My DH and I are in the process of buying a house, the house inspection is this Sunday. In the process of the inspection (expected to take about 3 hours) is it considered rude to take pictures? We're planning on using the pictures to help us remember room layouts and stuff so we can plan the arrangement of furniture. We don't get to move in till august and already we're going how exactly was that or where was the closet inrelation to the door, etc.

The reason i'm asking is because the current home owners will likely not be there for the inspection (otherwise i could just ask them).

No go right ahead

Many people even take video camera

By all means -- the home inspector might even encourage it. :)

IIRC, you're in the Cleveland area -- where did you end up buying? :)

I would ask the realtor. Just as a courtesy for the current owner.

Shouldn't be a problem...I think know lots of people do it while looking at houses! I took pictures and drew a layout that I labeled with the measurements when we went back after our contract was accepted (we couldn't attend the inspection).

If it hadn't been for the pictures my realtors took during the inspection, I would not have had any idea what my house looked like before I moved in. We bought it basically sight unseen, throught the mail. I don't see why there would be a problem taking pictures, after all, you are paying for the inspection, and it is good to have a photo record of what the insector finds also. He/she may take photos as part of the report. WHen we sold our home (same one we bought by mail) the inspector took pictures of everything he had an issue with, after we fixed what we agreed to, the buyers could compare the before and after during the final walk through.

If I may add my 2 cents here...

Just make sure all of the windows, doors and closets open and close.

We had some issues with broken windows ( ones that don't stay open - like a spring is broken) and things like that b/c we never thought to look at them. In addition, in the bathtubs, the "thingy" that opens/closes the shower to the bath was broken and one shower you couldn't make it a "bath" and the other one was stuck in shower position. Little things add up so turn on all the faucets, dishwasher, etc.

Also, make sure nothing is on a counter hiding any holes. A friend of mind bought a house that had a large pot of some kind on the counter. It turned out that put was covering a huge gaping hole in the wall and countertop which wasn't found in the inspection - so just move everything and make sure everything works. Best of luck to you.
