My DH was talking about wanting to own his own place, but the prices here in Hawaii are VERY expensive. From what friends have told me, prices in their area is less expensive.
What is the rate of houses and apartments/condos in your area, for sale and rent prices?

Homes (townhomes) start at around $400,000 here, a 2 bedroom apartment in a desirable part of Washington D.C. would rent for a minimum of $1800/month. Moving out to the suburbs the rent would be cheaper but not much cheaper. We own a condo in the Maryland suburban area that rents for $1200/month.

I live in the far suburbs of nyc (about 2 hours north) and prices here have absolutely skyrocketed. The apartment I rent is a 2 bedroom, one bathroom, with a living room, large kitchen, and a small laundry room and it is $925 a month, plus gas and electric and all of that good stuff. But to give you a better idea, my parents live about an hour north of NYC, and they just sold the house that they bought for $160,000 in 1995 for a little over 400000 a few months ago.

In my neighborhood (suburb of Boston, about 30 miles southeast near the Rhode Island border) the median house price is just shy of $350,000 but that won't buy you much in our town. The average sale price listing this weekend was closer to $500K. That would get you a 4 bedroom, 1.5 or 2 bathroom house with a 2 car garage on less than an acre of land, more of a no-frills/low frills home (no c/a, hardwood floors, central vac, custom cabinets, etc...just a plain old house). House rentals are typically $2000 plus.

Apartments rent from $900-1100 for a one bedroom and $1200-2000 for a two bedroom.

Pretty much the same as Snoopy said. In Northern Va, townhomes 300 - 500K, Single families, older, smaller, high 300s. Newer 500K on up to 1 million plus.

A little further south, outside of Charlottesville, you can get homes 250 - 400K ish.

Hawaii is outrageous. Inlaws built on Kauai about a year ago. They aren't even considering selling and have gotten offers of 1.2 million. House and land probably cost them 400 - 450K.

Are you planning to stay in Hawaii? Which island are you on?

In my Dallas suburb, a brand-new 3 br,2 bath apartment rented for $1300. I live in a sort of small house for the area - it's about 8 years old, 1900 sq. ft., and worth around $155,000. I'll know later in the week - appraiser coming today for our re-financing!
I'd say most homes in my area are between $200-600,000.

I would love to stay here since my parents and sister lives here and they would terribly miss my daughter, so we didn't seriously consider moving before, but if my husband does ever want to buy his own house, we were thinking of Las Vegas. We have visited there many of times and there is the good and bads for us.

Good-My BIL and his wife lives there along with my DH's cousins. That would be the one state that people would come and visit us since alot of Hawaii people go to Vegas for trips. We could get good airplane rates to fly back home, there are lots of Hawaii people up there and it feels like home at times, prices are cheaper....

Bad-I don't like the weather, I don't want to raise my daughter there, my parents and sister are not there.

I live on The Big Island.

I, too, live 2 hours North of NYC and here the homes are ridiculous! We are in the Hudson Valley and homes here are going for 125,000 for an 800 sq. ft. home?!!? :faint: One bedroom apartments are going for $750.

We're about 50 miles outside of Manhattan right on Amtracks NE corridor line. A townhouse or older small house goes for 275-350k. A newer single family home starts around 450k. Rentals start around $1200 for a small apt or a townhouse share.

In Waco, 4 bedroom, 2 bath 2200 sq ft brand new homes go for about $100,000 - 140,000 or so...

My best friend just bought a new home (Same specs as above) for $144,000 in a growing Dallas suburb (outside of Plano/Garland/Sachse). They built it, huge lot too.

We rent a 1100 sq ft 2 bed/1 bath house for $595 a month, in Waco.

We did rent a 1100 sq ft 2 bed/2 bath townhouse here for same price.

My sister just rented a house in Mesquite, TX (outside of Dallas) for $850 a month - 3 bed/2 bath.

My best friend (who just bought the house) was renting a 2 bedroom/2 bath multistory apartment with garage, gated community, etc for $1100 a month in Richardson

Happened to know those off the top of my head so thought i'd offer =)

In MA, sale I have no idea...but way more than I can possibly afford for at least 10 years. My Bf's mom just sold her very small house, in a suburb 40 minutes from Boston via highway and got 350K for it. This was a really small house.

Rents around here are outrageous. They tend to be around 900-1300 for a one to two BR. Right now I live with my BF in a closet of a 1BR and we pay 700, BUT we are only paying that because we know the landlord and he won't raise our rent. If he were to have new tenants, he'd charge $900 for it.

My friend just moved into a small 1 br w/ a den that she is paying 1100 for. My previous apt. when I lived alone after my ex moved out was a semi-large 3 br condo in a complex and it was $1400 (I only stayed because my landlord was an ...um...donkey...and he said he was holding me liable for the rent or my ex and I would have to split it and my ex certainly was not willing to split it  )

My brother & his wife pay something like $1300 for a 2br (in a very bad area).

like snoopy said, townhomes around here (not new ones!) run between $300-400,000.

we have a small 2br 1ba old apartment. we pay about $1300/month, which is a deal. it would be a couple hundred more, except we've lived here for some time.

when we lived downtown we had a one bedroom TINY apartment that went for $2000/month....and that was 5 years ago.

Yeah, those were guestimates on my part. Thanks for the clarification, Caity. I know rent has skyrocketed as much as the cost of housing. I honestly do not know how young people just starting out afford to live here. I'm sure they have to forget about ANY extras like vacations or going out to eat/to the movies, etc. Its just outrageous.

From the sounds of it, we all need to move to Texas! A 4 bedroom house for $100,000??? Dang! Where's my cowboy hat? I'm moving! :p

I know, I think we could practically buy the whole state for what some houses are going for up here ;) . I think it would give new meaning to teleworking.

A 1 bdrm in a decent neighborhood, about $2500 per month. You might luck out and get something for $2000 in a ify neighborhood or a apt in a private house.

A 3 bdrm house, 1 car garage, smallish/average lot, around $500k. $400k would buy you a fix er up er. The same house in a upper middle class neighborhood would be around $700k.

Like I had mentioned one of my friends who told me about house prices is from Texas, and when she heard the prices that we pay here, man she said that you could get a mansion for that price or two houses.

This sounds pretty comparable to Rockland County, NY (where I live). A friend of mine just bought a house - split-level, 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bath, maybe 1800 sq. ft. tops on a small lot, they paid $453,000.

We live about 30 mins. North of Seattle. We have a 2 bed/2 bath apt. and we pay $925 a month. Rent downtown is MUCH more. The one bedrooms that we looked at near Seattle started around $1200 and went up.

Housing around here is getting harder as well. In the town we live in you used to be able to find a nice home for around $250,000, now they start in the mid $300's and go up. In the town my parents live in (25 mins. north of Seattle) the housing prices start around $500K and go up from there.
We figure we will never own a home, or at least not for many years!

I live in Alabama and I guess all of you could move here and buy mansions. We live in a very nice neighborhood where the homes range from 2,200 square feet to 6,000 square feet. The prices range from $220,000 to $500,000. We had some new neighbors move in a couple of weeks ago from the D.C. area and they thought they stole their house. It is 3,600 square feet and they paid $299,000 for it. We're friendly down here if you don't mind our accents. ;) Oh, and our property tax is very low also.
