Housekeeping tips

What would be the normal amount to leave a tip for your housekeeping service in POR per day....

I usually leave $2-3 per day if there are two of us. Also be sure to put it somewhere where it is apparent that the money is a tip for them. I usually put it under the card that says who is cleaning our room and it is clear that it is a tip.

We usually leave $1.00 per day per person. If mousekeeping goes out of their way and does something extra or we request something we would leave more. I like to tip each day so the person taking care of your room that day actually gets the tip.

I usually leave $5/day for the three of us. Before I leave, I put the money in envelopes, one for each night, and leave one the bed each day before we head out. I write a note on the envelope stating that it is for housekeeping. I know there are sites out there that have designs you can print on the envelopes, specific for WDW housekeeping.

I also got a book on towel animals for Xmas a few years ago - I leave a towel animal and the envelope. And I always get a towel animal when I get back. We make a game out of it.

I have never tipped housekeeping no matter where I've stayed (except what's required on a cruise.) Is this something that a lot of people do?

We always tip $1.00 per person per day plus $1.00.

As with any place we vacation..$5.00 per day...for the two of us. I consider ourselves fortunate to be able to vacation these days so why not spread a little around to those that work hard? :laundy::goodvibes:cool2:

I always tip Housekeeping, where ever I stay, both doemstically and internationally.
It is even considered a reimburseable business expense, so yes it is an accepted behavior

IMHO if I'm going to spend a great deal of money getting down to WDW and staying there for an average of 10 days, what's an extra $5.00 per day to help out someone who's probably making not much more than minimum wage? Just a thought. The way I view it, an extra $50.00 for 10 days, is not much when you consider the around $8000.00CDN it's going to cost us when we head down to WDW in Aug/2011.

It has become rather common. And there are strong opinions on all sides.

But just a point of information, housekeeping positions are paid differently that waitstaff positions.

Florida's minimum wage is $7.21 per hour. So housekeeping is being paid at least that much.

Florida's minimum wage for "tipped positions" is $4.19 per hour.

Since many states allow businesses to pay "tipped positions" a lower minimum wage like Florida does, most people know that they are expeted to tip waitstaff, etc. Otherwise, those employees won't even make minimum wage.

Since housekeeping makes at least minimum wage, some people choose not to tip them.

In our case, we tip housekeeping because they're doing rather personal things for us (handling our dirty towels, cleaning our bathroom, etc) and we figure they deserve a "thank you" for that so that I don't have to deal with those things while I'm enjoying a vacation.

Official Disclaimer: I've tried very hard to stay out of the fray surrounding whether minimum wage is an acceptable wage.

My DH & I usually leave $5 per day. We don't leave the room a huge mess or anything, usually just towels on the bathroom floor and and unmade bed, but it's always nice to come back and have it all straightened up and clean.

Yes, I know that is their job to clean the room, but if you had to clean up some of the nasty crud that they have to clean up with some people who are just plain disgusting (think dirty diapers, used condoms, spotty toilet seats)...you'd think twice about not leaving a tip (but this is just my opinion.

I leave about $5 a day...or sometimes just a 20 tip at the end of the vacation....but the mousekkepers change so it is better to do the 5 a day
