Were going to the minnelapois/st.paul area. We will have a car but would like to be near some of the attractions. We are on a tight budget but dont want a total dive. Any advice?

Consider staying near the Mall of America (assuming that is one of the attractions you'll be visiting). There are a number of chain hotels in the area and although you're south of "the cities", you'll be fairly central for visiting attractions. (The MN Zoo, Childrens Museum, Science Museum, Como Zoo, Target Field, etc.) Another advantage is free parking. The downtown hotels generally charge extra for parking.

If you are interested in visiting downtown Minneapolis you can take the light rail from the MOA to downtown.

There's a great outdoor waterpark in Eagan, about 10 minutes from the MOA. It's less expensive and less busy then the Waterpark of America (indoor waterpark near the MOA).

Enjoy your stay!

does the lightrail cover a ton of attactions on its route or no? we have a pretty big list of places and would rather take the light rail than drive (i like being alive). Arnt the hotels by MOA more expensive?

No, there aren't a ton of attractions on the light rail route. We don't have much of a light rail.

Having not really needed hotels in the Twin Cities, I'm not sure where hotels are cheapest. I'd guess not downtown or too close to the MOA. If you find some stuff on the internet, we might be able to tell you dive or not dive (at least from the outside).

There is a Days Inn Bloomington that is walking distance from the MOA - and is $50 a night on expedia for the random dates I picked. Never been in it, but its respectable from the outside. The quick search on Expedia put most of the cheaper hotels WAY out in the far 'burbs. If you don't want to drive, that isn't what you want.

What do you consider cheap? The Hilton by MOA is usually around $80/night which I find ridiculously cheap. And it's super nice!

I stayed at an AmericInn in Apple Valley and they had a free shuttle to the zoo and to the mall. I was very excited to find the free shuttle to the zoo as we had come in on the train and didn't have a car.

Always lots of hotels on hotwire and Pricline. Go to Bidding for travel.com and you will see what hotels are available. MOA area is good . Very commercial but good for what you need. Many nice hotels. Bloomington East and Eagan are both areas that would work for you. Some nice deals. Enjoy your stay. You might want to go to a St.Paul Saints baseball game. Allot of fun and not very expensive.
