I've read on some other websites about daily tipping for housekeeping will probably get you better service. What's the guideline for tipping at the All-Star resorts.

Welcome to the DIS Boards. Tipping for housekeeping is usually a $1.00 a day per person. We place our tips in clearly marked envelopes so housekeeping has no doubt that it's for them. :)

Yes, that seems to be the "Golden Rule of Thumb". $1.00 per person per day. We are a family of 4 and leave $5.00. This does NOT say that you will get the little towel animals or cute arrangements, but we usually do have plenty of towels and they alway leave a little note saying "Thank You!". While you are there and if you happen to see mousekeeping in a room, look in to see how bad it might have been left. We are VERY NEAT! We leave all the dirty towels in one pile in the bathroom, put all the trash bags in one location with knots tied in them so they don't have to handle any of our trash. We even go as far as to clean off the counters and rinse the tub. I am kind of a neat freak, but still I have seen some rooms that more than make up for mine being clean. I do feel for those people some times.

The first week we were at the Sports resort we had a wonderful mousekeeper. She would leave extra towels got us extra piilows within minutes of asking and did wonderful things with the window in our room. The last day she was there before Christmas she let us know and i gave her a tip in person and told her how much we enjoyed the extra,s she did.She took me out to her cart and gave me 12 bars of soap and a handful pens and told me give them to all my friends,LOL.The mouse keeper who took over for her never made the beds and only left towels and toilet paper every second day. They did not get tipped.

wannabebelle,

I don't know if you already know this or not, but it is a good idea
to tip Daily. You may not have the same mousekeeper from day to day. If after the first day or two you have bad service you could stop tipping but that is your call. It's not good to leave a big tip the last day since you don't know if the mousekeeper that did all the good stuff for you is the same one on that last day. From what the mousekeepers have told me, they don't share their tips no matter who it was intended for. Who ever get's the room ~ get's the tip.

The eternal question when (and if) to tip housekeeping.

I prefer to tip at the end of my stay (whether at wdw or another hotel).

It's really a matter of preference and what's easier for you. I travel single or with one adult friend in the room, we are not messy and other than clean towels and dusting, vacuuming, etc. there is not a lot to do in the room, so I'm not a big tipper unless I have made some request or I feel that the housekeeper (or server, bellman, etc) has gone above and beyond.

My last visit to WL was one such case, I was well taking care of by mousekeeping and left what I felt was an appropriate tip on my last day there.

As far as getting better service if you tip daily, I would liken that to trying to bribe someone for better service. If someone is only going to give to the good service to someone who ponies up the dough then I'd rather not have them waiting on me to being with.

Well, dznyntnh, I'm glad you said that as it reflects my underlying question. I hope this doesn't upset anyone, and I don't mean to be rude, but I don't fully understand tipping a housekeeper. I mean--that's their job. You tip waiters, but they only make like $2 something an hour. Granted, I'm sure the housekeepers don't make a lot, but I just never saw housekeeping as a group that got tips except in really fancy hotels until about 5 years ago.

Again, I don't mean to hurt feelings or upset anyone, but in a way, it just seems like more of a bribe. Am I missing something? Just behind the etiquette curve? Maybe when I get there and have a great one, I'll feel differently.

I don't think of it as a bribe. I tip because they do a good job. I wouldn't want to have to clean rooms for a living.

I like to think of it as spreading a little magic back to the Mousekeeper that cleans my room.

Kelly, did you call Guest Services or the Mousekeeping supervisor? I mean, it's one thing for the room not to quite pass a "white glove test," and another thing entirely for the beds to not even be made. Sheesh.
