There is a slight possibility that I may be going to the Superbowl. Can anyone tell me anything about Houston, hotels, restaurants, things to do? Thanks
Tara

If you shop, go to the Galleria, when I brought DD7 there when she was 4, she met Tara Lapinski, the professional figure skater. She was skating in the rink located inside the mall.

Also we went to the Houston Zoo, nothing really to brag about, but it was "winter"...

We spent most of our time at the mall though, its huge!..

Yes! The Galleria is amazing - every time my friends and I have a chance, we head up there and shop like crazy. (I live about 45 minutes away). It also has a Cheesecake Factory restaurant, which serves pretty much the most delicious food ever created. There are also a bunch of shopping centers surrounding the Galleria, which are pretty neat too. (Across the street there's a store devoted entirely to chocolate! They have little sculptures made from the stuff and they're sooo cute!)

If you get a chance, go to the downtown Aquarium. It's a restaurant and bar that also doubles as an aquarium - the walls are pretty much giant fish tanks (like the Living Seas restaurant in Epcot). There's also a "movie theatre" inside for the kids, much like the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theatre at MGM. It's a really cool place.

There's also the zoo, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Museum of Natural History which are all really interesting. I've been a couple of times and absolutely loved it. The Houston Ballet is also fantastic, not sure if they're performing anything right now though.

Outside of Houston, there's also the Kemah boardwalk and Galveston Island, which are both really fun - not sure if you want to make the 45 minute drive out of downtown, though.

Anyway, I hope you have a GREAT time when (or if) you come down to Houston! If you have any more questions, feel free to ask! :)

Sights -- Skyscraping downtown architecture; NASA's Johnson Space Center; the Galleria; historic Sam Houston Park.
Museums -- The Museum of Fine Arts (and its Lillie and Hugh Roy Cullen Sculpture Garden); the Houston Museum of Natural Science; Bayou Bend; the Menil Collection; Byzantine Fresco Chapel Museum.

Memorable Meals -- Smoked rack of lamb and creamy coconut ice cream at Americas; gumbo and buttercake at Treebeards; pepper crabs and garlic shrimp at Kim Son; rabbit enchiladas at Cafe Annie.

Late Night -- After-theater Spanish tapas at Solero; lounging at Mint; jazz at Scott Gutner's Sky Bar.

Walks -- Houston Arboretum & Nature Center; the Heights Boulevard walking trail; downtown via the tunnel system.

Reliant Stadium

The Aquarium is a fun restaurant with excellent sea food. It's just a fun place :)

I stayed at the Hyatt in Downtown Houston a year ago. Loved it, very beautiful hotel.

Do not stay at this hotel near Reliant Stadium. It is a dump.

Also, in case you are planning on driving around Houston... ;)

Houston Traffic Rules for people visiting during Super Bowl

For those who will be visiting the fair city of Houston for the Superbowl
in January!

1. You must learn to pronounce the city name. It is "Ewe-stun", not
"Huestun." Oh yea, it is pronounced "San Phal-ee-pay," not
"San Phil-eep" (San Felipe).

2. Forget the traffic rules you learned elsewhere. Houston has its own
version of traffic rules...Hold on and pray. There is no such thing as a
dangerous high-speed chase in Houston. We all drive like that.

3. All directions start with, "Go down to Loop 610".... which has no beginning and no end.

4. The Chamber of Commerce calls getting through traffic...a "Scenic Drive."

5. The morning rush hour is from 6:00AM to 10:00AM. The evening rush
hour is from 3:00PM to 7:00PM. Friday's rush hour starts Thursday morning.

6. If you actually stop at a yellow light, you will be rear-ended,
cussed out and possibly shot. When you are the first one off
the starting line, count to five when the light turns green before going, to
avoid getting into any cross-traffic's way.

7. Kuykendahl Road can ONLY be pronounced by a native Houstonian.

8. Construction on I-10, I-45, US 59 and Loop 610 is a way of life and
a permanent form of entertainment.

9. All unexplained smells are explained by the phrase, "Oh, we must be
in Pasadena!!!."

10.If someone actually has their turn signal on, it is probably a
factory defect.

11.All old ladies with blue hair in a pink Cadillac have total right-of-way.

12.The minimum acceptable speed on Loop 610 is 85 mph. Anything less
is considered downright sissy.

13.The wrought iron on windows in east Houston is NOT ornamental.

14.Never stare at the driver of the car with the bumper sticker that
says, "Keep honking, I'm reloading." In fact, don't honk at anyone.

15.If you are in the left lane, and only going 70 mph in a 60 mph
zone, people are not waving when they go by.

16.The Sam Houston Toll road is our daily version of NASCAR.

17.If it's 100 degrees, Thanksgiving must be next weekend.

18.When in doubt, remember that all unmarked exits lead to Louisiana.

19.You don't have to wait for an exit to get off a freeway, just
follow the ruts in the grass to the frontage road like everyone else. This is how
Houston residents notify Texas Department of Transportation where exits should have been built.

Grog :rotfl:

Love the Houston Traffic Rules and it is ssoooo true!!! (or some of it is anyway)

We love to eat at Pappasitos (Mexican Food) and Pappadeaux's (Seafood).

OMG!! We went to Six Flags in 1994 and I could not believe the way people over there drove. I kept seeing signs all along the interstate that said "Drive friendly...the Texas Way". Yeah, 75 and over on the service roads! If you were in the left hand lane and needed to get off at the next exit...just do a 45 degree turn in front of everyone else!!!
And I always thought the Louisiana drivers were crazy!!
Oh,well, if you can drive in Houston, or Dallas, you can drive ANYWHERE!!
