How are you getting your dress there?

Hello,

How is everyone getting their dress to florida? I was watching an airline reality show a while back and a womans wedding gown was lost by the airline. This is making me sooooo nervous. Davids bridal said they will pack my suitcase for me with my dress in it but I'm sure its going to be over the carry on size.

Any suggestions?

I shoved mine in its manufacturer's box and shipped it to Carolyn Allen's FedEx for less than $25. Then they stored it and brought it to me on the wedding day when they came to my dress-steaming appointment. They picked it up the next day and repacked it and shipped it back to my house—all for $15 on top of the price of steaming (plus return shipping of $30).

If you're planning to get the dress steamed or pressed before the wedding day, it doesn't matter how tightly you pack it into a box, and it feels SO nice not to have to hassle with taking it on the plane! :thumbsup2

I did this too based on Lurkloo's advice and it worked like a charm :thumbsup2Carol Allens service was superb.

What is Carolyn Allen's? I am doing mine on disney cruise line and they are steaming the dress for me the night before the wedding and Davids bridal is steaming it before that after my fnal fitting. I'm just worried about it being out of my hands because I have placed alot of lost and damaged claims at work and know how much care is not taken when shipping sometimes.

I don't have a manufacturer's box...hmmm...should I find a second box to double box it??? Where do you find a box that size???

Hi
I am planning on buying one of the wedding dress boxes available on the internet which conform to the airline's hand baggage dimensions. I will then carry it as hand luggage. There is no way I would let it go as checked luggage!!!

I used a FedEx box that I purchased at the store before hand and left the dress in the travel bag that I got at the bridal store - though my dress was not very big or how do I wan't to say this poufy(?) I also insured it. I guess I should/could have used acid free tissue paper to wrap the dress in too.

I went to the FedEx store to initiate the shipping.

I addition to shipping my dress I shipped 3 other boxes via FedEx to my Disney resort and did not have any issues with them getting there. I have lost or had bags rerouted by the Airlines many times - I have not experienced any problems with FedEx.

Yeah, what you said! I'll wear mine if I have to!

I had been wondering about the same thing...after I made my airline reservations, I called the airline directly to ask about carrying the dress on. They said that I could carry it on (not packed in a box or suitcase, but hanging in a bag). It counts as one of the 2 carry on items allowed, and would have to go in an overhead bin. There is no way I would put it in a checked bag. I did look into shipping to Carolyn Allen's as well, but I would then worry about UPS or FedEx losing my package!

Just FYI, you don't need a special box to ship a dress in. A friend of mine ordered my dress through her bridal salon and just shipped it directly to my house when it came in. You should see the tiny little boxes they ship dresses in between the designers and the salons. Dresses get shipped all over the country everyday.

I'm taking mine on the plane as a carry on. When I made our flight reservations I asked about it, because I was a bit worried that I would have to hold it from Halifax to Orlando! The woman assured me that not only would it definitely go in an overhead compartment, but that the flight attendants would try to get it in its own overhead bin. If that wasn't possible, she said they'd rearrange things so that my dress would be able to lay over small bags in its garment bag.

After she said all that she actually said "You're our customer, we want to make your flight as smooth as possible for you."

I was unaware that customer service like that existed anymore lol. :worship:

I haven't decided yet, mostly because I don't have my dress yet (Boy do I really need to get going on that!) but is what I really want to do is buy an extra seat on the flight down, and just set it in the seat. We are buying one way flights since we are honeymooning after our Disney wedding, so I would just need a one way flight which I should be able to get for around $100. On the way home I will just put it in a suitcase and get it steamed and preserved when I get home. If I end up getting a "non-poofy" dress then I will might just take it as a carry on and stick it in the overhead bin, but I would just feel way better if it were nicely laid on the seat next to me. I would personally be way too worried to ship it or check it, and even throwing it in the overhead bin worries me. Who knows what could happen, I have bad luck! I would rather just have the piece of mind, I know I will be stressing out about one million other things.

I shipped mine to a family member that lives in FL and was going to be attending the wedding anyways. They were able to take it out of the box and let it "rest" so the wrinkles weren't as bad. The bridal shop that I went to steamed & shipped it for me. To send it home I used the place that Disney recommends for steaming and they shipped it back to my bridal shop in MA. It was pricey, but at least I knew where my dress was.

My bridal shop agreed to pack it for me so I may use a garment bag suit case type thing and see what happens. I think I need to talk to the airline.

I bought a garment bag and am carrying it on the plane. I called the airline and they assured me they would have no problem finding a place for it and suggested, when I board, to ask if there is room in the first class coat area since it will be earlier October and there may be very few coats to hang. But, like some of the other gals who posted, my dress is not very poufy or large.

I am having some boxes shipped to the Contemporary and plan to fold the dress and ship it back home in one of those.

First class gets a coat area? Maybe I'll use my frequent flyer miles to upgrade for our flight down so I can hang my dress up there? I ship a lot of things all over the country for work, and a few packages have never turned up at their locations or been delayed due to "weather". During the "weather" incident they claimed northern NJ was having terrible thunder storms. I work in Northern NJ and we looked out the window and it was sunny and beautiful...so I don't always trust these shipping companies to get it where it needs to be on time.

Yes, first class offers an area to hang stuff up. My sister also had a dsetination wedding and when she caleld the airline to ask what to do with her dress, they told her that if on that day, there was room in first class to hang it, she could, but that they couldn't guarentee it. She ended up just putting it in a suitcase as her carry-on (her dress was really simple). I looked into upgrading to first class as well, I figured it would be a nice treat, but the flights were WAY more expensive than what I was thinking! :scared1:
