How are we not more outraged about these shootings?

Another police officer shoots a black man last night and it's barely even mentioned on the news. I had to look it up online and couldn't help but cry when I watched the video. I know police officers have a difficult job and I respect them for the job they do. It's just so heartbreaking that this keeps happening. I don't know what the solution is. I think if I were black I wouldn't carry a gun because even possessing one seems to be enough to get you shot. And it looks like it's probably a good idea to video everything. I know that police probably interact with people hundreds of thousands of times per day and nothing bad happens. It's just really upsetting when something like this happens.

Why dont you look up every police shooting that happened yesterday and lets figure out the race of all of them. Your post implies that abuse of power (no idea if this is what happened or not as i havent read much about it) only matters if the person is African American. Im willing to bet that there was at least 1 other police shooting yesterday in the U.S. in which the race was not African American. I get the issues, but i think its ridiculous that instead of addressing the issue of abuse of power, we only want to focus on the race, as if abuse of power only happens to African Americans.

I would much rather see the facts of each of these cases before rushing to judgement, as several politicians and most of the general public has today.

MANY cases which sparked violence based on "eyewitness accounts" were proven to be justifiable use of force by the police officers involved.

Politicians putting their .02 in when investigations are barely underway is just reckless, IMO.

This guy had a criminal record. Do we know for sure he had a license to carry? And if he did, why?

...Because it's his constitutional right as an American citizen to have a conceal and carry license? Also, good to know that any past indiscretion no matter how big or small is now reasonable grounds for being killed. Excellent. Like I said before, let's just scrap the whole due process thing altogether and save everyone some time.

I agree with some of this actually....
What I don't understand is how someone with a criminal record has a right to carry. I guess that depends on the record...??

You also have to realize the cop probably called in his plate and had all info, including his record and license to carry, prior to approaching the vehicle.

OP, you asked for outrage?

There's plenty more to be outraged about tonight. So sad.

When you commit certain crimes, you lose some of your rights. Like, going to jail and losing your freedom. Not saying this guy commited a crime that did preclude him from having a carry license, just curious if he did have one.

I was taught to ALWAYS keep my hands visible, during a traffic stop and have ALWAYS been asked to step out of the vehicle, BEFORE retrieving my ID. And I'm just a small woman..

I've been asked for ID several times when stopped. I've never been asked to get out of my vehicle.

The article I read said he had some traffic violations. Do you know...is being a bad driver grounds for being denied access to legally obtaining a fire arm? Because we know people on no fly lists are still allowed to legally obtain fire arms.

Yup. You can get a gun basically....always. The NRA and their moneybin have seen to that. Also - PHILANDO CASTILE DIDN'T HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD. I don't know why people seem to think he did (I mean, obviously I know why people want to believe that) but he didn't

No clue.... Im not saying he was a bad guy at all. I'm also not saying the cop was right or wrong. I'm just saying we should wait for the facts instead of lynching the cop like the old west.

I don't think a huge deal has been made. In fact I started this thread this morning because this was the second black man in two days killed by a police officer and it was caught on video and even so it was a 2 second ticker tape along the bottom of the screen during the morning news. As the day wore on I have seen more and more coverage on the shootings but I think that may have to do with the family members speaking about what happened and a number of celebrities tweeting and talking about it. I think the fact that both incidents being on video and in both instances it doesn't appear that the men did anything to provoke the police officers to shoot them (that we can see or that has been reported by any witnesses) and the timing of the shootings being only a day apart has brought more attention to these shootings.

I think if 2 white men were shot by police officers a day apart, people would be losing their minds. The attention these shootings have received would be nothing in comparison. Just look at what happens when a little white girl goes missing for example. If she's blonde forget about it...its national news. Now compare that to a little black girl going missing or especially a little black boy. He might get his local news but I can't think of a single missing black child who's story has gone national. I think it's pretty much impossible to deny that there is a difference as to how much attention a story gets and race is a huge factor. And the difference is the opposite of what you are inferring.

Wait wait wait, are you saying that you seriously dont think that 2 white ppl have ever been killed by a police officer in 2 days? Omg...i think thats beyond naive.

Well he's black so perhaps some people would like to assume that he would automatically have a criminal record. Forget the fact that by all accounts he was a nice guy who worked in a school. He'd buy kids lunch and was warm and friendly to all that knew him. He had some traffic violations but no criminal record.

I'm saying that I do not recall ever seeing videos of two different white men being killed by police on two consecutive days. If you are aware of such a thing happening I'm open to hearing about it.

How do you know for sure he didn't have a record?

How do you know for sure he didn't have a record?

Because literally every media outlet in the country has been running his background all day. If he had a record, you could easily google 'philando castilo criminal record' and see reports listing his crimes instead of the headline "Philando Castilo didn't have a record".

Because we would have heard about it by now. It's one of the first things we learn about the victims, along with seeing any mug shots.

Right, because nobody cares if it's 2 white people...really I don't either because that's not what it's about...it's about abuse of power and some really crappy people who are in positions that they shouldn't be in.

Ahh.., googling the good ole' intellious.
Indeed that's the answer.
