I'm thinking of spending 2 or 3 days in the Houston area after my daughter graduates from the U. of Dallas in May. I know I can spend one day exploring Galveston, and an afternoon/evening at the Galleria. How much time does it take for the average non-rocket scientist to visit the Johnson Space Center?

I'm not a Houstonian, but my parents lived there for years until about a week ago. We've been to the Johnson Space Center several times, so maybe I'm a little qualified to answer. :teeth: We've managed to do everything we're interested in over the course of a morning (3-4 hours). There are quite a few interesting exhibits, a theater presentation and several walk-through attractions in the main building. The Space Center also offers several tours which vary in length. We've only done the Tram Tour, and I believe it lasted an hour or so, but don't quote me on that. Check out their website at www.spacecenter.org for times, etc.

Houston's a beautiful place. I hope that you have a great visit. :)

You can spend a few hours exploring the Space Center, but you might want to leave a few more open to visit Kemah, which is nearby.

You can also visit Moody Garden while you're in Galveston and don't forget, Houston has a wonderful museum district!

Thanks for the replies! I'm trying to decide if I need 2 nights or 3 in Houston. I would arrive at Houston Hobby about 2 p.m. on a Monday (flying from Dallas on the 2nd leg of my frequent-flyer ticket). I figured I'd spend that afternoon and/or evening at the Galleria, then all day Tuesday in Galveston. The Space Center opens at 10 a.m., so I was wondering if I would have enough time to go to the Space Center on Wednesday before catching a 3:40 p.m. flight.

That might be cutting it close, with the security issues at the airports. It'll take you awhile to get back and forth. :moped:

I'd stay an extra day if possible. I agree with the above poster that the Kemah Boardwalk is a great place to go if you like unique shopping, good food and a great atmosphere. There's also a hotel onsite. We go there on every visit to Houston. It's near the Space Center.

When I visit my brother and his family, we spend a full day at the Space Center with a visit to Kemah. Before the kids I could spend at least 6 hours at the Galleria

I would just add on the extra day. I too think its cutting it close to do the Space Center then leave the same afternoon. Do you have any idea what part of town or hotel you would like to stay at?

Hopefully this link can be posted on here: http://www.kemahboardwalk.com/

This whole place is owned by Tillman Fertitta (who's a relative by marriage, of mine). You've probably eaten at one of his restaurants across the nation. His empire is growing by leaps and bounds! He's bought a casino in Vegas as well!

Outside of the Boardwalk are lots of shops, inside of old houses. Sort of like Old Town Spring (which is right by my house and another good day trip). Here's a link to that: http://www.oldtownspringtx.com/ and http://www.oldtownspring.com/

Near Old Town Spring, is Splashtown as well. And near that, is the new Woodlands Waterway and Market Street. Here are some links for The Woodlands: http://www.town-center.com/ and http://www.marketstreet-thewoodlands.com/

The Woodlands/Spring may be too much for your timeframe, but if you decide to head north, instead of south towards Galveston, this would be a good alternative.

Now watch me get booted from here for posting all of these links. ;)

We do have an awesome museum district! The Museum Of Natural Science has the Mummy exhibit going on thru February, and an actual rail car used in to deport people to Auschwitz arrived at our Holocaust Museum yesterday. I haven't been that museum yet, but I bet it's pretty powerful.

I'm gonna have to hit both! I didn't know they had the mummy exhibit already, and I haven't been to the Holocaust Museum yet

My DD has been asking for years to take her to the Holocaust Museum and while I'd like to go, I'm scared of how I'll react to it in public. I'm a big ol' cry baby.

I havent been to our Holocaust museum here but I have the one in DC. It was very powerful. So sad to see the railcar or the pile of shoes.
Having 2 little ones though most of our visits are to the Childrens Museum.
