Housekeeping tips

Just got back last night from POFQ and left our mousekeeper $3 per day. I put the money under the little card with her name on it so that she'd know it was for her. We're not messy people but I felt that she was doing a wonderful job keeping everything tidy for us and replacing towels, shampoo and soap, etc. Her name was Norma and she made a swan towel animal for DH on his birthday as well as a pretty fan arrangement in a glass for our toothbrushes, I doubt it had anything to do with our leaving or not leaving a tip. She even stopped by for a minute to tell us goodbye yesterday morning, DH was charmed by her lilting accent.

I will leave $5 a day to cover the 4 of us.

I have never tipped housekeeping no matter where I've stayed (except what's required on a cruise.) Is this something that a lot of people do?

When I was in my twenties, I worked briefly as a maid in South Lake Tahoe. That gave me great respect for housekeeping services! I always tip per day, two or three bucks depending on the service. It's just the two of us and we're fairly neat. I'd tip more if we were a crowd.

The thing to remember is that those extra dollars are pocket change but really a big deal for someone working on low wages. Plus the maids are usually given a set number of rooms to clean in a certain time period. Which is why I tip more if there's a mess. They don't get extra time, they just have to work harder and faster!

That's my two cents. It's okay to not tip. But it's better to leave something and brighten someone's day!
