How are you getting your dress there?

We put my dress in a regular carry on bag (folded tightly) and took it on the plane. Carolyn Allen's came and steamed out any wrinkles.

If I wasn't able to fit it in the carry on bag, I planned to ship it to Carolyn Allen's in advance.

UK Brides-I ordered my box through www.dressinabox.co.uk and it arrived within 2 days! They were really speedy and the box is beautiful!

They also have a list on the website of which size box is required for the different airlines.
I had a message from Virgin this morning saying I was aloud an additional hand luggage bag as well as my box for hand luggage which was a huge weight off the shoulders!

I'm taking mine on the plane as a carry on. When I made our flight reservations I asked about it, because I was a bit worried that I would have to hold it from Halifax to Orlando! The woman assured me that not only would it definitely go in an overhead compartment, but that the flight attendants would try to get it in its own overhead bin. If that wasn't possible, she said they'd rearrange things so that my dress would be able to lay over small bags in its garment bag.

After she said all that she actually said "You're our customer, we want to make your flight as smooth as possible for you."

I was unaware that customer service like that existed anymore lol. :worship:

I am from Halifax also. When are you getting married? I will leaving Christmas Day, but we drive down so will be arriving on the 27th late afternoon. So my dress will be in the back seat all by itself as my daughter is flying with my family on the 29th. I will also be bringing some of the girls dresses along with other valuables that we don't want lost or broken. :earsboy:

Yes, first class offers an area to hang stuff up. My sister also had a dsetination wedding and when she caleld the airline to ask what to do with her dress, they told her that if on that day, there was room in first class to hang it, she could, but that they couldn't guarentee it. She ended up just putting it in a suitcase as her carry-on (her dress was really simple). I looked into upgrading to first class as well, I figured it would be a nice treat, but the flights were WAY more expensive than what I was thinking! :scared1:

In some of the smaller planes, the first class coat hooks are behind the last row of first class seats. We have upgraded a couple times, using frequent flier miles, and my DF reminded me that they did hang a wedding dress behind us once, when we flew from Minneapolis to Chicago. That was a Delta flight.

I got married on Maui. I carried my dress on the plane. The Attendents were very happy to hang it near the front of the plane for me.

I followed Carrie's advice and used FedEx and Carolyn Allen's. I had what I liked to call Box Watch 2010 going. I was so incredibly nervous shipping it b/c I've had so many things lost or delayed in transit. Carolyn Allen's was great. They called me as soon as it arrived there so I knew they had it. Then they confirmed the drop off/steaming date. They also called the night before to confirm again! A+ for them! I also shipped 2 boxes to the Contemporary. They held them for me at the business center until we got there. It was nice b/c our flight got in a tad late and had to run to make our ADR so we weren't able to pick up the 2 thirty five pound boxes until the next day. The Contemporary was totally fine with that! I was so happy I followed Carrie's advice! :thumbsup2 Thanks Lurkyloo!

one more thing. while most airlines are very accommodating. Not all are and I have heard stories of people needing to check it at the gate b/c the attendants wouldn't let it on because it was too big. Also, there may be several people who ask to put something in the closet and there is no space. I remember one bride said there were 2 other brides on her flight and they all wanted their dress in the space that wasn't very big to begin with. Soooooooo.... if you plan on getting it steamed anyway... I reccommend shipping to Carolyn Allen's. :)

My seamstress made me nervous about shipping it, so I carried it onto the plane. I bought a white sheet and wrapped up my dress and stuffed it in my carry-on. It was much easier than a box since my dress was pretty heavy and I could just roll it along. I was having it steamed anyway but it really wasn't even that wrinkled when we got there.

I refused to ship it. I was way too nervous especially since Fed Ex has lost packages of mine for work that had confidenital legal documents in it. Imagine if that was my wedding dress. :scared1: I had my bridal salon pack it up in a box that was airplane carryon regulation size (just got the measurements from the airlines website which was Jetblue and they were very accomidating) and carried with it me the whole way from JFK to the GF. Since I was getting it steamed by Carolyn Allen the morning of my wedding anyway I did not mind if it got wrinkled. The salon just put it in the dress bag in a standard brown box and attached a handle. It was real easy to carry through JFK and MCO. I just placed my dress in the overhead directly above my seat. Once I got to the GF, I hung it in the bag in my closet. DH would never peak so I was not concerned he would see it. Talk to your salon about this option.

My daughter was married in Disney last October. The airline told us that they may or may not have room for it as a carry on. I had a visual of lots of carry on pcs of luggage being stuffed in an overhead with a dress. My daughter flew down with her dessert party gown, I took the ball gown for the ceremony. There is no way I was letting that dress out of my sight. I bought a ticket next to me for the dress. When I walked on the plane the flight attendant said, "Uh, not sure if we will have room for that today." No, worries it had it's own seat. Funny thing is because it was so long, I was required to give the dress the window seat as I was told I had to keep the floor in front of the seats and the aisle completely clear of the dress bag.:thumbsup2
Got from WI to Detroit, and guess what? No flight to Orlando anymore, had to fly the next day. Luckily, I was going 2 days before the wedding. I made the airline get me a hotel room with 2 queen beds so I could spread the dress out on the bed. I am so grateful that the airline screw up didn't have that dress sitting in either Orlando or Detroit overnight.
I also reserved a seat for the dress on Magical Express! Keep in mind that maybe you only need a 1 way ticket because once the wedding was done, it wouldn't be such a crisis to have the dress "misplaced" or delayed. We had friends who drove to FL take it home for us.

I'm glad to hear this isn't an issue because this is what I want to do. I wasn't sure if this was ok. I don't mind if I have to put it in the window seat, I just want it with me.

This is a great idea, but unfortuately when coming from the UK it is a luxury most of us cannot afford as it costs about £450.00 ($675.00), give or take, for a seat on the areoplane. I am afraid I will just have to take my chances on it going in a box and take it as hand-luggage!!!

Tinkerbell-I will let you know how I get on with Virgin and my now rather heavy dress box now that the dress is in it! It's really heavy!!!

Great- thank you. It will be interesting to see how you get on!!
