Do people generally tip daily or at the end of their stay? Do you leave money in the room or at the front desk? How much do you think is an average daily amount for standard service at a moderate resort?

Thanks...leaving in a few days!

We tip everyday becauses sometimes the housekeepers change during your stay. We always put the money in envelopes before our trip & write "houskeeping" on them. I think the standard spot to place tips is on the pillow. We are a family of 4 and usually leave $5.00 a day, I think it is usually $1.00 per person per night.

We tip daily and place the tip in an envelope labeled housekeeping and leave it on the pillow. We also tip $1.00 per person.

We tip $1 per person staying in the room per day. We put it in an envelope in front of the tv and write housekeeper on it. To me whether you are at a moderate or a deluxe should not matter. The housekeeper has to do the same work to clean the room. We tip daily because it is our understanding that you might not have the same housekeeper everyday. When you think about that it makes sense because who works seven days a week?

Mousekeeping at WDW is not considered a tiped position. Many have choosen to tip, though, their choice. If you choose to tip, tip daily, you may not have the same mousekeep each day. $1 per person per day seems to be "standard practice" for those who have choosen to tip.

We stayed at BWI last October (DH and myself). We had envelopes (we put in five dollars) made up ahead of time for each day and left it by the television. I do believe though that one dollar per person in the room is adequate. Having them made up ahead of time is really convenient, one less thing to worry about.

I always thought housekeeping was part of what you paid for the room.(?) When did tipping start for housekeeping? As you can tell its been awhile since I have stayed at a hotel.

I totally agree Pluto2. It's what is included in the price of the room. Unless they go above and beyond their general duties!...

We've always left tips. I'm sure the mousekeepers aren't making the greatest $$$. We made up MOUSEKEEPING envelopes really cute pictures (got them from one of these boards). We put in $1.00 per person (had lots of ones from my "disney" garage sale. I must say they were VERY good and I've stayed at many hotels. My daughter's animals were always doing something (looking out windows, tucked in bed, etc. and we couldn't wait to see what was next.

I agree that housekeeping is included in the cost of the room. Disney has said, pretty much such, by not including them as a tiped position.

While this may be true, they took the job knowing what the hourly wage is going to be.

Not having made up the envelopes before hand the last couple of times we were there we just tipped at the end of our stay. (to be honest I hadnt thought of doing it before & the last thing you want to do in WDW in the morning is rummage through your wallet:) ) Now We will definately do it per day-- I have 3 quick questions:
-If we DID leave the tip on the last day-- say we left $20 would the person who was cleaning split it with whoever else did or keep it all them self?
-I also agree that if you ARE going to tip that $1 per person per day is adequate- BUT...even if theres only 2 people staying in the room? Is it insulting for them to open the envelope to find only $2 & not at least $5?
-for the first time we are staying at a villa- our confirmation says we will get Trash/towel service once, & housekeeping full service twice- during the duration of our stay. How do we go about tipping in this situation?
Although we have always tipped- I do think that you are paying for a hotel service when you book your room-- just as I wouldnt tip a lifeguard for their service- I feel that that is their job. But I feel that in WDW they do go above & beyond - not just cleaning like any other hotel, so we try to give what we can! Thanks so much in advance to anyone that can help me out!!:)

I just posted this on the oter tippong thread, but with DVC you pretty much keep your own room clean. There will be everything you need available in your room for this. On trasha nd towel day I tip $1. per person (I always put all towels in the tub for a quick pick-up and dump my own trash all into one bag that is all tied up.) On full cleaning day I tip $2 per person and again I hae the trash and towels ready for them to just pick up. They scour the bathroom and the kitchen, dust vaccume and change the linens. We don't leave a big mess and I never feel funny leaving $4. or $8 or $12 in an envelope, ( last trip 2 TT services and 1 full cleaning= 2 $4 tips and 1 $8 tip total $16 rather than $20.00, besides if I rounded it up all the time there would be no money left over for my MM ice cream treat! LOL

If you are going to tip you really should do it each day. The mousekeepers change day to day some time during your stay. I tip at any hotel I saty at each day. I think the staff of housekeepers changes daily at most hotels. I usually run into the housekeeper a few times during our stay and they do seem to appreciate the thought.

Patsal-
Do we have to put the trash in one bag or they wont take it? & I know that at other hotels the towel in the tub is the sign to take them-- is it the same here? Also-- on the full cleaning day we have to have things ready for them-- or is it like regular houskeeping where they fully clean the whole room? I understand having to keep the room clean the other days(actually I am kind of relieved to not have it everyday because housekeeping moves my stuff & then I cant find it :D ) , but on the days with the full housekeeping do we have to do all that? Thanks a bunch!

Just returned from WDW. In the literature given to us at checkin, the section on Tipping states:

"Our guests frequently ask us what the custom is for tipping. At Walt Disney World Resort, it is customary to tip the following positions for exceptional service: bartender, bell services, cocktail server, food and beverage server and valet parker".

I stopped tipping mousekeeping a couple of visits ago and have noticed no difference in the cleanliness of my room. :p

I believe the original poster only asked if they should put there tip out daily or at the end of their stay or maybe give it to the front desk. And then they asked how much is the average. I didn't see the question "Do I need to tip housekeeping?"

Why does every tipping question have to turn into a debate?

Those of you who are insistant about NOT tipping, don't. But the original poster wasn't asking whether to tip or not.

Because of a nasty thead awhile back about tipping (those who don't tip were the nastiest, calling those who tip ignorant or show offs), I emailed WDW and asked about what I should do.

They replied saying that at WDW it is NOT a requirement to tip ANY position at WDW but if you would like to tip housekeeping, it will be graciously accepted and then they said I could leave it in a well marked envelope. No mention of housekeeping NOT being a tipped position and no mention of which positions were. I took this reply as a yes, I should tip them.

Anyway, back to the original poster's questions:

I tip daily, in a nicely designed "Mousekeeping" envelope that I got from a nice poster here. I genereally tip $1 a person a day. So my family of 4 left $4 a day. We usually left it on the mirror in the bathroom and sometimes on the pillow. When we stayed at the GF, we also tried to tip the turn down service maid and left that on the bed/pillow as well. I believe I tipped them $2. a night.

Have a magical vacation, although you're probably already gone and not reading all these replies!!! :teeth:

I mention it just in case the person does not realize that they do not have to tip. Sometimes posts (on this site and others) make it seem like tiping is required.

I understand maybe one or two people mentioning it "just in case" the original poster didn't know this but there were 5 replies making sure everyone knew their opinion about not tipping housekeeping.

I just thought it was a bit too much considering she didn't ask "if" she should tip but "how and when" she should tip....

What can I say, some topics just are hot buttons. And will turn undoubtedly turn into a debate
