingers crossed!!

BTW: I don't really care WHY the pp is buying new furniture (I am a bit jealous LOL) but I certainly think it's a fair question - like I wouldn't be offended if someone asked me what kind of car I drive, because I mentioned it (CVR if you care :rotfl:)

I am getting back about some money thanks to some nice deductions and the fact that I worked part time and made under a certain amount of money for the year.

We are buying a new stove and then putting the rest away into savings for a rainy day.

We typically get a $10,000-$20,000 refund each year (we still have $13,000 from last year). We just prefer a lump sum payout. But, we don't get new furniture every 5 years. (Such a disposable mentality...furniture should last at least 2-3 times that long! Not only is that not a very friendly environmental way to think, but really? Keep your furniture for an extra year or two and donate your "excess" money to a charity!). Sometimes this world and the people in it scare me!

How do you get back $10k to $20 a year in taxes? What tax bracket are you in and what are your write offs. I have never heard of people getting back that kind of money. Thanks for any tips you can give us, because I must be missing something.

We're using our return to repair our backyard fence. We're getting a dog this summer, so we have to make sure the little guy can't squeeze under any of the broken boards to the neighbor's yard!

Received federal refund of $4620
Pay off the remainder of a hospital bill $750.
Put about 2K in savings for either the new car fund or home repairs
May buy a new computer or ipod
Will have to pay a few hundred in state taxes
Not sure what else

I'm new at this so I don't know if I used the "quote" function properly but I, too, never understood such large refunds. A friend of mine says she gets about $13,000 back every year. They don't make as much as us (close) and are both union electricians. Maybe they pay a ton of dues and fees to the union which are deductible - just a guess.

We'll probably get back around $5,000. Using it to buy my 17 year old a used car so we can stop driving her everywhere.

I *should* be getting about $3k (haven't filed yet since I'm still waiting on my investment accounts).

I plan on putting this into my IRA since I haven't made last year's contribution yet... :thumbsup2

My husband has a high paying job,and due to that, has a lot taken out of his pay checks.
We have a financial advisor who guides us in making smart choices with our finances, as well as a company that does our taxes each year.
Also, our refund isn't just solely from what was taken out of pay checks -- there are several different things/ reasons ... we also own shares and stock.

ARG! Please do NOT feel like you have to justify or explain ANYTHING here on the DIS! Your life is your life. You weren't even seeking an opinion, so people need to mind their own business.

Heck, if I could replace my furniture every 5 years, I'd be one happy camper! My tastes change often, lol. Unfortunately, any extra money I get goes towards savings and/or retirement since I started late in life.

When you are a business owner it is sometimes difficult to predict. Two years ago our combined refund was over $25,000. Last year $1,000 though we earned more. This year we are likely to pay.
