63 degrees during the winter

72 during the summer

Does anyone know why at 72 degrees in the summer, it's warm enough for shorts. But 72 degrees in the winter is cold enough to wear a sweater. Just one of those things that make me go hmm..

I've wondered this, too. The humidity level might have something to do with but even in the winter, it seems the colder it gets outside the higher I have to turn up the thermostat in order to feel comfortable.

I like to keep the house around 72 - 74 in the winter and then at night I turn it down to 68 - 70. In the summer I keep it between 75 - 80 during the day and down to 70 at night. As cold-natured as I am I can't sleep if I'm too warm.

When I was growing up, my mother hated artificial air so she never used air conditioner and always had the heat as low as it would go. It was horrible so that was one of the conditions when DH and I got married - I don't care how high the utility bill is, the house will be warm in the winter and cool in summer!

The downstairs is always at 65 unless the kids have friends over and they will turn it up to 68. Upstairs, I put it at 67 during the day and it stays there until DH comes home and pushes it up to 70. The rest of the night we take turns moving the thermostat up and down- I move it down to 68 and he pushes it up to 70 or 72. In the summer he moves the A/C thermostat down to 68 and I turn it up to 72.

Oh my gosh...my feet would fall off in some of your houses! Ours cannot go below 72 both up and downstairs. Apparently my blood doesn't like to flow through my feet so they become like ICE. And since I am home all day, the heat stays up. At night we drop it down to 67 but I have literally 3 layers of socks and piles of balnkets...not to mention DH to keep me warm.

we keep the downstairs one at around 64 during the day, once in a blue moon I'll kick it up a couple of degrees, but rarely. at 7pm that one goes down to 60...it takes a while to get colder, by the time we go to bed its definitely cooler in the house. the upstairs I keep at 58. now that the twins are able to have warm covers and such, its nice to be able to keep things cooler. last winter they were younger and we kept the heat on upstairs and downstairs...ouch, those bills were tough.

in the summer, we do use the air conditioner. I'd say we keep the house around 73 when we use it...can't remember off hand.

We have no kind of heater / AC unit at all in our house. So our temp is determined by the outside temp. Living in Mexico you wouldn't think that would be a problem, but because Mexico City is so high (about 7500 feet above sea level) it can get pretty stinking cold during the winter. It has been as cold as the low 40's inside the house for up to a week at a time. We do use small portable heaters, but that just means that some rooms are a little warmer than others.
During the warmer months it can get quite stuffy, but usually a good fan keeps things rather pleasant.
Growing up in Mass. I am used to the cold, but not INSIDE the house.

Don't be so quick to blame yourself. I seriously think a lot of it has to do with how well insulated your house is.

I used to live in a very well built, all brick townhome. I could keep my heat about about 70-72 and I was VERY comfy. In my current home (which is all siding and crummy windows), I've got the thermostat reading 73-74 degrees and I'm dying. My kids are also freezing. My nieghbor has the same home as I do and SHE is freezing. I know my thermostat says 73 but I can assure you that it FEELS much colder than that.

70 when we are home, 68 when we are out. But, this means the second floor is 4 to 5 degrees cooler in the winter.

I am apparently a thin-skinned southerner. My heater died last night and I woke up to 65 degrees on the thermostat's thermometer. I question the accuracy of that reading, however, as it was in the mid-20's outside last night. If it was, in fact, 65 degrees, then I need to learn to deal with it like all you northern folk. I usually set the thermostat at 69 in the winter. 76 in the summer.

I wish it were my house...although I am not saying my house is any top of the line house!! My feet just don't get good circulation...even in the summertime. DH and my oldest son are very warm natured and sweat in our house.

I just can't get it right...when it's 89 degrees outside I'm still chilled but when it hits 90 I'm sweating to death...go firure!
