We just got tickets for Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. Now we need 3 hotel rooms. Any recommendations for hotels close to the civic center. I'm not paying the money that the Sheraton is asking. Any suggestions?

There are several hotels over near the Westchase Galleria that are nice...and I know that's not necessarily near the civic center, but it's a pretty nice area with lots of places to eat and other things to do.

We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard. Our room was pretty nice, and the hotel was not very expensive.

Well, we ended up going with the Tutwiler. I called a friend who used to live there, and she felt like it was fine. Walking distance, under a $100 a night, decent place to sleep - that's all we need for one night!

The Tutwiler is a very nice hotel. It is older but elegant as well. The walk from there to the CC isn't too bad. A few blocks if memory serves right. I went to college in B'ham and am originally from P'cola (parents still live there).

Do you mean Riverchase Galleria?

That is what I thought they meant which is really far from the BJCC

Yeh, and way too tempting to spend more money than I'm wanting to on this trip! :teeth:

I'm happy with getting the Tutwiler for a good price. I haven't been in a couple of years, so I couldn't remember exactly how close it was, but the website says 3 blocks. We used to go to B'ham often for conventions with DH's job, and we usually stayed in Homewood.

Sorry, but the Tutwiler is NOT a very nice hotel. It's old and elegant.

However, having taken up temporary residence in Birmingham for the past few months I have a few warnings.

1. Carpet is threadbare
2. Wallpaper in the bathrooms is peeling off the walls....
3. Most bathrooms have a window. If you don't want to be grossed out don't look closely at the window or window sill
4. My last stay I was first put in a room with no working fan in the heat/ac unit. I was then moved to one where the fan sounded like a jet engine.
5. Overall quality and upkeep are just plain poor.

I stayed there for several weeks since it was an EASY walk to my office, but finally paying that much for "shabby" got to me. I am now staying at the Marriott Courtyard by UAB. Clean and new!

So it is not too nice, Carol? :duck:

I would recommend you stay at the Embassy Suites in Homewood. It's driving distance (about five miles) from the civic center, but it's a nice place to stay. I work downtown and that is where all of our clients stay.

They are also in the process of building several hotels in the Lakeshore area, which is also in Homewood. They are a little further away, but would be cheaper than staying at Embassy Suites and closer than the Galleria.

If you are interested, PM me and I will try to get you some of the names of the hotels. If you do a search, I believe the hotels are located on State Farm Parkway.

I wouldn't stay anywhere near the BJCC. My recommendation is somewhere on Hwy 280 in the Inverness area. Great area, lots of restaurants and most of the hotels are no more than 10 yrs old... the majority built within the last 5 years.

Not sure where this is in relation to the convention center but DH and DD spent last night in a Country Inn and Suites which was very clean and reasonable with a continental breakfast that they both said was very nice.

Good luck!

LOL! The lobby looks really nice! Service is nice, it just needs SOME money invested.

We heard it was sold last week so maybe they will fix up the rooms now.

Well, let's hope they fix it up by the end of May because I reserved the rooms this morning already (non-refundable). So, basically, I'm sitting here right now with my hands over my ears not listening to you guys!! ;) Oh well, I figure it's one night out of my life. I'll survive!
