We are having difficulty deciding on hotel Locations in New Jersey for a couple of nights stay before our cruise out of NYC.

Garden Inn, Ridgefield Park
Holiday inn express, Paramus
Hyatt, Fair Lawn
Day inn, north bergen...They offer a shuttle into manhattan

Any suggestions???

I can't speak about the other hotels but I can tell you a little about Paramus and route 17 which is a major route. There is a lot of traffic in the area BUT if you need to get shopping done, that is the place to be (except Sunday). There are two malls on 17 and another on Route 4. There are also plenty of stores and restuarants along both routes. If you need something, you will probably find it. If you are driving into NYC, you have the option of taking Route 4 to the George Washington or Route 17 to Route 3 East to the Lincoln.

But I do have to tell you the shuttle to NYC from North Bergen is tempting.

have you thought about staying in the city? I am not sure if you have your car or not but there are deals to be had in city depending on when you are going on your cruise?

Days Inn, North Bergen -- NO!!! To say it is a less than desirable neighborhood is an understatement! I wouln't choose it if they were offering a limousine to the port.:scared1:

Of the four, I would pick the Hyatt in Fair Lawn.

My cousin's recently stayed at both the Holiday Inn Express in Paramus on Route 17 and at the Hyatt in Fair Lawn; they moved from HIE because they didn't like it.

I live in the immediate area so I would definitely go with the Hyatt in Fair Lawn. It is right where Route 4 becomes Route 208 North, but the exit is Saddle River Road in Fair Lawn. The great thing about that location is if you take that exit ramp and bear to the left, you will be on 208 South, which changes into Route 4 East. On the right side will be Westfield Shopping Mall, which we locals call Garden State Plaza. There's a Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Macy's, JC Penney and Lord & Taylor there in addition to so many other stores. Huge mall with a huge movie theater. Always packed, even in nice weather.

If you didn't feel comfortable taking that route, you could bear right at the exit and follow Saddle River Road to Century Road. Make a right on to Century Road and then a right on to Paramus Road. This will take you to the back entrance of Garden State Plaza (right past the Garden State Parkway South entrance, and it will be on the left at the traffic light).

If you want more local info, you can PM me. Everyone talks about the traffic on Routes 4 and 17; but it's not like that all day. From where I live, I can be at the George Washington Bridge in 10 minutes or less once rush hour is over.

we stayed at Homewood suites near Newark airport. They had free shuttle to port. That was 2 years ago. You can look them up to see if they still have shuttle.

oh... THAT Day's inn.... No way. That's right on 495. It's like CONSTANT traffic into the city.

Whenever I take the bus in, there's a group of folks waiting on the service road for the shuttle.

I'd stay in the EWR Airport hotels before I'd settle on the Day's inn.

OP previously posted he was driving from Canada. So driving to Newark would be out going too far south and out of his/her way. However there is a Homewood Suites - Hilton in Edgewater (City Place) NJ right on the Hudson River, immediately adjacent to shopping. You can leave your car there and take the ferry to the terminal or a cab. As you noted, it's possible the hotel has some type of shuttle transportation to NYC.

If you want to stay in NJ I would stay in Weehawken and just take the ferry over....it is almost right across from the NYC cruise terminal.

We recently stayed at the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor and it was great. Took the ferry over and walked to the port to see the Fantasy. Granted, we did not have luggage, but you could take a cab from the ferry terminal...it is only a few blocks. We stayed there the night before the Fantasy came into town.

Depending on what time you get there you can even take the ferry over that night and take a complimentary bus to Times Square or other parts of Manhattan (it is included in the Ferry ticket) for dinner to just walk around. Added bonus....The NYC skyline from the hotel can't be beat!!!

I would think the Paramus hotel would be too far for the day of the cruise. If you were going to stay that far you could stay in Fort Lee and just take GWB over and right down the Westside Highway to the port.

I lived in fair lawn for years. Hotel is great but not for NYC sightseeing. Find one in Hoboken or Newark so you can hop on the path in and out. The morning of the cruise you can't get there too early anyway so just take a cab from the path station on 34th. It is not that far. If you are planning on driving everywhere it is fine.

I don't think it is practical to use the PATH while traveling with luggage for an eight night cruise. The hotel in Hoboken (the W) is very expensive and for the same money you could probably stay in a deluxe hotel in Times Square or midtown Manhattan.

You can arrive at the NYCruise Terminal at 9:00 a.m.

As MJ has posted above, the NJ hotel closest to the terminal with the nicest amenities is the Sheraton Lincoln Harbor. However this hotel would cost at least a $100 more than the hotels the OP is currently considering. If it were me, I would choose the Sheraton, especially since the travel will be on a holiday weekend.

What made you pick the ones that you listed? I live in Northern NJ and Paramus and Fairlawn aren't that far ( about 30 to 40 minutes to the city) but there are so many towns that would be much more convenient. By the GW bridge you have Fort Lee, Cliffside Park, Edgewater to name a few. By the Lincoln Lincoln Tunnel a few towns are Jersey City, Hoboken, Wehawken, Secaucus... The port is not that far from the tunnel and depending on traffic could be about 5 minutes. We went over to the port when the Fantasy was docked there and it is very easy to get to. If I had to choose I would stay closer to the Lincoln Tunnel than the GW bridge but I feel it is closer to the port and I prefer the tunnel to the bridge.

Considering you will be driving down from Canada and would like a hotel close to main highways and moderately priced you might want to consider the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe (100 Frank W Burr Boulevard,Teaneck, New Jersey 07666, http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/ewrgp-teaneck-marriott-at-glenpointe) located at the crossroads of I-95 and I-80, three miles from the George Washington Bridge and 15 minutes from Manhattan. It's a very nice hotel, you can probably get a good deal on one of the internet sites.

Thanks for all the replies....I was just approved some extra vacation time for hours owed so we will now be heading to Atlantic city for 3 or 4 nights and then driving back to New York on Thursday and staying at YOTEL for 1 night. My DW and DDs are so exited. We've always wanted to go to the Jersey shores and since we are onyl about 2hrs away from NYC, why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone....:cool1:

AC is a bit more than 2 hours from NYC.....allow yourself at least 3.

How old are DD's? AC might be good for a night or so, but head over to Ocean City or Wildwood for a real taste of Jersey Shore

Hi!
I grew up in Northern NJ (the Garden State Plaza is STILL my all time favorite mall!). I think that the Fairlawn hotel would be fine if you have a car, as it is right on the main highway, just need to take travel time into consideration, probably about 20 minutes to the bridge (maybe less) and then another 20 to the port.
My personal recommendation is for the Crowne Plaza on route 4 in Englewood.

http://www.crowneplaza.com/hotels/gb/en/englewood/engnj/hoteldetail

It is on the way to the George Washington Bridge, after all the malls and about 5 minutes before the bridge. My parents live near there and whoever visits uses this hotel. It has an indoor pool, too, which is a great plus for kids (small pool, but fun!). There is a diner across the street in addition to the restaurant in the hotel. As I said, 5 minutes from the GW Bridge.

Good luck with your decision!
