Houston, We Have A Secret: A TX Vacation With A WDW Surprise ...aaand Done! Page 43

I figured it was about time I stopped just reading and actually spoke up (or piled on as the case may be :lmao:).
:sad2:
:rotfl2:

Y’all put together an amazing surprise reveal for the young’ens. I would however recommend not teaching the kids anything about geography, or you’ll never pull that off again (that would also fit in with that “good parenting” thing you were on about :rolleyes1).
Thanks. I'm way to nerdy not to teach my kids geography. Bambi and I will just have to raise our games a little bit for the next surprise. Oh, and yes...there is another surprise in the works. :rolleyes1
As for the benefits of being on the ships… Yep, they’re everything that there billed as. I’ll start writing up a TR on our trip as soon s we get back home so you’ll have to drop in and check it out.
Awesome! I can't wait to read it - I'm really enjoying your current TR. (Shameless plug - Everyone go check out Rob's Trip Report here. There aren't as many puns, but don't let that fool you - it's still a very well written TR!)

By the way, we’re still planning to be at the WL on July 1 & 2 after the cruise, so we should try to put together a DDC meet during that timeframe if possible.
Yes! I've been meaning to ask you about that. Our park days are in the midst of a shakeup right now, but as soon as we get them settled I'm sure we can work something out. You're doing a non-parks trip, right?

Well played sir. Well played.
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2
Thank you!
Thats....kind of scary. Please tell me that was a parity and not a clip from your brother's favorite TV show.

Looking forward to reading about that next surprise. I anticipate that we’ll be witnessing greatness.

Awesome! I can't wait to read it - I'm really enjoying your current TR. (Shameless plug - Everyone go check out Rob's Trip Report here. There aren't as many puns, but don't let that fool you - it's still a very well written TR!)

Humbled am I…
Thanks, and I didn’t give you anything (but a hard time).

Of course now I’ll have to make certain that the next one is actually worth reading. :rolleyes1

Yes! I've been meaning to ask you about that. Our park days are in the midst of a shakeup right now, but as soon as we get them settled I'm sure we can work something out. You're doing a non-parks trip, right?

As of today anyway… The current plan it to just enjoy the resorts and the general Bay Lake area for a couple of days after the cruise, so I’ll likely be a bit more flexible on my end of the scheduling. Dolewhips at the Polly or a nosh at DTD or Boardwalk might be good posibilities.

Bambi and I had just checked in to the Animal Kingdom Lodge and were on our way via Disney Transportation to the Magic Kingdom. Madison and Evan were already there, having hitched a ride with Grandma & Grandpa right from the airport. Now that you're all caught up....

IMG_6173.JPG

We entered the Magic Kingdom (without kids for the first time - that felt very weird) to see that they had a band playing in our honor! But for some reason, they were facing the wrong way. Oh well, it's the thought that counts!

Our first order of business - food. The snacks that Southwest gives you on the airplane are perfect if you're either a)not hungry to begin with, b)2 years old and have a stomach the size of a tennis ball, or c)some kind of model that survives on ice chips a Ritz cracker a day. However, we are none of the above and it was now almost 2 pm. Luckily, one of our favorite places to eat is also one of the closest to the entrance. We ordered our food but could not find a place to sit. We found a nice railing outside to lean on, which turned out to be a blessing in diguise, because it allowed me to take what has become to be known as One of My Most Favoritest Pictures In the Known (And Most of the Unknown) Universe©

IMG_6176.JPG

For those of you counting at home, that's 3 Levels of Awesome in this picture. Casey's Corn Dogs, My Lovely Wife, and Cinderella's Castle.*

*Levels of Awesome are listed in geographic order, starting at the camera and moving away. Nothing should be inferred about the relative importance of any level based on how they were listed in the description.

So, with some delicious deep fried goodness filling us up, we decided to do what any good parents would do - find our kids and give them the FastPasses to Buzz Lightyear.

DSCF0324.JPG

Yeah, right! We sneaked over to Tomorrowland - commando crawling, hiding behind rocks and wearing fake glasses and mustaches so our kids wouldn't see us and demand/beg for the FastPasses.

I'm not sure this ride is as much about battling The Evil Emperor Zurg as it is battling the person next to you. And has been the case since the beginning of time, Bambi took me to the woodshed on this one.

DSCF0326.JPG

(The glare is pretty bad, but the score is 229,900)

IMG_6178.JPG

I still hate this ride.

We grabbed some Space Mountain FastPasses before starting to make our way over to Fantasyland, where Bambi's parents were about to take the kids on it's a small world. On the way, I noticed this wacky tourist guy enjoying PUSH the trash can do his bit
IMG_6179.JPG

IMG_6180.JPG

I walked around him a bit and glanced into his bag. I didn't want to make it obvious by taking a picture, but he had a pretty sweet looking remote in there.

Our travels took us up along the construction walls, where we saw a nice new castle taking shape.

IMG_6181.JPG

IMG_6182.JPG

(Impressive zoom, this camera has.:yoda:)

We enjoyed a few minutes in the air conditioning and shade of the exit to its a small world when we were finally reunited with our kids.

DSCF0329.JPG

They wanted to ride the carpets, so we headed over to Adventureland. The sun was pretty brutal that day, so while the family was in line for the ride, I snuck over to gather up a little surprise.

IMG_6184.JPG

It's not often you get to see a carpet-eye view back down off the ride...
100_1465.JPG

The timing was perfect, as I returned with a little treat just as they were getting off the ride.

IMG00217-20110427-1455.jpg

Being evolutionarily limited to only two hands, I only bought two Dole Whip Floats. (Come on, Darwin - let's see if we sprout a few more carrying appendages in the next couple of generations!) Between the 6 of us, they went pretty quick. And - it was the first Dole Whip Floats for both Grandma & Grandpa. Based on their reaction, however, they will not be the last.

As I mentioned, it was hot this day - and the kids were pretty tired from the plane ride and the excitement of the surprise. They wanted to go back and swim, but after one more ride...

IMG_6192.JPG

It helped that Pirates was nearly a walk on. I say nearly, because we did have to stop once for that picture, and once about 30 feet later in the queue. I was carrying Evan and we were singing a jolly rendition of the Pirate's theme, when he punctuated the "ho" in "Yo Ho!" with a fist in the air. However, on the way to the air, the fist caught my glasses, knocking them clear off my face. I had a hard time finding them. Not because I'm blind without them, but because it's really, really dark in there.

However, glasses found, we jumped on our boat and set sail for the Caribbean!

We wants the red head!
IMG_6200.JPG

After Pirates, the kids and grandparents went headed back to the hotel while we crossed the park to use up those Fast Passes to Space Mountain. I don't think there is a ride in Disney World when the Fast Pass users walk so fast by so many people in the standby line and get so many dirty looks. A good portion of the queue is long and straight. As we power walked/jogged by all of those people standing in line we commented on how cool some of those new interactive games looked. Not cool enough to stop, though - we had a mountain to climb! Or zoom around, as the case may be.

IMG_6208.JPG

IMG_6209.JPG

Why is Bambi smiling so big in this picture? Well, it could be that it was (finally) her first ride on Space Mountain since the refurb a few years ago. But more than likely it because she has a bumbling fool for a husband that occasionally is good for something. And this one of those times. We had given our FastPasses to the FastPass Gate Keeper, but the line to actually board the ride was still 50 or 75 people long. The person loading was looking for a party of two to fill out the train. Surely, there had to be a party of two somewhere in front of us. He called once and I said nothing. He called twice and I said nothing. Finally, after he called a third time for a party of two, I grabbed Bambi by the hand, started pulling her up past the line and called out "we're a party of two!"

So we FastPassed the FastPass line and jumped into our rocket with no waiting.

I was carrying the camera as we started the ride and as we entered the tunnel of the blue squares, I thought "Hmmm... I wonder." I kept the flash off, held the camera tight to my body to try to minimize the shake, and pushed the shutter release. The exposure ended up being 2.5 seconds and the picture turned out like this...
IMG_6210.JPG

On our way out, I noticed the DJ stand at the Tomorrowland Stage and immediately added something to my "want!" list for my own MacBook.

IMG_6214.JPG

We just caught Dale...
IMG_6215.JPG

...and Chip....

IMG_6216.JPG

...coming out for a dance party. But it was hot and we wanted to get over to Animal Kingdom in time to do some swimming with the kids.

And in pure Disney fashion, they arranged for the same band that played us in to serenade us on the way out.

IMG_6217.JPG

Coming Up Next: Swimming! Eating! Shopping!

Looking forward to reading about that next surprise. I anticipate that we’ll be witnessing greatness.
You've read all of the entries so far. What would give you the impression that greatness is coming? Besides law of averages, that is?:confused3

Why the small print on this disclaimer? First of all it should go without saying, but if you're going to say it don't do it in fine print.:rotfl2:

By the way, were you able to successfully complete the taking of that picture without losing the precariously balanced mustard cup?:rolleyes1

Do you ever even shoot your gun or do you just take pictures the whole time?:confused3

Don't blame Darwin because you weren't smart enough to order 3, down 1 of them on the spot and carry the other 2 back for everyone else.:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

Woohoo, great update! Thanks so much for posting the pics of Beast's Castle, it looks really awesome in the distance there.

We entered the Magic Kingdom (without kids for the first time - that felt very weird)

There was a party of two! And don't call me Shirley. :rotfl2:

Anyway, nice job jumping the line.

Almost perfect…

*Levels of Awesome are listed in geographic order, starting at the camera and moving away. Nothing should be inferred about the relative importance of any level based on how they were listed in the description.

Yep… That fixed it. Now it’s perfect.

I'm not sure this ride is as much about battling The Evil Emperor Zurg as it is battling the person next to you. And has been the case since the beginning of time, Bambi took me to the woodshed on this one.

I think you missed an opportunity to blame it on all that “deep fried goodness” you’d just consumed.

We enjoyed a few minutes in the air conditioning and shade of the exit to its a small world when we were finally reunited with our kids.

DSCF0329.JPG

Lets see… Up to now, you’ve gotten to enter the park for the first time as a couple, been serenaded by the Main Street Band, consumed mass quantities, gotten your fanny waxed on the Space Ranger Spin, caught “Push” in action, been reunited with your kids and accomplish the amazing feat of not having to ride in IASW. Hummmm… I’m not sure how you can make this day any better.

The timing was perfect, as I returned with a little treat just as they were getting off the ride.

Sometimes you win (saver that one, if it were me, I’d end up paying for somewhere else later on).

Very cool picture.

Law of averages pretty much sums it up.

We didn't have enough to give to the kids. It would not have been fair if I had to take one of the kids and you had to stay with the other. You would have had to deal with a screaming child...or they would have had deal with a crying adult. Either way, not a good sight.

(The glare is pretty bad, but the score is 229,900)

Also some awesomeness! I want one! Of course, I want a MacBook too. Maybe we should work on that first....oh, Captain!

Very entertaining update Barry! Way cool picture on Space Mountain.

But....the funniest thing was Kathy's (KatMark) comment, "Boy, and I thought I was bad at Buzz!" :lmao:

Sounds like a great time! Lucky you guys got to cut to the front so early! Also YAY for casey's and Dole Whips!!!!!! Both of those places have a special place in my families hearts.

They must have given you extra, because I was thinking golf ball or ping pong ball would be a more appropriate comparison.:lmao:
We got a package of peanuts with a salt to peanut ratio of close to 2:1. They also gave us some kind of nutrigrain bar that wasn't too bad. Of course I was a captive audience so I probably would have eaten just about anything they put in front of me.

Why the small print on this disclaimer? First of all it should go without saying, but if you're going to say it don't do it in fine print.:rotfl2:
Comedic effect. Just trying to keep you readers on your toes.
By the way, were you able to successfully complete the taking of that picture without losing the precariously balanced mustard cup?:rolleyes1
Ta Da! For my next trick, I shall make this cup full of corn dogs disappear!
Do you ever even shoot your gun or do you just take pictures the whole time?:confused3
Don't you have corn to plant or something?:headache:

In Adventureland... hmmm... I wonder what that surprise could possibly be.:goodvibes
I can't tell you, because my mouth is full of Dole Whip. I can't type it either, because so are my fingers.

Don't blame Darwin because you weren't smart enough to order 3, down 1 of them on the spot and carry the other 2 back for everyone else.:lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:
As awesome as Dole Whips are, they are not above the immutable law of the ice cream headache. Though, they would be worth one....

Woohoo, great update! Thanks so much for posting the pics of Beast's Castle, it looks really awesome in the distance there.
Thanks! It's coming along nicely, but I'm sure they have a lot of work to do yet.

I'm sure you got used to it, hard as it may be.
My standard response would something along the lines of "that's the sacrifices we make for our kids..." but the kids weren't actually there, so....
Those are the sacrifices we make for ourselves. :thumbsup2

Well said. Usually I can get the kids to give me their peanuts.
Do the kids even know they get peanuts, or do your just grab them right from the flight attendant?

I hope you have that framed somewhere. If only you'd managed to get Aaron Rodgers in the shot somehow.
You're right! I guess this will have to do:
Aaron-rodgers-disney-world.jpg

[NERD]Camera geek question: we were close to getting a zoom lens to put on our camera. Is it better to get a zoom to pair with our kit lens, or try and find one all-around lens like yours? Most websites speak of downgrades in image quality with the all-around lenses, but your pictures look great to me.[/NERD]
I debated that same thing, and in the end, convenience won out over price. The way life works is that you will never have the right lens on when a perfect Kodak moment (or in my case, Canon moment) strikes. Having to stop, change the lens (while keeping dust out of the camera body and off the sensor) make sure the old lens get put in a safe place, etc. We carry enough stuff with us when we travel, adding another lens just seemed like too much.
I ready the same reviews that mentioned the image downgrades. One site (I think it was dpreview.com) had some examples - but I could only see it when the image was super zoomed in, and then it was very minor issues. Maybe if you plan to blow your pictures up to mural size and display them in a museum you'd want to stay away from the all-arounds, but for normal every day shooting, I don't see any problems with the quality. Feel free to ask any questions you have here or PM me. I can give you all of the knowledge I've gathered over the years. Shouldn't take much more than 5 minutes or so.

Grandparents took one for the team there.
That's their ride - the one the kids always love doing with their grandparents. And if Bambi and I have to miss it, well, "that's the sacrifices we make for our kids." (See how I recalled something from earlier in this response? It's some kind of fancy literary technique that I'm sure has a name, but I don't know what it is.

They're probably buying their own Dole Whip machine as we speak to make up for all of the lost years.
Sounds like I'll be spending a lot more time at the in-laws...:thumbsup2

Serves 'em right. Suckers. :stir:

There was a party of two! And don't call me Shirley. :rotfl2:

I know you were bursting at the seams to put that one in there. I'll take the heat from Bambi so you don't have to. :thumbsup2
Actually, I'm pretty sure you've joined the exclusive club of people that Bambi will no longer pay any attention to. Welcome! :thumbsup2

What a suck up!
Whatever works!
I would have done the same thing.
Every parent loves their kids. But faced with the same situation, anyone that says they wouldn't do this is a flat out liar. :thumbsup2
Boy, and I thought I was bad at Buzz!
Har har har. :headache:
Have NEVER had a Dole Whip.
:eek:What's stopping you? Are you allergic to awesome?
Score one for Barry!
I may suck at Buzz, but I am good for some things!

That's still MUCH better than my average score (somewhere in the vicinity of 8K). No, I am not ashamed. :snooty::rotfl:

Good for you! We don't need to save the galaxy every time, you know.

Almost perfect…

Yep… That fixed it. Now it’s perfect.
My lawyer insisted I put that in there.

I think you missed an opportunity to blame it on all that “deep fried goodness” you’d just consumed.
She had the same thing, so it wouldn't work as an excuse. (But I did steal some of her fries when she wasn't looking, so I guess technically I had more deep fried goodness slowing me down...

I stand corrected
I'm actually surprised Disney edits all of those Super Bowl MVP speeches down. The whole line is actually:
Announcer: Aaron Rodgers, you just won the Super Bow! What are you going to do now?
Super Bowl XLV MVP Aaron Rodgers: "I'm got to Disney World to get a Dole Whip!"

Sometimes you win (saver that one, if it were me, I’d end up paying for somewhere else later on).
I'm sure I already have.

Very cool picture.
Thanks!

Law of averages pretty much sums it up.
:thumbsup2

You mean the first time since we have had kids. There was that one time we went to WDW before kids but it really does not count.
Of course. :rolleyes1:rolleyes1

That Castle really is awesome.
It's actually number three on the list, right behind the corn dogs.:love:

We didn't have enough to give to the kids. It would not have been fair if I had to take one of the kids and you had to stay with the other. You would have had to deal with a screaming child...or they would have had deal with a crying adult. Either way, not a good sight.
No, but it made for better artistic liberty in the story.

I love this ride.
You can have this one. But I own Toy Story Midway Mania.

No, you are just blind without them.
Not true. And to prove it, I'll type the next sentence without them.

Thank you. Being awesome is what Barrys do best.
