We are flying from Manchester Airport & just looking for suggestions of the different ways of getting there. We will be setting off the night before so proberly a hotel in the airport would be best, we were going to get the train as dh did'nt fancy the drive on the way home. We are travelling from Newcastle & have family in Leeds so we could stop off there, if dh drives & gets tired on the return, so would need a hotel with car parking. Any advise on trains, airport hotels & driving would be appreciated.

Hi,
We are from Middlesbrough and have travelled down to Manchester three times. The first 2 times we drove, with a half hour or so stop on the way. Stayed at the Etrop Grange with parking. Its really close to the airport and they do a complementary shuttle to and from the airport, as and when you need them. The first time was in a Jaguar and the second was in a mini bus. The hotel was lovely, i think it was a stately home at one point. Absolutely no problems at all with this hotel. The drive home was a bit of a long haul. The kids fell asleep in the back and were really ratty by the time we got home.
The last time we went by train. Caught the train at Middlesbrough station and it took us straight into Manchester airport. Got off the train and walked straight across the covered walkway to the Raddisson. Again, no problems as at with this hotel. We tried out the gym and the pool, had a meal in the restaurant and then wandered over to the airport to get some magazines from WH Smiths.
Caught the train back straight from the airport.
This by far in my opinion was the easiest way of getting to and from the airport and we will definately do it again next time we fly from Manchester.
Hope this helps a little

thanks for the info, thats just the sort of thing I was looking for. Did you get a special type of rail ticket with it being to the airport? what price did you pay?

Hi I'm from Newcastle  and travelled down to Manchester last summer for our flight to Mexico,. We got the train down from Newcastle to Manchester airport. We don't like driving after a long haul flight, so trains or planes are the only option for us!

The Newcastle to Manchester train is quite handy as it a direct service - and goes to the airport - the only problem is it takes ages - I think its 3.5 hours, but it is quite relaxing and if you book 3 months before you fly you can pick up some good rates.

We stayed at the Manchester aiport travelodge - only paid £19 so can't complain the room was modern and clean, a bit basic (no hairdryer etc) but excellent value for money. A taxi from the airport to the hotel is about £5 but you can walk if you wish.

Thanks Gemma, Do you get an open return? Prices i'm getting are £84 each, which is why i'm considering driving & stopping off at Leeds. Is the Travel lodge actually in the airport? Where abouts in Newcastle are you?

I'm from Newcastle as well and we drove down there for our flight in April, stayed at the Hilton and booked through airporthotels4u, cost around £90 for the hotel and 15 nights parking. Drive down is fine (should take just over 2 hours with light traffic), drive back is a bit more painful but we made it in one piece

We drive down either the day before or during the early hours. The train seemed quite expensive for the 4 of us. We stay at the Radisson which is an expensive hotel but a lovely one and so handy for the terminal.

We enjoy using the pool, sauna and steam rooms the night before and have a meal in the hotel, this is so relaxing and exciting knowing the next morning we are off on our holidays. We also try and get a runway view as it is nice to be able to watch the planes taking off.

We've been lucky enough to be driven down by family members in the past but last year we went on the train ( family and friends rail card plus open returns)it was about £72 last year. We pre-booked a room at Bewleys who were excellent and the room was lovely they have free shuttle from and to the airport just ring them from the station. we had a lovely relaxing night and did online check in from the lobby (free of charge) and our arrival at the airport the following morning saw smooth and efficient no long lines.

This year we've priced up fares again this time it will be £77.80 (again family and friends rail card and open returns)for thereabouts and we've pre-booked again with Bewleys an overnight stay with breakfast included to save looking for a decent meal at the airport before we fly. We can either do online check in before we leave home or do it from our hotel room as we're taking a netbook and ethernet cable this time.

Thanks everyone, We have just realised that our friends wedding in Leeds is the day after we land so we difinately will need to drive. Just have to decided whether to do hotel with parking or leave car at Leeds & get dad to drive us.
